• Petru Mihail Nicolae Stînea, „The History of the Romanian Greek Catholic Church in the United States of America (1903–2026)”, o amplă cercetare dedicată istoriei Bisericii Române Greco-Catolice din Statele Unite ale Americii;

A coin designed to be passed from hand to hand, a 2-euro piece, a cosmic phenomenon that Albert Einstein never witnessed, and even a lipstick-shaped issue. The best coins in the world for 2025 already have names and prove that today there's no single way to surprise a collector.

The international Coin of the Year 2026 awards, often considered the "Oscars of numismatics," have recognized ten issues in as many categories. The selection includes precious metals, technical innovations, compelling historical narratives, and coins whose appearance seems to defy our very notion of what we expect to find in a legal tender coin.

Among them all, one has achieved something her country had been pursuing for over four decades: winning the competition's top prize for the first time. And she didn't need to adopt a strange shape or resort to a complicated technological effect to do so.

From about 600 candidates to a single winner

The process began with around 600 coins submitted from various countries. A committee narrowed that number down to 100 finalists, ten in each of the ten categories, and an international jury of over 100 specialists then selected the winners. A second vote was held among these ten coins to decide the Coin of the Year.

Although the awards are dated 2026, the coins being evaluated were issued in 2025. The ceremony was held on August 27, 2026 in Pittsburgh, coinciding with the American Numismatic Association's World's Fair of Money.

The coin that has given his country a historic victory

"Chinese Dragon"

The 10 yuan silver "Chinese Dragon" coin won two awards: best crown coin and Coin of the Year 2026. This is the first time China has won the overall prize, despite having accumulated numerous nominations and category wins since the competition's inception.

Minted by the Shenzhen Guobao Mint for the People's Bank of China, the coin features a dragon advancing through clouds. Wang Hu Ming's design is not a generic fantasy: it draws inspiration from a Tang Dynasty golden dragon and the famous Nine Dragon Wall of Beijing's Forbidden City.

The other side, designed by He Chun and Jiang Qian Qian, depicts a winding section of the Great Wall traversing a mountainous landscape. The visual relationship is particularly effective: from a distance, the structure takes on an almost organic movement, as if another dragon were traversing the peaks. The coin thus brings together two of China's most recognizable symbols without resorting to an elaborate composition.

Austria: the rituals of the Hallstatt culture

"Beliefs and rituals"

The award for the most historically significant coin went to the third and final installment of the Austrian series "The White Gold of Hallstatt." Its 20-euro silver coin explores the spiritual world of an Iron Age culture that thrived on salt mining and trade. One side features a bowl decorated with a bull and two skeletons, reminiscent of the large cemetery discovered by Johann Georg Ramsauer in 1846. The other depicts a fire ceremony, accompanied by a waterfowl, an animal that may have symbolized the divine due to its ability to travel on land, water, and air.

The 2 euro coins from Notre-Dame are among the best in the world

"Notre-Dame de Paris"

France won the award for best coin commemorating a contemporary event with its €2 coin celebrating the reopening of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. After the fire of April 15, 2019, and five years of reconstruction, the cathedral reopened to the public in December 2024. The coin, issued in 2025, features a frontal view of its western façade, with the large rose window emerging between the two towers, and incorporates the official Notre-Dame logo along the edge. Compared to other large and elaborately crafted contenders, the strength of this piece lies in condensing an instantly recognizable image and a globally followed event into the small, approximately €2 coin.

A new American freedom: a sunflower and a bee

"American Liberty"

The United States Mint departed from the usual female personifications of Liberty to offer a completely different interpretation. On the obverse of this one-ounce gold $100 coin, a sunflower and a bee represent the care and responsibility necessary to preserve liberty. The reverse depicts an eagle enveloped in a swirling, almost turbulent movement. The coin, designed by Christopher Polentz and struck in high relief with 99.99% pure gold, had a maximum mintage of 12,000 pieces.

The phenomenon that Einstein thought we would never see

"Einstein Ring"

The finest silver coin transforms into metal an effect produced when the gravity of a massive object bends the light from a galaxy behind it. If the alignment is nearly perfect, the distant image can appear multiplied in a ring shape. Einstein explained the principle, though he doubted it would ever be observed; the first such ring was identified in 1979. The Austrian 20-euro coin uses a curved, three-dimensional surface, a scientific formula, and a color application to depict both the path of the light and the visible result of the phenomenon.

