At the end of the 19th century, Finland's self-esteem and national image were largely built with the help of architecture. Herman Gesellius, Armas Lindgren and Eliel Saarinen were partly responsible for the changes in the direction of architecture. The studio founded by the young students managed to design several iconic works of Finnish architecture during its short existence.

Some of them have been immortalised in this new 20 euro silver collector's coin, which has just been issued in Finland and aims to highlight the history and unique qualities of Finnish architecture, focusing on these three renowned architects.

The obverse of the coin features the following buildings (National Museum, Hvitträsk, Tallberg House and the Finnish pavilion at the 1900 Paris World's Fair) alongside the names of the architects.

This same design will be used on the commemorative 2 euro coin that Finland will issue this year on a date yet to be determined.

The reverse of the coin shows a decorative hinge from the door of the Hvitträski outbuilding.

The design on both sides of the coin was created by artist Aimo Katajamäki.
