The Republic of San Marino has added a new piece to its 2026 numismatic program with the issuance of a €5 silver coin dedicated to Giuseppe Verdi. The coin commemorates the 125th anniversary of the death of the celebrated Italian composer and is part of the "Great Composers of Music" series, a collection that in recent years has become one of the most recognizable in San Marino's numismatics.

Far from resorting to the classic portrait of the honoree, San Marino has opted for a much more evocative design. The coin doesn't depict Verdi, but rather one of the most iconic characters born from his work: Aida. In this way, the issue not only commemorates the composer, but also the artistic legacy that made him one of the most important figures in the history of music.

A silver coin inspired by the opera Aida

The choice of Aida is no accident. Premiered in Cairo in 1871, this opera is among Giuseppe Verdi's most famous compositions and continues to be performed regularly in major theaters around the world. Its blend of drama, love, power, and exoticism has made it one of the great masterpieces of opera.

Designer Daniela Longo has brought this world to life on the coin with a depiction of the Ethiopian princess Aida. The protagonist appears elegantly adorned with jewelry and decorative elements inspired by ancient Egypt. Behind her, the famous pyramids can be seen, an immediate reference to the setting of the story.

The lower part of the design incorporates a musical staff that recalls the true reason for the issue: the tribute to Giuseppe Verdi and the extraordinary influence that his music continues to exert more than a century after his death.

The result is a composition that is especially attractive to collectors, as it manages to unite music, history and art in a single piece without resorting to repetitive formulas.

San Marino 's 2026 numismatic program has been officially announced and confirms

the issuance of two commemorative 2 euro coins dedicated to prominent figures in European history and culture.

However, the designs for both coins have not been officially released until today. The images I'm showing you are the official designs.

The two coins commemorate the 450th anniversary of the death of Titian and the 800th anniversary of the death of Francis of Assisi, two anniversaries of great cultural and symbolic significance.

450th anniversary of the death of Titian Vecellio (1576–2026)

The first coin in the program is dedicated to Titian (1490–1576), one of the great masters of the Italian Renaissance and a key figure in the evolution of European painting. Born in Pieve di Cadore and active primarily in Venice, Titian revolutionized the art of his time through his innovative use of color and light, decisively influencing subsequent generations.

Throughout his career he worked for important patrons, such as Emperor Charles V and Pope Paul III, and left behind masterpieces like The Assumption of the Virgin and Sacred and Profane Love. He died in Venice in 1576 during a plague epidemic, after more than six decades of artistic activity.

According to images obtained exclusively by Numismática Visual, the coin features an allegorical interpretation of Wisdom (Sapienza), inspired by the famous fresco cycle that Titian painted for the ceiling of the Marciana Library in Venice. The female figure is seated on a cloud and holds a rolled-up scroll, a traditional attribute of knowledge and erudition.

The design does not literally reproduce the original fresco, but offers a numismatic reinterpretation of its iconography, evoking the humanist thought and intellectual ideal that characterize the late work of the Venetian master.

The design is completed by the legends "TIZIANO", "SAN MARINO" and the dates "1576 - 2026", along with the mint mark, while the outer ring features the twelve stars of the European Union.

800th anniversary of the death of Francis of Assisi (1226–2026)

The second coin included in the numismatic program is dedicated to Francis of Assisi (1182–1226), founder of the Franciscan order and one of the most influential spiritual figures in European history. The son of a wealthy merchant, he renounced all riches to embrace a life of poverty, humility, and service, preaching love, peace, and respect for nature.

Author of the Canticle of the Creatures and the first saint to receive the stigmata, he was canonized in 1228. His message of universal brotherhood remains fully relevant eight centuries after his death.

This image, obtained exclusively by Numismática Visual, depicts a scene of great symbolic weight: Saint Francis interacting with a wolf, a clear reference to the episode of the Wolf of Gubbio, one of the best-known stories in his hagiography. The saint appears extending his hand in a gesture of serenity and reconciliation, while the animal, depicted in a docile attitude, symbolizes the reconciliation between humankind and nature.

The composition is completed with floral and vegetal motifs, which reinforce the message of harmony with creation and allude to the Canticle of the Creatures. The careful treatment of the details lends the scene a distinctly narrative and contemplative character.

The coin's field features the legends "FRANCESCO D'ASSISI", "SAN MARINO" and the dates "1226 - 2026", along with the mint mark, with the twelve stars of the European Union on the outer ring.

This July, San Marino concludes the issuance of its coin collection, consisting of twelve 10-euro coins inspired by the signs of the Chinese lunar calendar. This series, which began in 2022, concludes with the issuance of the last three coins, dedicated to the signs of the Rooster, the Dog, and the Pig.

