The Coin of the Year (COTY) awards are a prestigious recognition in the world of numismatics, organized annually since 1984 by the American magazine World Coin News. These awards recognize the design, artistic vision, and craftsmanship of coins issued in the previous year.

Nominations for the Coin of the Year (COTY) awards are selected through a detailed and rigorous process:

Initial Selection: Coins issued in the previous year are reviewed by a committee of numismatic experts. This committee is composed of editors from World Coin News , as well as other specialists in the field.
Evaluation Criteria: Coins are evaluated based on several criteria, including:Artistic Design: The quality and creativity of design.
Technical Innovation: New techniques or materials used in manufacturing.
Historical or Cultural Relevance: The importance of the subject depicted on the coin.
Popularity: Acceptance and popularity among collectors and the general public.

The design is composed of two main colours – green and purple – created not by painting, but by precisely refracting light. On the niobium core, we can see an index finger touching a smartphone, symbolising instant access to endless possibilities thanks to digitalisation. On the other hand, the silver border of the coin features objects that represent an analogue past, such as a handwritten letter, a rotary telephone and letters to be printed. These elements symbolise the technologies and means of communication that once dominated everyday life, before the emergence of the digital age. 

At the centre of the coin, the contrast is heightened by a series of digital symbols. The cloud, with the “@” signs and an industrial robot, shows how emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and cloud storage are shaping our present and future. The letters “AI” on a microchip at the centre of the coin underline the importance of artificial intelligence, a key area that is connecting all these technological advances.

A world on which we depend but of which we are barely aware, the Edaphon is as diverse as a rainforest and is both the basis of our existence and the key to the future of our planet.

A collective term encompassing all living organisms present in the soil, Edaphon is a significant chaos constructed by living creatures that gives rise to growth and gives rise to new life. The soil is full of ants, beetles and worms, but the human eye does not see the discreet army of microorganisms that hides inside. Of vital importance to us, they decompose withered plants and dead trees, creating fertile humus. Working together unconsciously, bacteria, fungi, plants and animals build an intricate structure, but it can break down quickly when grown.

In fact, although humans have been cultivating the soil for thousands of years, in modern times industrialization has had destructive consequences, with pollution, artificial fertilizers, monocultures and soil compaction, reducing or preventing soil productivity. . The obverse of the Edaphon coin shows the five factors that contribute to soil development: time, mineral material, climate, soil organisms (in the niobium core) and landscape relief (in the outer silver ring). In the center are the roots of a plant, whose leaves protrude from the silver ring.

Global Warming, is the theme of the 2023 edition of the Niobium Silver Coin, the Austrian Mint's best-selling Niobium coin, providing a timely reminder that we need to act before it is too late.

The human-caused rise in temperature since 1850 has already passed the 1°C mark. It is not a new fact. As early as 2015, the Paris Agreement set a long-term goal of limiting temperature rises to 1.5°C, which was reaffirmed at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference. But current measures to reducing greenhouse gas emissions do not go far enough to achieve that goal. It is now feared that a temperature rise of more than 3°C could occur by 2100, with catastrophic consequences for both humans and the natural world.


If, by 2030, global CO2 emissions could be reduced by 45%, we would be well on our way to avoiding that increase. But time is running out and we are already beginning to see the disastrous effects of global warming. Extreme weather events, melting glaciers, and changing weather patterns are becoming more frequent. The reduction of energy consumption and the sustainable use of natural resources are important steps to combat these phenomena. Every ton of greenhouse gases we don't produce could help avert catastrophe.

Within the blue and gold niobium core on the coin's obverse, a thermometer forms part of a clock symbolizing that time is running out. To your left, a globe indicates +1.5 °C.

In the center of the coin's reverse there is also a globe, which addresses the economic, ecological and social aspects of sustainability. Artificial Intelligence, is the reason that the Niobium coin issued by the Austrian Mint in 2019 is dedicated to, and that it looks towards a future that has already begun. Human beings have been using artificial intelligence, in the form of computer systems capable of performing tasks that normally require human intelligence to think for us for several decades. The computers, highly functional and always available, help us to carry out our daily work in a reliable way without our noticing.

The enigmas that adults find incomprehensible are a children's game for computers. The creative genius that has long distinguished humans from our physical superiors, animals, is in danger of being overcome. However, ironically, we are still superior to robots in terms of our "animal" skills, which include our perception and motor skills. Will this "super intelligence" imprison us or free us? Only time will tell if artificial intelligence will take us to the promised land.

 

The obverse of the coin shows the head of a humanoid robot in its electric blue niobium core and a processor from which the driver's paths extend to the silver outer ring.

The reverse side of the coin symbolically describes developments related to artificial intelligence: the electronic health system, intelligent machines, processors, digitization, data analysis and artificial neural networks. The neuronal synapses extend from the outer ring to the nucleus of niobium, where they meet with a binary code. In the foreground, we see the outline of a head that symbolizes our ignorance about the future functioning of the humanoid super intelligence.
