Ecuador now has a coin to celebrate its participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Central Bank of Ecuador has presented the commemorative issue “FIFA World Cup 2026 – Ecuador’s Fifth Participation,” a collector’s item that commemorates the Ecuadorian national team’s fifth qualification for a World Cup finals and comes with a detail of particular interest to Spanish collectors: it was minted by the National Mint and Stamp Factory – Royal Mint of Spain.

This is no small detail. In an issue with strong symbolic significance for Ecuador, the technical and material work on the coin has been entrusted to the Spanish Mint, one of the most prestigious numismatic institutions in Europe. The coin is therefore born as an Ecuadorian coin in its message, its symbols, and its commemorative value, but with a Spanish manufacturing stamp.

The coin celebrates Ecuador's participation in the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. This will be the Ecuadorian national team's fifth World Cup appearance, following their participation in 2002, 2006, 2014, and 2022. The Central Bank of Ecuador presents it as an issue intended to preserve in metal a moment of national pride, linked to football, but also to the country's identity.

The design brings together several recognizable elements of Ecuador. On the reverse side appear the Cotopaxi volcano and the Andean condor, two symbols deeply associated with the landscape, natural power, and Ecuadorian identity. Alongside these are incorporated the colors of the national flag and visual references to the FIFA World Cup, creating a composition that seeks to unite territory, sport, and collective sentiment.

Cotopaxi is not just any decorative element. It is one of the most emblematic volcanoes in the Americas and one of the most powerful images of the Ecuadorian landscape. Its presence on the coin conveys height, permanence, and a sense of belonging. Opposite it, the Andean condor reinforces the idea of freedom, grandeur, and connection to the mountain range. Both motifs elevate the issue beyond a simple sporting commemoration: they transform it into a piece of national representation.

The obverse features the national coat of arms of Ecuador, accompanied by the silhouette of a soccer ball and the face value of 1 sucre. This value has clear symbolic significance, as the sucre was the country's former monetary unit before dollarization. On a collector's coin like this, its presence acts almost as a nod to Ecuador's monetary history.
The coin is made of 925 sterling silver (Ag 925), with a special proof finish, a diameter of 33 mm, a weight of 13.5 grams, and a reeded edge. The mintage is limited to 1,000 units approved by FIFA.

The choice of the Spanish Royal Mint (FNMT) to mint this coin adds a special appeal from a numismatic perspective. Spain is not only participating in the 2026 World Cup with its own official collector's issues, but is also leaving its technical mark on a foreign coin dedicated to the same event. For Spanish collectors, this detail gives the Ecuadorian coin a direct link to the Spanish Mint.

Furthermore, this is not the first time Ecuador has turned to Spanish numismatic tradition for World Cup commemorative coins. The Central Bank of Ecuador itself had already indicated in 2014 that its commemorative coins dedicated to the Brazil World Cup were minted at the Royal Mint of Spain. The 2026 coin thus extends a numismatic relationship that unites Ecuadorian sporting history with the technical expertise of the Spanish mint.

The “FIFA World Cup 2026 – Ecuador’s Fifth Participation” coin is the fourth World Cup issue from the Central Bank of Ecuador, following those dedicated to Germany 2006, Brazil 2014, and Qatar 2022. With it, the country once again uses numismatics as a means of preserving collective memory: a small silver piece to commemorate a sporting achievement that, in Ecuador, is experienced as a symbol of national unity.