The winning coin that can appear in the change

"Hungarian Academy of Sciences"

Not all the winning coins were created exclusively for collectors. Hungary won the award for best circulating coin with a commemorative 200-forint version, of which one million were minted. It's worth remembering that in 1825, Count István Széchenyi donated a year's income from his estates to support the creation of the Hungarian Society of Scholars, the precursor to the current Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Two hundred years later, that contribution is reflected in a coin that retains the characteristics of the ordinary 200-forint and is intended to be passed from hand to hand.

Silver and niobium to tell the story of the digital revolution

"Digitalization"

Austria won its third award with the €25 silver and niobium medal dedicated to digitalization. Its green and violet colors come not from paint, but from the controlled oxidation of niobium. One side depicts a finger operating a smartphone, surrounded by digital functions and their old analog equivalents. The other side features a stamp, books, and a rotary phone alongside a cloud, the @ symbol, an industrial robot, and a central microchip with the letters "KI," the German abbreviation for artificial intelligence. It's almost a history of technological transformation compressed into 34 millimeters.

El Dorado: Two Worlds Face to Face

"El Dorado"

The most artistic coin was the French 10 euro note from the series "The Sower: Myths and Riches." Joaquín Jiménez depicts a Spanish conquistador facing Atahualpa, the last Inca emperor, separated by a golden idol and the sacred lake to which, according to legend, a ruler covered in gold dust brought his offerings. Selective gilding reinforces the motif that fueled expeditions, ambitions, and tragedies for centuries. The reverse features a modern version of Louis-Oscar Roty's historic Sower.

A coin or a lipstick?

"90 years of Lancôme"

The award for most innovative coin went to an issue that breaks even with the traditional circular shape. Monnaie de Paris celebrated Lancôme's 90th anniversary by creating a 10-euro silver coin in the exact silhouette of its Rouge Absolu lipstick. The mock cap features a diamond pattern, and the body incorporates the brand's signature rose. On the reverse, a new rose designed by Joaquín Jiménez alternates shimmering petals with guilloché surfaces. It measures 55.50 by 23.46 millimeters and had a mintage of 5,000 pieces.

Ukraine and an order that became a symbol of resistance

"Let's hold the line!"

The National Bank of Ukraine issued this 5 hryvnia coin on February 24, 2025, marking three years since the start of the large-scale Russian invasion. On the obverse, several defenders join hands over a map whose lines resemble the Ukrainian trident. The reverse shows soldiers advancing, supported by aircraft and drones, while silhouettes of civilians represent the efforts of those holding the rear. The motto "Hold the line!" transforms a military order into a call for collective resistance. Minted in alpaca silver, it was chosen as the most inspiring coin in the competition.

The ten winning coins at a glance

After learning about the history and design of each piece, here is the complete list of categories and winners of the Coin of the Year 2026 awards.

Category Country prize coin

Coin of the Year and best crown-type coin China 10 yuan "Chinese Dragon"
Greater historical relevance Austria 20 euros «Beliefs and rituals»
Contemporary event France 2 euros «Notre-Dame de Paris»
Best gold coin USA 100 “American Liberty” dollars
Best silver coin Austria 20 euros "Einstein Ring"
Best circulating currency Hungary 200 forints «Hungarian Academy of Sciences»
Best bimetallic coin Austria 25 euros "Digitalization"
most artistic coin France 10 euros "El Dorado"
most innovative currency France 10 euros «90 years of Lancôme»
Most inspiring coin Ukraine 5 hryvnias "Let's hold the line!"

Six prizes for France and Austria, but the victory goes to China

Austria and France were the most represented countries, with three categories each. Their coins depict archaeology, astronomy, technology, architecture, legends, and contemporary design. However, the highest accolade went to China thanks to a seemingly more traditional piece, powerfully represented by two ancient images: the dragon and the Great Wall.

The selection also shows the extent to which modern numismatics has diversified. The same list includes a Hungarian coin ready for circulation, a French two-euro coin, an ounce of American gold, a surface that reproduces the curvature of space, and a piece that deliberately resembles a cosmetic object.

Therefore, there is no single formula for creating a great coin. Sometimes the difference lies in a groundbreaking technique; other times, in finding the perfect image to tell a story we all thought we knew.

O nouă monedă comemorativă americană - 18.08.2026

The United States Mint will put on sale on September 2, 2026, the new one-dollar coin dedicated to President Donald J. Trump, one of the most controversial issues of the commemorative program for the 250th anniversary of the United States.

Minted at the Philadelphia Mint, the coin will be available to collectors in rolls of 25 coins and bags of 100. Its release marks the arrival on the market of an exceptional issue, both because of the presence of a sitting president and because of the political and legal debate that has surrounded the project since its initial designs were unveiled.

