In 2026, the Bank of Lithuania (Latvijas Banka) will launch an ambitious numismatic program that will combine five collector coins, a commemorative €2 coin, and a euro set with its circulation coins. These issues will reflect some of Latvia's most representative cultural, natural, and artistic symbols, reinforcing the role of currency as a vehicle for memory and identity.

The release dates will be announced shortly before each piece is made available to the public.

The wedding crown: a symbol of passage and tradition

One of the coins will be dedicated to the bridal crown, an essential element of traditional Latvian dress. In popular culture, the crown—often crafted from metal, flowers, or plant elements—is not just an ornament, but a powerful symbol of transition.

The Brigadere stories combine fantasy and moral values, extolling perseverance, kindness, and love of country. Commemorative 2 euro coin: the Christmas market tradition

A commemorative €2 coin will also be issued in 2026, dedicated to the Christmas market tradition in Latvia. These markets, especially popular in Riga, fill the historic squares with lights, local crafts, traditional sweets, and mulled wine.

The coin will be available as a coincard in BU quality and in rolls of 25 coins that will be released into circulation. In addition, a euroset of circulating coins, also in BU quality, will be launched with the same theme.

The Bank of Latvia issued a new silver collector coin on Wednesday, December 10, dedicated to Flow, the Oscar-winning animated film that became an international phenomenon. The coin features a unique design, the result of a collaboration between the film's director, Gints Zilbalodis, and animation artist Pēteris Tenisons.

This coin is intended as a tribute to Flow, a work that has placed Latvian animation at the forefront of the global scene. Zilbalodis has been developing this story for over a decade, from his short film Aqua (2012) to the global success of Flow (2024). The director acknowledges that, like the feline protagonist, he has experienced long periods of working alone, but has also learned to collaborate with teams from Latvia, France, and Belgium. This blend of introspection and cooperation has demonstrated that independent animation, even with limited resources, can achieve extraordinary quality.

A story about cooperation and personal growth

The characters in Flow embark on not only a physical journey, but also an inner one. The independent cat learns to face its fears; the friendly dog ​​discovers it can break free from pack instincts; the ceremonious secretary bird demonstrates its willingness to sacrifice; the curious lemur, enamored with shiny objects, opens itself to new friendships; and the calm capybara maintains its serenity even in the midst of a storm. Design

The obverse of the coin features the iconic dark gray cat, the emotional heart of the film. The reverse depicts five fellow travelers, each with their own distinct identity but united by the shared experience that defines the movie: a shared journey in a small boat as they flee relentless flooding.

This visual odyssey, which has captivated audiences worldwide, has already garnered more than 80 international awards.

The main character of the animated film Flow is a dark gray cat with large yellow eyes, depicted on the obverse of the coin. The English inscription "Flow" is arranged in a semicircle along the lower left edge of the coin, while the Latvian inscription "Straume" is located on the lower right.

Reverse

The characters from the animated film Flow are featured on the reverse of the coin: a dog, a cat, a capybara, a lemur, and a bird. The face value, “5 EURO,” and the year of issue, “2025,” are inscribed in a semicircle along the upper right edge of the design.

Between 2016 and 2018, Latvijas Banka issued a series of commemorative 2-euro coins dedicated to Latvia's major historical regions: Vidzeme, Latgale, Kurzeme, and Zemgale. Each of these coins represented the country's cultural, historical, and geographical richness, becoming a tangible tribute to Latvian identity.

In 2025, the collection will be expanded with the issue of a fifth coin, dedicated to Sēlija , thus completing the representation of the five historical regions of Latvia.

The original series: four pillars of Latvian identity

The first broadcasts highlighted the great historical regions that make up the cultural heart of the country:

Vidzeme : a mountainous region with a strong medieval influence and rich folklore tradition.

Latgale : famous for its linguistic and cultural diversity, with a strong influence from Russian tradition.

Kurzeme : coastal area of ​​great importance in the maritime and commercial history of Latvia.

Zemgale : recognized as the agricultural region par excellence, linked to rural prosperity.

With these coins, Latvia celebrated its regional diversity and historical heritage. Initially, the series seemed to have concluded with these four issues. However, the addition of Sēlija in 2025 reflects a more inclusive approach , which also recognizes the unofficial historical regions within the modern administrative division.

The historical region of Sēlija

Located in the southeast of the country, Sēlija is a historical region mentioned in documents dating back to the 13th century. It was not until 2021, with its inclusion in the Law on Historical Regions of Latvia , that it was formally recognized as an independent cultural and historical region.

