2026 marks the centenary of the founding of the Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Belges (SNCB), the Belgian national railway company. To commemorate this anniversary, the Monnaie Royale de Belgique has issued a new commemorative €2 coin that pays tribute to an institution that has played a vital role in the country's mobility since 1926. 

SNCB is celebrating this anniversary throughout the year with numerous cultural and educational activities. These include musical events, initiatives related to railway heritage, and open days at some of its workshops, allowing the public to discover different aspects of the history and evolution of the Belgian railway.

A century of railway represented on a coin

The coin takes as its starting point the visual identity created for the SNCB centenary.

At the top of the design is the historic Belgian railway logo, a letter "B" inside an oval designed in 1935 by illustrator Jean De Roy. On either side are the dates 1926 and 2026, marking the company's century of history.

The central element is the number 100, represented by railway rails. The two zeros form an infinity symbol, an element that is part of the official centenary logo and represents continuous movement, the connection between people and territories, and the continuity of rail travel through time.

From the symbol itself emerge two trains separated by a century of technological evolution. On the left is a locomotive from 1926, while on the right appears a contemporary train from 2026. In this way, the design brings together in a single composition the origins of the company and its current reality.

At the bottom is the indication of the issuing country, "BE", accompanied by the mint mark, represented by an Erlenmeyer flask with an asterisk, and the mint mark of the Royal Netherlands Mint, represented by the staff of Mercury. The entire design is surrounded by a dotted border.

The coin was designed by Iris Bruijns.

A limited edition of 157,000 copies

Unlike many commemorative 2 euro coins intended for circulation, this issue is marketed exclusively in collector formats. 

The Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) version is presented on a themed coincard dedicated to the SNCB centenary. Two variants, with the same design, have been produced, one in French and the other in Dutch, with a maximum print run of 75,000 copies each. 

A Proof quality version is also issued, limited to 4,000 copies, presented in a case with a numbered certificate. 

Alongside it is a Reverse Proof version, limited to 3,000 pieces. In this quality, the raised elements have a glossy finish while the background appears matte, creating the characteristic contrast typical of this type of coinage.

Adding up all the presentations, the issue reaches a maximum of 157,000 coins.

Belgium has decided to look to its past to shape one of its latest bullion issues. To mark the centenary of the "Belga ," the monetary unit created in 1926 amidst the instability following the First World War, the country now presents its contemporary reinterpretation: the new Gold Belgian.

Far from being a mere commemorative coin, this coin was conceived as an investment and carries a clear symbolic intention. Designed by the artist Iris Bruijns and minted by the Royal Netherlands Mint, the issue combines a contemporary visual language with a strong historical foundation. The result is an elegant, understated coin, rich in meaning.

The new Belgian Gold coin is available in two sizes: a one-ounce piece with a face value of 300 euros, and a quarter-ounce piece with a face value of 75 euros. Both are minted in 999.9 fine gold and share the exact same design.

But to understand the true significance of this currency, we must go back a century. In late 1925, Belgium left the Latin Monetary Union due to the constant devaluation of its currency. Minister Émile Francqui implemented a program to stabilize the Belgian franc, and one of the measures adopted in the decree of October 25, 1926, was the creation of the Bélgica, with a value of 5 francs.

This new currency was intended to replace the Belgian franc in the international foreign exchange market. In this way, Belgium distanced itself from the French franc, which was then in crisis.

DESIGN

The obverse features a stylized lily, the floral emblem of the Brussels region. The image is surrounded by the upper inscriptions of the coin's name, "BELGA GOLD," and its purity, "9999." The lower portion of the design displays the metal and its weight, while the designer's initials, "IB" (Iris Bruijns), appear to one side of the central image.

The reverse features a modern, simplified Belgian lion on a shield. At the top, the name of the issuing country is inscribed in the three official national languages: “BELGIQUE,” “BELGIË,” and “BELGIEN.” The reverse also includes the mint mark of the Belgian Mint and the Royal Netherlands Mint, both flanking the year of issue, “2026,” on either side.

To mark the 25th anniversary of the inclusion of the Neolithic Flint Mines of Spiennes on the UNESCO World Heritage List, the Royal Belgian Mint recently issued a 10-euro silver proof collector coin. This piece pays tribute to one of the oldest and most extensive prehistoric sites in Europe.

In 2000, the Spiennes Flint Mines were inscribed on UNESCO's World Natural and Cultural Heritage List. These Neolithic mines were discovered by chance in the 19th century during the construction of a railway line. They represent one of the oldest examples of human industrial activity in Europe. Between 4200 and 2500 BC, huge quantities of flint were extracted, covering an area of ​​more than 100 hectares.

