On May 28, the Bank of Greece issued a coin. This collector's coin, which commemorates the 200th anniversary of the destruction of Kasos, has a face value of 5 euros and a total of 3,000 pieces have been minted.
In 1824, Sultan Mahmud allied himself with Muhammad Ali of Egypt to suppress the Greek Revolution. Muhammad Ali's son, Ibrahim, assembled a large expeditionary force and fleet. After putting down the rebellion in Crete, the Egyptians turned against Kasos, a strategically located offshore island that had aided the Cretan revolt. The Greek government was unable to send its fleet due to lack of funds, leaving the island defenseless.
On the night of 28–29 May, the Egyptians simulated an attack on the northern coast of the island, while a small force managed to land unseen elsewhere. The Kasiotes fought heroically, but were inevitably defeated. A terrible massacre followed; the island was devastated, more than 2,000 people were killed and an equal number of women and children were enslaved. The destruction of Kasos was one of the most tragic events of the Greek Revolution. Together with the destruction of Psara that followed, it was a serious setback for the Greeks, who now also had to fight a new and powerful enemy.
The obverse of the coin shows an allegorical representation of the theme of the massacre: a ship at sea with a winged female figure, holding a wreath above the water surface. On the upper edge is the inscription: 200 ΧΡΟΝΙΑ ΑΠΟ ΤΗΝ ΚΑΤΑΣΤΡΟΦΗ ΤΗΣ ΚΑΣΟΥ (200 YEARS SINCE THE DESTRUCTION OF KASOS). On the left side, the denomination and name of the coin: 5/ΕΥΡΩ. On the right, the mint mark. Below are the anniversary years: 1842-2024. Author's mark on the right edge above the water surface. At the bottom, the coat of arms of the Hellenic Republic surrounded by the name of the country: ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΉ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΊΑ.
The reverse shows Saint Marina holding the devil's head (on the right), which she wants to crush with a hammer in her hand, a symbolic representation of the struggle between good and evil. On the right side, the inscription: Η ΑΓΙΑ / ΜΑΡΙΝΑ (SAINT MARINA).