In 2023, its flag and coat of arms were approved , designed by heraldic artist Edgars Sims in collaboration with local communities and organizations. The emblem features a silver stag on a red background , its head held high and its antlers majestic, a symbol that connects with the heraldic tradition of the Duchy of Kurzeme and Zemgale.

Sēlija is known for its rural landscapes, rolling hills, forests, and rivers, as well as for its folklore, music, and agricultural traditions. It has been a crossroads of cultural influences and played a key role in the country's medieval and early modern history. Today, it is considered an essential pillar of Latvian identity.

The 2025 commemorative coin

The 2-euro coin dedicated to Sēlija will be issued on Thursday, October 9, 2025, by Latvijas Banka. It will conclude the commemorative series initiated in 2016, marking a complete tribute to the country's five historic regions.

A total of 413,000 pieces will be minted:

400,000 circulation coins in rolls of 25 coins .

7,000 coins in BU quality on coincard .

6,000 coins in the BU euroset along with the rest of the 2025 circulation coins.

The graphic design of the national side is by Laimonis Šēnbergs, the author of all the coins in this series. The minting was carried out at the UAB Lietuvos monetų kalykla in Lithuania.

The Bank of Latvia has issued a collector's coin with a face value of five euros, which is dedicated to science and its important role in our lives, also paying tribute to the perseverance of scientists in searching for answers to questions about the future of humanity.

The coin symbolically represents the process of nuclear fusion and speaks to the greatest challenge of the modern world: the search for an inexhaustible source of energy to protect natural resources and achieve a balance between the whims of our time and the interests of future generations.

When developing the coin design, Germans Ermičs consulted scientists to find a visual solution that would represent the fundamental laws of physics that allow for the existence of an almost unlimited source of energy: the nuclei of light chemical elements. When smaller nuclei combine to form larger ones, a huge amount of energy is released in the form of heat, but to initiate and maintain this fusion reaction, temperatures of millions of degrees and the pressure required to hold matter together for a sufficient time are needed. In nature, such extreme conditions occur in stars.

It is the fusion of hydrogen nuclei that powers the Sun and thus indirectly powers all renewable energy sources on Earth. Nuclear fusion energy has two main advantages: virtually inexhaustible fuel resources and a neutral impact on the climate.

The main conditions for nuclear fusion are high temperature and high pressure. In stars, the conditions for nuclear fusion are ensured by a strong gravitational field, while in nuclear fusion reactors, hot plasma is held together by special magnetic fields. The arrangement of the lines on the coin evokes both the magnetic fields of large space objects and the stylised cross-section of a toroidal fusion reactor, the so-called tokamak. The coin's relief with an indentation in the centre also evokes the gravitational potential near a star or black hole.

The obverse of the coin depicts the main reaction for producing nuclear energy. The nuclear components are represented as silver voids (neutrons) and gold-plated beads (protons). The nuclei of two hydrogen isotopes (deuterium and tritium) fuse to form a helium nucleus and a free neutron. The opening in the centre of the coin represents the site of the reaction. The inscription of the face value “5 EURO” is located to the right of the composition.

On the other hand, the reverse of the coin features two groups of circular lines that meet at the central opening and are marked with degrees of grinding and gilding. They represent the physical fields required to maintain nuclear fusion both in nuclear fusion reactors on Earth and in stars in space. The inscription of the issuing country “LATVIJA” (LATVIA) is placed in a semicircle at the top left, and the year of issue “2024” is at the bottom right.

The edge of this coin also shows the inscriptions n, 2H, 3H, 4He, symbols for the free neutron and isotopes.

The United States Mint was the big winner, with its high-relief $100 gold American Liberty coin featuring the theme “Freedom Through Perseverance.”

Currency details

The US Mint issued this pure gold coin in 2023, the sixth in a series launched in 2015 under the name “American Liberty”. It was available for purchase from August 10 of last year.

The “American Liberty” collection celebrates modern interpretations of the concept of American liberty, exploring the theme beyond the classical tradition of allegorical portraits of “Liberty.”

Since its establishment more than 230 years ago, the United States Mint has issued a wide variety of coins featuring the concept of liberty personified by allegorical female figures. However, this piece offers a different interpretation: a bold representation of the perseverance of American freedom. 