As we know, the coins were minted by the Austrian Mint (Münze Österreich). The series' designs are the work of designer Orietta Rossi, and they are minted in cupronickel, weighing 10.10 grams and with a diameter of 27.90 millimeters.

The announced issue volume for each of these three new coins is 20,000 units, the same mintage as the previous releases in the collection.

One of the distinctive features of this series is the incorporation of a small red appliqué on the reverse of each coin, a symbolic nod to Chinese culture, where the color is traditionally associated with luck and prosperity. In addition, each piece includes an inscription corresponding to the Chinese zodiac sign, represented in Chinese characters.

Rooster

 (1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005, 2017, 2029)

In the Chinese zodiac tradition, the Rooster is the tenth of the twelve signs that make up the lunar cycle. This sign is linked to the metallic element (in its fixed form) and represents the energy of order, vigilance, and trust.

The Rooster symbolizes punctuality, precision, and a sense of responsibility. People born under this sign tend to stand out for their honesty, determination, and critical thinking. They are perfectionists by nature, with great attention to detail and a strong penchant for a job well done. They can also be direct in their communication and value transparency both personally and professionally.

In Chinese culture, the Rooster is also a symbol of protection and heraldry, for its role in heralding the dawn and warding off evil spirits. Its active and proud nature makes it a central figure in the symbolism of the Eastern zodiac.

Dog

The Dog occupies the eleventh position in the Chinese horoscope cycle. It is associated with the Earth element in its fixed form and is considered a symbol of loyalty, justice, and protection.

This sign stands out for its strong sense of duty, moral integrity, and spirit of service. People born under the sign of the Dog tend to be trustworthy, honest, and generous, although they can also be reserved or cautious with those they don't know well. In the social sphere, they tend to champion causes they consider just and do not hesitate to support their loved ones.

In Chinese mythology, the Dog is considered a guardian symbol par excellence, associated with fidelity and courage. Its presence in the zodiac represents commitment and solidarity, qualities highly valued in traditional Chinese culture.

Although they may appear carefree, they are tenacious and responsible when committed to a cause or task. Their positive approach and love for life's simple pleasures make them highly valued companions in their family and social circles.

In Chinese tradition, the Pig also represents prosperity and good fortune. It is considered an auspicious sign, linked to material well-being and emotional satisfaction.

The obverse, common to all coins in the series, features the three stylized towers, crowned by their respective plumes, distinctive elements of the San Marino coat of arms. On either side of the central scene are two branches: on the left, a laurel branch, a symbol of victory and honor; on the right, an oak branch, representing strength and stability. In the lower center, a sun can be seen emerging from the clouds.

On July 3, 2025 , the Republic of San Marino will issue a new commemorative 2 euro coin dedicated to the 550th anniversary of the birth of Michelangelo Buonarroti , one of the greatest geniuses of the Italian Renaissance. The coin will feature an exclusive design on its obverse, the work of Silvia Petrassi , depicting a portrait of Cleopatra , inspired by an original drawing by Michelangelo kept at the Fondazione Casa Buonarroti in Florence.

However, the news of this issue has been accompanied by a controversy that has caused discomfort among collectors and regular subscribers of the Ufficio Filatelico e Numismatico di San Marino . The reason: a special "Proof Inversa" version of this coin, limited to just 4,000 pieces , has been sold exclusively to numismatic dealers , deliberately excluding loyal subscribers who have supported the microstate's official issues for years.

A fragmented and elitist broadcast

The commemorative coin will be issued in three different qualities:

BU (Brilliant Uncirculated) quality: 52,000 units, presented in the traditional thematic portfolio, with an issue price of 18 euros.


Proof Quality : 3,000 units, included in the 2025 Euroset, with the usual high-quality finish. (Issue date to be determined)


Reverse Proof Quality: 4,000 units, with an issue price of 27 euros, reserved exclusively for numismatic dealers.

The Reverse Proof technique is characterized by reversing traditional finishes: areas that are normally shiny become matte, and vice versa. While this technique offers aesthetic innovation, it does not represent real additional numismatic value ; rather, it represents a new format designed to generate exclusive products and increase speculation.

Pre-issue speculation

What's most striking is that even before its official release , this Reverse Proof version is already being offered on the secondary market at prices ranging from 150 to 200 euros , more than seven times its issue price. This rapid speculation is a direct consequence of the selective distribution system adopted by San Marino, which has left traditional subscribers—true aficionados and collectors— unable to acquire it at the official price .