The coin is part of the numismatic program developed by the United States to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 2026. To mark this anniversary, the United States Mint has introduced special designs in several denominations, including the dime, quarter, half dollar, and dollar.

Within that extensive program, the issue dedicated to Trump has become one of the most closely watched. Its uniqueness lies primarily in the fact that it features the portrait of a US president while he is still in office, something extremely unusual in the country's monetary tradition.

The most well-known precedent dates back to 1926, when then-President Calvin Coolidge appeared alongside George Washington on the half dollar commemorating the 150th anniversary of independence. One hundred years later, Trump appears alone and occupies the absolute center of the obverse, giving the new coin a very different character.

COIN
Obverse

The obverse features a frontal portrait of President Donald J. Trump, dressed in a suit and tie, looking directly at the viewer. His face occupies almost the entire center of the coin, becoming the dominant element of the composition.

The design was created by Joseph F. Menna based on an official White House photograph taken by Daniel Torok. The artist's initials, "JFM," appear to the right of the portrait.

The image is surrounded by the top inscription "LIBERTY", the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST", two stars and the commemorative dates "1776 ~ 2026", linking the year of the approval of the Declaration of Independence with that of its 250th anniversary.

Reverse

The reverse features the presidential seal of the United States , surmounted by an eagle with outstretched wings. The bird holds an olive branch and a bundle of arrows.

On the eagle's chest appears a shield incorporating the number "250" as a direct reference to the Semi-Fifteenth Anniversary. The bird holds in its beak a ribbon with the Latin motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" —"Out of many, one"—.

The design is completed with the inscriptions on the border: "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR". Next to the eagle's tail appear the initials "FG", corresponding to the original designer, Frank Gasparro.

The fourth and final 2026 U.S. one-dollar coin, and the thirty-third in the American Innovation Dollar Program series, will be issued on July 28. This new coin, dedicated to the state of Minnesota, commemorates the development of mobile refrigeration, an innovation that transformed the transportation of food, medicine, and other temperature-sensitive products.

What does the 2026 Minnesota coin represent?

The 2026 Minnesota coin is an official one-dollar issue from the United States Mint, part of the American Innovation Dollar Program. It is not intended for general circulation but will be distributed primarily in rolls and bags for collectors.

This time, the chosen innovation is not an easily recognizable everyday object or a famous person, but a technology that quietly changed the economy and daily life: the possibility of maintaining a controlled temperature during road transport.

Before the advent of the first mechanical refrigeration systems installed in vehicles, the transport of perishable foods relied primarily on ice and salt. This method was imprecise, took up a significant portion of cargo space, and considerably limited the distance that products such as meat, milk, fish, fruits, or vegetables could travel.

Mobile refrigeration made it possible to expand trade routes, reduce food losses, and deliver fresh products to locations far from their production centers. It also proved crucial for transporting medicines, vaccines, blood, and plasma safely.

Frederick McKinley Jones, the man behind the innovation

The story of this innovation is linked to Frederick McKinley Jones (1893-1961), a self-taught engineer and inventor who developed the first practical and reliable cooling system for vehicles in Minnesota.

Jones had worked as a mechanic, electrician, and sound equipment specialist before collaborating with businessman Joseph A. Numero. In the late 1930s, he began developing a refrigeration unit capable of withstanding the vibrations and harsh conditions of road travel.

In 1938, Numero founded the US Thermo Control Company in Minneapolis, which would later become Thermo King. Jones served as vice president of engineering and in 1939 filed a patent for one of his first refrigerated transport systems.

The major breakthrough came with the so-called Model C, developed in 1941. Unlike the earlier units mounted under the vehicle, this equipment was more compact and installed on the front of the trailer, an arrangement that would eventually become standard and can still be seen on refrigerated trucks today. The Minnesota Historical Society considers this model an innovation that revolutionized both agriculture and military transport.

During World War II, these systems enabled the transport of food, medicine, and blood plasma to hospitals and battlefronts. After the war, their commercial use grew rapidly, giving rise to the modern cold chain.

Frederick McKinley Jones received more than sixty patents during his lifetime, around forty of them related to refrigeration. In 1991, he posthumously became the first African American to be awarded the U.S. National Medal of Technology.

Coin design

The reverse side shows a typical 1940s truck equipped with one of the first refrigeration units installed on its front. The choice of this vehicle immediately identifies the moment when refrigerated transport began to acquire its modern form.

On the side of the truck appear several symbols alluding to the different temperature-sensitive products whose large-scale transport was made possible thanks to this innovation.

The design includes the following inscriptions:

“UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” —United States of America—.
"MINNESOTA".
“MOBILE REFRIGERATION” —Mobile Refrigeration—.

