O nouă monedă comemorativă din Insulele Cook - 21.08.2026 - VIDEO

Few stories better illustrate the triumph of intelligence over brute force than that of the Trojan Horse. After ten years of war and unable to breach the city walls, the Greeks resorted to a deception that would forever alter the course of the conflict, transforming a colossal wooden structure into one of the most universal symbols of strategy.

This legendary scene inspires TROJAN HORSE, a new collector coin presented by Power Coin. Minted in five ounces of pure silver, the piece transforms the celebrated horse into a carefully crafted composition designed to convey all the monumentality and tension of the story.

Its production is limited to only 499 copies worldwide, a particularly small print run for a coin that combines mythology, sculpture and some of the most advanced techniques in contemporary numismatics.

The deception that decided the Trojan War

The story of the Trojan Horse is set during the final episode of the war fought between the Greeks and the city of Troy. According to epic tradition, the conflict began after Paris, a Trojan prince, eloped with Helen, wife of King Menelaus of Sparta. This affront prompted the formation of a large Greek expedition led by Agamemnon, Menelaus's brother, which sailed to the coast of Asia Minor with the intention of recovering Helen and punishing the Trojans.

For years, attackers tried to conquer a city protected by walls considered virtually impregnable. The war was marked by duels, rivalries between heroes, and heavy losses on both sides, but no offensive managed to definitively breach Troy's defenses.

It was then that the Greeks abandoned direct force and turned to ingenuity. Tradition attributes to Odysseus—Ulysses in Roman mythology— the idea of building a gigantic wooden horse inside which a group of soldiers could be hidden.

After erecting the structure, most of the Greek army pretended to retreat and left the horse in front of the city as if it were an offering to the gods. The Trojans interpreted its presence as a sign of victory and decided to bring it inside the city walls, despite warnings from those who suspected it might be a trap.

The well-known Latin expression "Timeo Danaos et dona ferentes," usually translated as "I fear the Greeks even when they bring gifts," comes precisely from this episode. In Virgil's Aeneid, the priest Laocoön utters these words when he distrusts the supposed gift left by the enemy.

However, the warnings went unheeded. When night fell and the city slept after the celebrations, the hidden warriors emerged from the belly of the horse and opened the gates of Troy. The Greek army then returned and entered the city, ending a war they had been unable to win by force.

A design of extraordinary sculptural depth

The coin was minted using smartminting® 4.0 and features a high relief that elevates the horse well above the coin's field. The Proof finish, with its polished surfaces and meticulously treated areas, intensifies the contrast between the different planes and helps to highlight the complexity of each element.

REVERSE

The reverse side is dominated by the gigantic figure of the Trojan Horse, depicted from a striking low-angle perspective. The observer appears to be standing directly beneath the structure and looking up at it, a choice that visually multiplies its dimensions.

The legs project into the foreground while the horse's body rises to fill almost the entire surface. The planks, rivets, beams, joints, and wooden reinforcements have been meticulously reproduced, underscoring that behind the illusion lay a massive construction project.

The animal's posture appears static, yet the design maintains a strong narrative tension. The horse remains silent before the city, although the viewer knows the threat hidden within and the fate that awaits Troy.

In the background, its walls, gates, and buildings can still be seen intact. Above them rises a large full moon that illuminates the scene and foreshadows the arrival of night, when the Greek soldiers will abandon their hiding place.

The use of high relief is especially noticeable when the coin is viewed in profile. The figure stands out prominently from the background, making the result resemble a small circular sculpture more than a conventional coin.

OBVERSE

The obverse offers a more conceptual interpretation of the story and focuses attention on the intellectual and technical process that made the deception possible. The surface is covered with a complex network of gears, pulleys, ropes, rollers, hooks, and various other mechanisms.

These elements evoke the enormous effort required to build and transport the horse to the gates of Troy. At the same time, they remind us that the famous plan did not depend solely on a brilliant idea: it also demanded labor, coordination, technical expertise, and precise execution.

On the right side of the design emerges a stylized light bulb, an element that functions as an immediate representation of thought and the instant in which an idea arises, thus becoming a visual metaphor for Odysseus's ingenuity.