 

The obverse of the coin depicts a Pinus longaeva, a species native to California, Nevada, and Utah. It is believed to be one of the oldest living organisms on Earth, as it can live up to 5,000 years. Long-lived pines grow in places where other plants cannot, and are often the first species to repopulate the land after natural disasters, such as a lava flow or glacial runoff. The coin features the following inscriptions: “LIBERTY”, “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the year of issue “2023”.

The coin was engraved by Joseph Menna and designed by Elana Hagler. 

 

The reverse design, meanwhile, features a young bald eagle standing on a rocky outcrop, moments before taking flight. On Thursday, July 4, the Bank of Latvia issues a new collector coin under the name “Children’s Joy”, dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the writer Vilis Plūdons. The coin depicts two children’s poems that are very popular and well-known in Latvia: “The Bunny’s Bathhouse” and “The Dwarves and the Old Man of the Forest”.

Vilis Plūdons’ children’s poetry is steeped in Latvian folklore. In his childhood, he loved both fairy tales and folk songs told to him by his grandmother, which he later wove into a captivating poetic language, capturing the exuberance of childhood and the splendor of Latvian nature.

Vilis Plūdons, born in Zemgale, spent his childhood and later summers in the vicinity of the beautiful Mēmele River and in the embrace of the surrounding forests. The fields of Zemgale, the neighbourhood of his home and the surrounding forests held a special place in his heart, inspiring many of his poems. Vilis Plūdons enjoyed writing immersed in nature, surrounded by trees and waters.

The coin’s graphic design was created by children’s book illustrator Anna Vaivare. She has incorporated the beloved poems “The Dwarves and the Old Man of the Forest” (1913) and “The Rabbit Bathhouse” (1915) into this tribute to the literary legacy of Vilis Plūdons. In her interpretation of the first poem, the artist has chosen to depict the frolic of the forest dwarves as they welcome the first snowfall. The second poem depicts bunnies bathing in the bathhouse – an activity much appreciated by Latvians in ancient times and today, known for its rejuvenating effects on body and spirit. Although both poems immerse us in the world of dwarves, bunnies and other forest creatures, we understand that the poet unfolds stories of children and their encounters with the wonderful world of nature and traditions, which play an important role in his literary work.

The obverse of the coin depicts a scene from the poem “The Bunny’s Bathhouse” by Vilis Plūdons: a bunny is washing its ears, another is shaking its paws with a sauna whisk, and the third is washing its eyes. In the foreground, a bucket features a swirl of water forming the number “5”, with the word “EURO” written on its side. The inscription “PICIĆU, PACIĆU” is arranged in a semicircle at the top right.

The reverse of the coin depicts a scene from the poem “The Dwarves and the Old Man of the Wood” by Vilis Plūdons: two dwarfs are having a snowball fight, one is rolling a snowball, while only the booted legs of another are visible, stuck in a snowdrift. The inscription “2024” is placed in a semicircle at the bottom right. The inscription “SNOWBALLS ARE DARTING, HAIR CURLS ARE DANCING” is arranged in a semicircle in two lines at the top.

This year the commemorative 2 euro coin issued by Latvia is dedicated to the "Himmeli", an artisan and typical Christmas decoration popular in northern Europe.

Thanks to our colleague Paul (Euromunter) we are going to learn about the design of this new currency and some more information regarding the issuance.

About the coin motif

Himmeli are an ancient Latvian Christmas decoration. Its traditional shape is that of an eight-sided polyhedron, which consists of 12 interconnected straws and symbolizes the year with its 12 months, which is why the himmeli is one of the oldest Christmas decorations, since it was used before the Christmas tree. Christmas.

The coin

 

The author of the coin design is the Latvian artist Ieva Krūmiņa. In the same figure, a stylized image of a Himmeli ornament appears as the central motif. At the bottom left appears the name of the issuing country “LATVIJA” (LATVIA), and at the bottom right the year of issue “2024”.

The edge of the coin, like all 2 euro circulation coins of the Republic of Latvia, will feature the inscription “DIEVS * SVĒTĪ * LATVIJU *” (God bless Latvia).

Data on its issuance

The volume of issue will be 413,000 coins, of which 400,000 will be in rolls of 25 pieces intended for circulation, and 13,000 in BU quality and special presentation, coincard type, intended for collectors. What we don't know yet is the expected release date.

Next Tuesday, April 16, the Bank of Latvia issues a new collector's coin under the name "Through the Ages", dedicated to the centenary of the Latvian Open Air Ethnographic Museum and its tireless efforts to transmit its national heritage to future generations.