Although the coin does not feature the portrait or name of Frederick McKinley Jones, the truck and refrigeration unit depicted directly allude to the work developed by the inventor and the company founded in Minnesota.

The reverse was designed by Beth Zaiken, a member of the United States Mint's Artistic Infusion Program, and modeled by medal artist Joseph V. Noorigian.

A special obverse for the 250th anniversary of the United States

The obverse, common to all coins in the series, shows a profile representation of the Statue of Liberty, accompanied by the inscriptions “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “$1”.

The design also incorporates a private brand in the shape of a gear, a symbol of industry and innovation. In the 2026 issues, this element also includes the Liberty Bell and the number “250,” referring to the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence, proclaimed in 1776.

The incuse on the edge appears the year “2026”, the corresponding mint mark and the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” —Out of many, one—.

Things to keep in mind

The coin will go on sale on July 28 in rolls of 25 pieces and bags of 100 coins, from the Philadelphia and Denver mints.

The United States Mint has launched one of the most high-profile commemorative programs of 2026: an official series dedicated to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the major sporting event to be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. This is not simply a themed issue, but a collection designed to unite two worlds with enormous appeal: soccer, now a global phenomenon, and American commemorative numismatics.

The issue consists of three distinct coins: a five-dollar gold coin, a silver dollar, and a half-dollar in cupronickel. Each features a unique obverse design, while the reverse shares a common image that serves as a unifying theme for the entire collection: three hands raising the FIFA World Cup trophy against a background inspired by the stars and stripes of the American flag.

The series arrives at a particularly symbolic moment. The 2026 World Cup will be the first hosted by three countries and also the first with 48 participating teams, making it the largest edition ever held. For the United States, it also represents an opportunity to definitively solidify soccer in a country where the sport has grown spectacularly in recent decades.

Three coins, three ways to count the World Cup

The highest denomination coin is the $5 gold coin, minted at the West Point Mint. Its design is probably the most conceptual of the entire series: the globe is transformed into a soccer ball, with North America as the visual center and the three host countries as the main characters. The inscription “FOOTBALL UNITES THE WORLD” summarizes the central idea of the issue: soccer as a common language, capable of bringing together cultures, flags, and fans from every continent.

The silver dollar features a more dynamic image. Its obverse depicts a footballer in action, controlling the ball, with the FIFA Unity logo in the background. It's a composition that seeks to convey movement, technique, and energy—three elements associated with the spectacle of football and the international scope of the tournament.

The half dollar, meanwhile, features the most visually spectacular scene: a player executing a bicycle kick over the stacked "26" of the official World Cup emblem. It's the most straightforward coin and possibly the most recognizable to the general public because it uses an iconic football action, one of those plays that instantly encapsulates the beauty and difficulty of the sport.

A common reverse side with strong symbolic meaning

All three coins share the same reverse side. It depicts three hands holding aloft the FIFA World Cup trophy, set against a stylized background of stars and stripes. The image clearly connects the competition to the issuing country, while still maintaining the tournament's universal appeal. The hands do not belong to a single player or nation; they represent collective celebration, the unity of countries, and the shared aspiration to win the ultimate prize in world football.

The legends change according to the denomination of each piece: “FIVE DOLLARS”, “ONE DOLLAR” or “HALF DOLLAR”, accompanied by “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM”.

Qualities and presentations

The US Mint is offering all three coins in Proof and uncirculated condition, along with a Proof case containing all three pieces. This format allows the issue to appeal to a wide range of collectors: from those seeking a single coin at a more affordable price to those who prefer the complete collection in a special presentation.

Maximum authorized print runs

The maximum combined mintage is 100,000 coins for the gold piece, 500,000 for the silver dollar, and 750,000 for the half dollar. These figures include all available versions of each coin, that is, adding the Proof, uncirculated, and any sets in which they may appear.

The Proof case of three coins has a product limit of 10,000 units, which will predictably make it one of the most sought-after presentations by collectors who want to keep the complete series in a single issue.

A charity-surcharge issue

As is common with many commemorative programs in the United States, these coins include a surcharge earmarked for specific purposes. In this case, the authorized surcharges are $35 per gold coin, $10 per silver dollar, and $5 per half dollar. According to official information, these funds are destined for FWC2026 US, Inc., to support soccer programs and activities in the United States.