A succession of zigzag lines covers the entire surface. At first glance, it appears to be a perfectly ordered geometric composition, but something begins to disrupt its rhythm: the lines curve, lose their regularity, and eventually become the stripes of a tiger emerging from within the coin.

This is how Tiger, the new Power Coin issue for 2026 and the third installment in the Camouflage of Nature series, is presented. The coin has been minted in 3 ounces of silver, employs Smartminting® high relief, and has a limited mintage of only 499 pieces worldwide.

The collection thus maintains the idea that made it recognizable from its first coin: the animal is not simply placed against a background. It is its very presence that distorts the pattern and transforms geometry into nature.

Tiger, the third installment in the Camouflage of Nature series. Image: Power Coin.

A tiger that is not above the pattern: it is born from it.

The reverse is constructed from hundreds of black and silver lines arranged in a chevron pattern. In the upper area, they maintain an almost hypnotic regularity; as they approach the center, they begin to break up, giving way to the head and body of a white tiger seen from the front.

The figure appears to advance from the background of the piece. Its stripes blend with the zigzags that surround it, and beneath the animal, the design dips and stretches out, forming a kind of concave trail. The effect is reminiscent of how striped fur breaks down the silhouette of a tiger among the vegetation: what should betray its presence is precisely what allows it to disappear.

The date 2026 appears discreetly at the bottom. Everything else is subordinated to the optical illusion, without a traditional border to interrupt the design's continuity.

The oblique view allows one to appreciate the depth achieved in the tiger's body. Image: Power Coin.

From flat drawing to a sculptural surface

Much of Tiger 's visual impact stems from the contrast between two distinct styles. The lines suggest a flat, graphic image, while the feline rises with a pronounced volume. Smartminting® High Relief technology allows this depth to be developed within a 45-millimeter diameter, making the figure appear to emerge from the silver.

The Proof finish emphasizes the separation between the polished surfaces, the dark lines, and the animal's modeling. Therefore, the coin's appearance changes depending on the angle and the angle of the light: from the front, the optical illusion is dominant; in perspective, its sculptural dimension emerges.

An obverse that brings together the patterns of the collection

The obverse retains the common visual language of Camouflage of Nature. Different shapes inspired by spots, stripes, and animal textures gradually transform into geometric motifs, summarizing the idea that gives meaning to the entire series.

The Cook Islands' coat of arms is featured in the center, surrounded by the legends CAMOUFLAGE OF NATURE, COOK ISLAND, and 20 DOLLARS. The Power Coin logo is also discreetly integrated among the designs. The change in issuer distinguishes it from the Zebra and Leopard coins, which were issued by the Republic of Palau.

Tiger in motion

The photographs illustrate the concept, but it's when you rotate the coin that the combination of relief, reflections, and broken lines is best understood. The official video shows how the tiger's silhouette appears and disappears within the pattern as the viewing angle changes.

From Zebra stripes to Leopard spots

The Camouflage of Nature series was launched in 2023 with Zebra. Its reverse side featured horizontal black and silver lines that dipped when they encountered a zebra viewed from above. The animal's stripes blended into the background, creating an illusion of movement without the need for color.

Zebra, Palau 2023: the first installment transformed stripes into an illusion of depth. Image: Power Coin.

A year later came Leopard. The second coin replaced the lines with a pattern of spots that seemed to envelop the surface, while the feline, curled up on itself, altered the size and direction of the spots. The selective use of color made the animal stand out more clearly, although without visually separating it from the surrounding pattern.

Leopard, Palau 2024: Spots replaced stripes as a camouflage technique. Image: Power Coin.

The first two releases share with Tiger the weight of 3 ounces, the diameter of 45 millimeters, the Proof quality, the Smartminting® high relief, and a mintage of 499 pieces. Both Zebra and Leopard also had special 5-ounce gold editions, also limited to 499 pieces.

After the 2025 hiatus, the new coin returns to the black and white design of the first issue, but replaces the horizontal lines with zigzags and presents the relief in a much more frontal composition. In this way, the three coins maintain a common identity without exactly repeating the same visual element.