The Latvian Open Air Ethnographic Museum is one of the oldest and largest museums of its kind in Europe, housing Latvia's oldest wooden architectural treasures. Since its creation in 1924, the museum has maintained its mission of preserving historical heritage for future generations through the ages. This heritage includes evidence detailing architectural features and domestic objects, shedding light on the construction techniques and traditional layout of peasant and fishermen's houses, spanning a chronology from the 17th century to the mid-20th century.

The homes of Latvian farmers and fishermen are displayed in the museum. It also houses craftsmen's workshops, forges, potters' and tar kilns, windmills, churches of various denominations, etc. Seasonal and other traditional festivals are celebrated in the museum, offering the opportunity to delve deeper into their meaning and purpose.

The graphic design of the coin was created by experienced artist Arvīds Priedīte, who has captured Latvian values ​​on the coin: virtue and love of work, which have remained intact over time.

The obverse of the coin shows a woman mixing dough in a bread trough with a mixing paddle. Above the image, a spinning wheel, with the inscription “LATVIJAS ETNOGRĀFISKAIS BRĪVDABAS MUZEJS” (Latvian Open-Air Ethnographic Museum). On both sides of the picture, historical tools and household objects: on the left: a fish basket, a board with spoons, a flour shovel, on the right: a spinning wheel, a bread shovel and a washboard.

In the center of the reverse of the coin is a man carving a watering hole with a pickaxe. Above, a horse collar; on the left, a hand drill; to the right, a scythe. The Bank of Latvia, in collaboration with the news portal Delfi, organizes the traditional public vote “Latvian currency of the year 2023”. The vote is the most important event in Latvian monetary art and is organized for the 20th time.

We are all invited to express our opinion on which of the collector coins minted in 2023 is the most attractive in terms of artistic solution and history. The Bank of Latvia invites the public to vote and offers the chance to win one of six coins (3 of each) issued in 2023. Anyone can vote for their favorite coin, whatever country they live in.

The candidates

Riga Museum of History and Navigation

The museum, founded in 1773, is one of the oldest public museums in Europe, and the oldest museum in the Baltics.

The shape of the coin has been made inspired by the fans in the museum's collection, which were a typical part of women's wardrobe at the time the museum was created and founded. The fan, in addition to its practicality, used to have a more important function: communicating a wide range of non-verbal messages in a public setting.

On the obverse of the coin a light source is depicted, from which the light rays diffused by the fan are collected, amplified and focused in one direction using a lens. The lens symbolizes the museum, a repository of knowledge that spreads light: it broadens horizons and encourages learning.

The cheerful and observant gaze of Dr. Nikolaus von Himsel (1729-1764), founding father of the Riga Museum of History and Navigation, is depicted on the reverse.

100 Years of Basketball in Latvia

The year 2023 was the centenary of basketball in Latvia, since the Latvian Basketball Federation was founded in 1923.

On the obverse of the coin we can see a basketball basket with a gold-plated ball on the edge of the hoop. While on the back there is a tactical diagram of a basketball game.

The Golden Horses

The coin is dedicated to the theme of the golden horse, widely represented in mythology and literary works.

 

On the obverse of the coin two horses appear with their right legs raised and crowns on their heads. The reverse shows a cart wheel.

Riga Fashion

This coin is dedicated to the history of Latvian fashion. 

 

The obverse of the coin features a seated woman with red lips and a dress with bright floral prints. On the reverse, the top of the coin features a fabric swatch and a stylized blue pattern for making clothing, while the bottom features a cut-to-size piece of fabric with a floral print.

Celebration of Song and Dance

The Latvian tradition of the Celebration of Song and Dance is inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, being a globally recognized cultural value. 

 

The obverse of the coin with a horizontal rectangular shape reflects the characteristic horizontality of a choir on the open-air stage. The shape of the coin is counter-pressed, creating a united, sculptural undulating movement, rhythm. It also presents five multicolor bands that symbolize the ranks of the choir singers, the multitude of voices and the polyphony characteristic of choral music. The selected colors match the shades of Latvian national costumes. The reverse of the coin is monochrome and the text refers to the 150th anniversary of this tradition.

Stardust

The coin is dedicated to the distinguished figure of Latvian culture Imants Ziedonis.

 

The obverse features an image of a person in motion with connecting lines of dots running through their body resembling a constellation. In the background of this image, a starry sky is depicted at the top of the coin, while a frosty terrain appears at the bottom.

The reverse shows a tree with branches full of buds and different living beings, including a person reading a book.