This fact has been interpreted as a clear gesture of contempt towards subscribers , who have been relegated to acquiring only the "normal" (BU) version, while merchants have access to the most limited and coveted piece, inevitably destined to inflate its value on the parallel market.

A policy that erodes trust

The strategy adopted by the San Marino Philatelic and Numismatic Office appears to prioritize short-term profit over maintaining a relationship of trust with its collector base. The decision not to offer its subscribers the opportunity to purchase at least one Proof Inversa edition calls into question the organization's commitment to transparency and fairness.

At a time when philately and numismatics are struggling to maintain the interest of new generations, actions like this only contribute to discouraging the loyalty of collectors, and fueling the perception that these special issues are intended more as business instruments than as cultural tributes.

In 2025, it will be 150 years since Georges Bizet's death, and San Marino has joined the commemoration with a remarkable piece of coins. The new 5-euro coin issued by the world's oldest republic is part of the "Great Music Composers" series and is dedicated to the celebrated French composer, whose name has been eternally linked to a work: Carmen.

Despite being French and having never set foot in Spain, Bizet managed to capture something profoundly Spanish in Carmen . The coin's design makes this clear from the first glance: a flamenco dancer raising a fan, a charging bull, and a bullfighter in the act. These are images that could be mistaken for an Andalusian folklore print, but here they become a symbol of a deeper connection: that of music as a bridge between cultures.

Carmen , premiered in 1875, not only revolutionized opera with its emotional rawness and unvarnished portrayal of a free, defiant, and tragic woman. It also introduced to the European stage an artistic vision of Spain that, though born of the French imagination, resonated powerfully with its vitality, rhythm, and character. On January 23, San Marino will issue its first coin of 2025, a one-ounce pure silver coin that is part of the series dedicated to the peregrine falcon, launched in 2024. This investment coin, which celebrates the fastest bird in the world, features a renewed and unique design for this year.

Like its predecessor, the coin has a face value of 5 euros. However, its circulation has increased significantly, from 15,000 pieces in 2024 to 20,000 in this edition. The minting will once again be carried out by Münze Österreich, the prestigious Austrian Mint, renowned for its expertise in bullion coins.

The Peregrine Falcon's Link to Malta

The link between the peregrine falcon and Malta has historical and cultural roots dating back to the time of the Order of the Knights of St. John, also known as the Knights of Malta. This link is mainly related to a symbolic tribute and a connection with the emblematic fauna of the island.

In 1530, Emperor Charles V granted the Order of St. John control of Malta in exchange for a symbolic annual tribute: a peregrine falcon. This falcon was to be given to the Viceroy of Sicily as a token of loyalty and gratitude for the cession of the islands.

The peregrine falcon was a prized bird in falconry, a practice highly valued among European nobility. It represented power, nobility and skill, qualities that were also associated with knights.

This historical connection inspired works such as The Maltese Falcon (1930), a novel by Dashiell Hammett that was later made into a famous film starring Humphrey Bogart. San Marino has dedicated a 10 euro silver coin to the “Guardia di Rocca” as this year marks the 270th anniversary of the birth of this permanent military body with police functions.

Guard of Rocca

The Guardia di Rocca is one of the military forces of the Republic of San Marino, one of the smallest countries in the world. Its historical and current mission is to protect citizens, the State, and to serve as an escort and guard of honour at official events. In addition, they carry out surveillance tasks at strategic points, especially at the three medieval towers located on Mount Titano, the symbol of San Marino.

It was founded in 1754, although its functions and roots date back to medieval times, when San Marino began to organize small militias to defend itself. The formalization of the Guardia di Rocca as a stable body came with the aim of having a force dedicated both to the defense of the territory and to the protection of state leaders and ceremonies.

Their uniform is very striking and traditional, with helmets, feathers, and colors that reflect the historical heritage of San Marino. One of the ceremonies that most attracts tourists is the Changing of the Guard, which takes place in the Public Palace and is a spectacle that combines tradition and solemnity.

Today, it remains one of the oldest institutions still in operation in San Marino, and one of the few active military bodies in the small republic.

 

The reverse of the coin shows a “Guardia di Rocca” in full uniform, with selective colour applied to the green jacket and some feathers on the hat, collar, jacket cuffs and trousers. Completing the composition is the upper inscription “GUARDIA DI ROCCA”, on the left the name of the author “A. NAPOLIONE”, the face value “10 EURO”, on the right the letter R, identifying the Mint of Rome, next to it, the year of issue “2024”, and below, the initials of the engraver “AV.INC” (Antonio Vecchio).