Characteristics of coins

Currency Metal Quality Weight Diameter Mint Maximum print run

$5 Gold 90%, silver 6% and the rest copper Proof and uncirculated 0.243 troy ounces of fine gold 21.60 mm West Point (W) 100,000

Half a dollar 8.33% nickel and the rest copper Proof and uncirculated 11,340 g 30.61 mm Philadelphia (P) 750,000

The currency and the moment

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be much more than a tournament. It will be a global test for soccer in North America and one of the biggest sporting events ever held. American numismatics wanted to commemorate this moment with a series that combines sports design, national symbolism, and international appeal.

For Spanish collectors, this issue holds added interest: it not only commemorates the World Cup that will define the 2026 sporting calendar, but also demonstrates how the United States uses its commemorative coin to participate in the narrative of a global event. Gold, silver, and cupronickel all serve a single idea: football as a spectacle, as an industry, and as a symbol of unity between nations.

For a full year, the United States will commemorate the 250th anniversary of its independence (1776–2026) with a renewed numismatic program that includes the temporary redesign of several circulating coins, reflecting the country's founding principles and honoring its history.
Joining the coins already released is the new half-dollar coin issued by the United States Mint on May 26, breaking with the traditional John F. Kennedy design, which has been changed for the first time in over 60 years.

This new issue, under the name "Enduring Liberty", features the Statue of Liberty, the central symbol of the design until 2027, the year in which the historic portrait of John F. Kennedy will return to the half dollar coin.

The classic Kennedy Half Dollar will return in 2027

The Kennedy Half Dollar is a fifty-cent coin issued by the United States since 1964, created to honor assassinated President John F. Kennedy.

This piece quickly became a symbol of national tribute and one of the most recognizable commemorative coins in modern American history.

ENDURING LIBERTY HALF DOLLAR

Obverse

The obverse of the coin features a contemporary and solemn reinterpretation of the Statue of Liberty, a universal symbol of freedom and the enduring nature of American ideals. The design showcases a striking close-up of the statue's face, sculpted with remarkable detail and realism, its unwavering gaze fixed on the future, evoking the continuity of the nation's spirit throughout the ages.

The composition is particularly striking for the expressive power of the portrait, accompanied by the rays of the crown that extend to the edge of the coin. Surrounding the design are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the dates "1776 ~ 2026," commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States' independence.

Reverse

The reverse depicts Liberty handing her burning torch to a new generation, symbolizing the transmission of the ideals of freedom, knowledge, and hope into the future. The flame reinforces the message of continuity and progress. Surrounding the scene is the famous quote by James Madison: "KNOWLEDGE IS THE ONLY GUARDIAN OF TRUE LIBERTY," along with the inscriptions "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "HALF DOLLAR."

The third U.S. one-dollar coin of 2026, and the thirty-second in the American Innovation Dollar Program series, will be issued on May 12. This new coin, dedicated to the state of California, pays tribute to Steve Jobs, one of the most influential figures in contemporary technology and a symbol of global innovation.

What is the Steve Jobs coin of 2026?

The 2026 Steve Jobs coin is an official one-dollar issue from the United States Mint as part of the American Innovation Dollar Program, dedicated to the state of California. It is not intended for general circulation but is produced exclusively for numismatic collectors.

Steve Jobs (1955–2011), co-founder of Apple Inc., was one of the driving forces behind the technological revolution of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Under his leadership, Apple introduced products that transformed the daily lives of millions of people, from the Macintosh in 1984 to iconic devices like the iPod, the iPhone in 2007, and the iPad in 2010. These advancements redefined entire industries—personal computing, digital music, mobile telephony, and entertainment—and solidified an approach where design and user experience are paramount.

The inscription “ Make Something Wonderful,” featured on the 2026 Steve Jobs coin, encapsulates his philosophy: creating accessible, intuitive technology that fosters creativity. His inclusion in this series, representing California—the birthplace of Silicon Valley—also carries special symbolic value, as he is the first technology entrepreneur honored on the program, reflecting the significant role digital innovation has played in recent history.

The coin depicts a young Steve Jobs seated contemplatively against a backdrop of rolling oak-covered hills, characteristic of Northern California. The scene conveys a serene and reflective image, where nature and inspiration combine to evoke the idea of technology conceived organically and intimately. The design features the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “CALIFORNIA,” along with Jobs' name and the phrase “MAKE SOMETHING WONDERFUL.”

The obverse, common to the entire series, depicts the Statue of Liberty in profile, accompanied by “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “$1”. Since 2019, it has incorporated a symbol alluding to innovation; in the 2026 issues, this detail is adapted to include a Liberty Bell with the number “250”, referring to the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States (1776–2026). Things to keep in mind

The United States Mint produces it exclusively for numismatic purposes, distributing it in various formats for collectors, which increases its appeal within the specialized market.