The Coin of the Year (COTY) awards are a prestigious recognition in the world of numismatics, organized annually since 1984 by the American magazine World Coin News. These awards highlight the design, artistic vision and craftsmanship of the coins issued in the previous year.

Nominations for the Coin of the Year (COTY) awards are chosen through a detailed and rigorous process:

Initial Selection: Coins issued in the previous year are reviewed by a committee of numismatic experts. This committee is comprised of editors of World Coin News as well as other specialists in the field.
Grading Criteria: Coins are graded based on several criteria, including:Artistic Design: The quality and creativity of the design.
Technical Innovation: New techniques or materials used in manufacturing.
Historical or Cultural Relevance: The importance of the subject represented on the coin.
Popularity: Acceptance and popularity among collectors and the general public.
Nominations: After evaluation, the coins that best meet these criteria are selected. These coins are grouped into different categories, such as Best Gold Coin, Best Silver Coin, Most Artistic Coin, among others.

Voting: The nominated coins are then voted on by an international panel of judges, which includes numismatists, historians and other experts. This panel determines the winning coins in each category.

This process ensures that the awarded coins are not only of high quality, but also represent the best in terms of design, innovation and cultural relevance.

CURRENCY OF THE YEAR 2024

Once the winners are known, by category, we will now know which has been the absolute winner and proclaimed COIN OF THE YEAR 2024. Let's get to know it in depth.

The United States Mint was the big winner, with its high-relief $100 gold American Liberty coin featuring the theme “Freedom Through Perseverance.”

Currency details

The US Mint issued this pure gold coin in 2023, the sixth in a series launched in 2015 under the name “American Liberty”. It was available for purchase from August 10 of last year.

The “American Liberty” collection celebrates modern interpretations of the concept of American liberty, exploring the theme beyond the classical tradition of allegorical portraits of “Liberty.”

Since its establishment more than 230 years ago, the United States Mint has issued a wide variety of coins featuring the concept of liberty personified by allegorical female figures. However, this piece offers a different interpretation: a bold representation of the perseverance of American freedom.

The obverse of the coin depicts a Pinus longaeva, a species native to California, Nevada, and Utah. It is believed to be one of the oldest living organisms on Earth, as it can live up to 5,000 years. Long-lived pines grow in places where other plants cannot, and are often the first species to repopulate the land after natural disasters, such as a lava flow or glacial runoff. The coin features the following inscriptions: “LIBERTY”, “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the year of issue “2023”.

The coin was engraved by Joseph Menna and designed by Elana Hagler.

The reverse design, meanwhile, features a young bald eagle standing on a rocky outcrop, moments before taking flight. It features the inscriptions of the issuing country “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the quantity and purity of the metal “1 OZ.” and “.9999 FINE GOLD,” the face value “$100,” and the Latin legend “E PLURIBUS UNUM” (OUT OF MANY, ONE).

A symbol of bravery and loyalty, Power Coin brings us closer to one of the most relevant historical monuments in Switzerland, the Lion Monument. Located in the city of Lucerne, the magnificent sculpture was originally created by the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen to commemorate the death in 1792 of around 760 mercenaries of the Swiss Guard, who lost their lives during the French Revolution.

The precious coin, composed of 1 ounce of silver, makes use of different finishes to highlight the most important elements of the composition, thus transporting us, also with its elaborate Proof quality, to the very nature of the natural rock in which the work is carved. original.

The reverse of the piece shows a faithful and beautiful representation of the Lion of Lucerne monument carved into a natural rock wall in Switzerland. The animal, with a more polished finish, lies on the ground wounded by a spear, while his pain is reflected on his face. Under its paw is represented a shield with the fleur-de-lys of the French monarchy. The coin is framed by the inscriptions: "HELVETIORUM FIDEI AC VIRTUTI" (to the faith and virtues of the Swiss) and the name of the coin "LÖWENDENKMAL LUZERN" (Monument of the Lion of Lucerne).

Likewise, the obverse of the coin presents the effigy of King Charles III surrounded by the inscriptions of the face value of the piece “5 DOLLARS”, the name of the monarch “CHARLES III”, the year of issue “2024” and the issuing country “ COOK ISLANDS.
