Although this year's 40-euro coin is dedicated to the Training Cruise of the Training Ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano, there is no doubt that the main protagonist and main attraction of this new issue is Princess Leonor, who is part of the crew on its 17th Training Cruise.
The basic version of the coin will be unveiled next Monday, June 2, and can be purchased at Bank of Spain branches, select commercial banks, and the National Mint and Stamp Factory (FNMT) store.
For those who desire a more exclusive edition, a wallet-style version will be released, with a limited edition of 7,500 units. This edition will be available starting Monday, June 9, in coin shops nationwide.
In the images above you can see the wallet that presents this Special version of the coin, which goes on sale for a recommended retail price of €64.
Obverse design: Portrait of Princess Leonor
The obverse of the coin features an official portrait of Her Royal Highness the Princess of Asturias, Doña Leonor de Borbón y Ortiz, facing left and wearing the uniform of a Midshipman. This portrait symbolizes her commitment to her military training and adds a new chapter to the series of coins that feature her likeness.
At the top, the legend "FELIPE VI REY DE ESPAÑA" appears, along with the year of issue, 2025. At the bottom, surrounded by two anchors, the inscription "PRINCESA LEONOR" can be read. All of this is surrounded by a delicate pearl beading that adds an elegant and classic touch to the design.
Reverse design: The Training Ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano
The reverse of the coin depicts the Training Ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano, a symbol of tradition and excellence in the training of officers in the Spanish Navy since 1927. This image pays tribute to the ship on which Princess Leonor completed an essential part of her naval training.
The coin's face value, 40 EURO, and the mint mark appear at the top; to its right, a quadruple latent image is shown within a circle. At the top of the coin, from left to right and in a circular direction and in capital letters, appears the legend "CRUCERO DE INSTRUCCIÓN – JUAN SEBASTIÁN DE ELCANO." The motifs and legends are surrounded by pearl beading.
Special Security Feature: Quadruple Latent Image
As an advanced security feature, the FNMT has patented the latent quadruple image. Depending on the viewing angle, different images can be seen: the mint mark, the number 25, a rudder, and waves. This innovative system not only adds artistic complexity but also guarantees the coin's authenticity.
