In 2025, it will be 150 years since Georges Bizet's death, and San Marino has joined the commemoration with a remarkable piece of coins. The new 5-euro coin issued by the world's oldest republic is part of the "Great Music Composers" series and is dedicated to the celebrated French composer, whose name has been eternally linked to a work: Carmen.Despite being French and having never set foot in Spain, Bizet managed to capture something profoundly Spanish in Carmen . The coin's design makes this clear from the first glance: a flamenco dancer raising a fan, a charging bull, and a bullfighter in the act. These are images that could be mistaken for an Andalusian folklore print, but here they become a symbol of a deeper connection: that of music as a bridge between cultures.
Carmen , premiered in 1875, not only revolutionized opera with its emotional rawness and unvarnished portrayal of a free, defiant, and tragic woman. It also introduced to the European stage an artistic vision of Spain that, though born of the French imagination, resonated powerfully with its vitality, rhythm, and character. Bizet, like so many artists of his time, looked south with fascination, translating into musical notes what he saw as passion, danger, desire, and freedom.
The coin is more than a simple tribute: it's a reminder of the evocative power of art. With each relief—the notes floating across the staff, the folds of the dress, the tense gesture of the bullfighter—it honors not only the composer, but also the spirit of a work that has transcended borders. Because Carmen is not just a French opera; it is also part of Spain's symbolic heritage and, by extension, of universal culture.
At a time when art remains a vehicle for understanding and reconnecting with the foreign, San Marino has made the right choice by choosing Bizet as the central figure of this new coin. A small collectible that encapsulates a story of music, drama... and a country that inspired a genius.
The Coin
In the center, a woman is depicted in profile, her hair tied back and dressed in a long dress decorated with flowers. She raises a fan in one hand, while the other falls back, suggesting a dance pose. To the right, a bull is seen facing a caped bullfighter, in a scene clearly inspired by a bullfight. Above them, a curved musical staff floats in the air. To the left, the value "5 EURO" appears vertically, next to the designer's signature "D. LONGO INC." On the right side, the dates "1875 • 2025" are inscribed above the name "BIZET." The letter "R" is also included, indicating the Roman mint. The design features detailed relief with contrasts between smooth and textured surfaces, highlighting the figurative and decorative elements.
On the obverse of the coin, a semicircular inscription appears at the top with the name of the issuing country, "REPUBBLICA DI SAN MARINO" (Republic of San Marino). Just below, in the center, the coat of arms of San Marino stands out, while at the bottom is the name of the obverse designer, "A. Napolione" (Antonella Napolione).