Flint is a very hard sedimentary rock composed primarily of silicon. Due to its homogeneous structure, its flakes are extremely sharp, which was undoubtedly ideal for primitive man, who used them to make all kinds of instruments, tools, and weapons. However, what was particularly useful was that striking the flint against a rock containing iron would produce sparks and immediately ignite a fire. This is also the origin of names like "vuursteen," "flintstone," and "Feuerstein" in some languages.

The obverse of the piece features a particularly realistic drawing of a flint hand axe made of flint, framed by stylized rustic motifs. The inscriptions of the issue's motif are framed: "NEOLITHIC FLINT MINES AT SPIENNES" and "25 YEARS UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE."

The reverse of the coin features the official portrait of King Philippe, facing right, accompanied by his royal monogram and the year of issue "2025." In Belgium, the new Euroset 2024 in FDC (Flower Die) quality dedicated to the city of Namur has just gone on sale. This is made up of the eight regular Belgian circulation coins with a mint date of the current year, and two more coins of 2.5 euros, previously issued individually and dedicated to the "Year of James Ensor" and "The Bees." .

As a continuation of the series of Eurosets dedicated to Brussels, Antwerp, Liege, Ghent and Eupen, this time it is Namur's turn. Due to its strategic position at the confluence of the Sambre and Meuse rivers, Namur has been the target of numerous offensive actions in the past. Its impressive citadel, which offers spectacular views of the city, is a silent witness to this. Despite a turbulent history of more than 20 centuries, Namur has managed to preserve its heritage. Visitors will quickly realize this when they enter the baroque cathedral of Saint-Aubain, discover the Théâtre Royal or the Musée des Arts Anciens, which houses a splendid religious treasure. 2.5 euro coin dedicated to the Year of James Ensor

The coin shows, in the background, the two central figures of the Belgian artist's work called "The Intrigue." While on the left side of the composition, in relief, we see the famous "Self-portrait with a flower hat." Under the design there is also the signature of the painter Ensor and a reference to the "Year" of James Ensor, since 2024 was declared the year of the artist.

2.5 euro coin dedicated to The Bees

 

 The coin features a bee and a stylized cherry blossom. In the background is the map of Belgium represented in the form of bee cells. This image becomes more or less visible by changing the position coin.

In Belgium, a new coin with a face of 2.5 euros is issued to highlight the importance of the Bee, both in the country itself and in the rest of the planet.

In addition to their role as honey producers, bees are vitally important pollinators. Without their active contribution, as well as that of bumblebees, butterflies and bats, our food security would be seriously threatened. In fact, without bees, there would be no coffee, nuts, vegetables, fruits…

Unfortunately, bee populations around the world have declined significantly in recent decades. Belgium is no exception. Intensive agriculture, rampant urbanization and irrational use of pesticides have taken a heavy toll. Fortunately, in recent years many initiatives have been taken to increase the birth rate in our colonies. In 2017, the United Nations decided to proclaim May 20 as World Bee Day and many countries have launched awareness-raising actions such as “Stop mowing in May.” Thus, there would be more flowers and less grass in our parks and gardens, which will produce much more pollen for bees.

This 2.5 euro euro coin highlights the ecological importance of our bees and at the same time reminds us that it is essential to protect their biodiversity against alterations to our environment and our climate.

The coin comes presented on a coincard and is available in two languages, French and Dutch, with a small variation in the card design.

On an exact date yet to be determined (late May to early June) a commemorative 2 euro coin will be issued in Belgium under the name "Fight against cancer in Belgium", a coin that unfortunately will not go into circulation, it will only be available in presentations for which a premium will have to be paid, something already common with the currencies of this country.

The coin has a circulation of 130,000 units. 125,000 coincards are distributed in two coincards in BU quality, one in Dutch and the other in French, while the other 5,000 pieces in Proof quality are presented in a case.

FIGHT AGAINST CANCER IN BELGIUM

In recent years, science has made spectacular progress in the fight against cancer, increasing survival rates and lengthening life expectancy. Although the diagnosis of cancer is especially affecting and the road to recovery is difficult, we should not be discouraged. Together we must dare to fight cancer. Here, not only the very specific contribution of the oncologist plays an invaluable role, but also the support of the psychologist and physiotherapist. Without forgetting the precious help of the caregiver or volunteer, of course.

In Belgium, around 205 people are diagnosed with cancer every day. Especially for them, as well as for everyone involved, the Belgian Mint issues a 2 euro coin that is intended to be a sincere gesture of awareness and solidarity.

THE COIN

 

 

The obverse of the coin shows a stylized rainbow at the top as a symbol of hope for a cancer-free world, with the country code BE and the year of issue 2024. In the center is the representation of a heartbeat in form of bow that is often used to express our solidarity. At the bottom appears the bilingual inscription: “Lutte contre le cancer – Strijd tegen kanker”, surrounded by the initials IB of the designer Iris Bruijns, the mark of the master of the Mint (an Erlenmeyer flask) and the mark mint (the staff of Mercury).
