The Coin of the Year (COTY) awards are a prestigious recognition in the world of numismatics, organized annually since 1984 by the American magazine World Coin News. These awards highlight the design, artistic vision and craftsmanship of the coins issued in the previous year.

Nominations for the Coin of the Year (COTY) awards are chosen through a detailed and rigorous process:

Initial Selection: Coins issued in the previous year are reviewed by a committee of numismatic experts. This committee is comprised of editors of World Coin News as well as other specialists in the field.
Grading Criteria: Coins are graded based on several criteria, including:Artistic Design: The quality and creativity of the design.
Technical Innovation: New techniques or materials used in manufacturing.
Historical or Cultural Relevance: The importance of the subject represented on the coin.
Popularity: Acceptance and popularity among collectors and the general public.
Nominations: After evaluation, the coins that best meet these criteria are selected. These coins are grouped into different categories, such as Best Gold Coin, Best Silver Coin, Most Artistic Coin, among others.

Voting: The nominated coins are then voted on by an international panel of judges, which includes numismatists, historians and other experts. This panel determines the winning coins in each category.

This process ensures that the awarded coins are not only of high quality, but also represent the best in terms of design, innovation and cultural relevance.

This August, the 10 winning coins were announced, one for each category, and the overall winner. All of these coins were minted in 2023.

CURRENCY OF THE YEAR 2024

Once the winners are known, by category, we will now know which has been the absolute winner and proclaimed COIN OF THE YEAR 2024. Let's get to know it in depth.

The United States Mint was the big winner, with its high-relief $100 gold American Liberty coin featuring the theme “Freedom Through Perseverance.”

Currency details

The US Mint issued this pure gold coin in 2023, the sixth in a series launched in 2015 under the name “American Liberty”. It was available for purchase from August 10 of last year.

The “American Liberty” collection celebrates modern interpretations of the concept of American liberty, exploring the theme beyond the classical tradition of allegorical portraits of “Liberty.”

Since its establishment more than 230 years ago, the United States Mint has issued a wide variety of coins featuring the concept of liberty personified by allegorical female figures. However, this piece offers a different interpretation: a bold representation of the perseverance of American freedom.

The obverse of the coin depicts a Pinus longaeva, a species native to California, Nevada, and Utah. It is believed to be one of the oldest living organisms on Earth, as it can live up to 5,000 years. Long-lived pines grow in places where other plants cannot, and are often the first species to repopulate the land after natural disasters, such as a lava flow or glacial runoff. The coin features the following inscriptions: “LIBERTY”, “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the year of issue “2023”.

The coin was engraved by Joseph Menna and designed by Elana Hagler.

The reverse design, meanwhile, features a young bald eagle standing on a rocky outcrop, moments before taking flight. It features the inscriptions of the issuing country “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the quantity and purity of the metal “1 OZ.” and “.9999 FINE GOLD,” the face value “$100,” and the Latin legend “E PLURIBUS UNUM” (OUT OF MANY, ONE).
