On April 15, the National Bank of Ukraine issued a 10-hryvnia silver coin as part of the "Ukrainian Heritage" series. This issue pays tribute to Lyubov Panchenko, a renowned Ukrainian fashion designer and outstanding artist of the 1960s. The coin embodies her indomitable spirit and deep commitment to national traditions, while honoring her invaluable contribution to the development of Ukrainian culture and art, which she fervently championed and celebrated.

Lyubov Panchenko (1938–2022)

An honorary citizen of Bucha and winner of the Vasyl Stus Prize, the future designer was born on the eve of World War II, on February 2, 1938, in the village of Yablunivka, Kyiv region. Her childhood was spent in a strict family environment, where her artistic impulses were not always welcomed. However, her thirst for creativity never faded.

Studying at the kyiv School of Applied Arts was a springboard for Panchenko, where her talent strengthened and she acquired professional qualities. While working in a sewing workshop and later at the Khreshchatyk Model House, the artist tirelessly pursued her own style, painting, drawing, and creating national costumes and outfits for Ukrainian ensembles.

Later, she worked as a fashion designer at the Technological Institute of Design and Development. Her designs for Ukrainian embroidered clothing and shirts were published in the magazine Soviet Woman, and her embroidery patterns were used by artisans throughout the country.

During a period of widespread attacks on Ukrainian culture, the artist worked tirelessly to preserve cultural heritage and national identity. Her efforts revived the traditions of Christmas carols and nativity scenes in Kyiv.

His involvement with the Kyiv Creative Youth Club was a breath of fresh air for Panchenko. There, he met like-minded individuals, such as Vasyl Stus, Ivan Svitlychnyi, Nadiia Svitlychna, Yevhen Sverstiuk, and many others. Together, they created a new Ukrainian culture, boldly asserting its right to freedom of expression and national identity.

The celebrated fashion designer died at the age of 84 as a result of the occupation of Bucha by Russian troops, leaving an indelible mark on the art world. Her works are currently housed in the Museum of the Sixties and in several private collections.

The obverse of the coin features a stylized portrait of Lyubov Panchenko, framed by elements inspired by her renowned work, Bucha Spring. Her gaze, charged with creative energy and a spirit of freedom, seems to traverse time and space, symbolizing inner strength and fidelity to her ideals. To the left of the portrait are the small coat of arms of Ukraine and the inscription "Lyubov Panchenko." To the right are the year of issue "2025," the name of the issuing country "UKRAINE," and the coin's face value. This composition underscores the artist's deep connection to her homeland.

The reverse of the coin features a fragment of Lyubov Panchenko's Bucha Spring, rendered in color with some details. This creation is not just a painting, but a true manifestation of beauty and indomitable spirit. Bucha, the artist's birthplace and residence, is inseparable from her legacy. The image engraved on the coin remains an indelible memory in the city and in the hearts of those who admire her talent, becoming a symbol of hope and rebirth.
