On June 25, the National Bank of Hungary added a new commemorative coin to its currency offerings, dedicated to the Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County in the capital city of Miskolc, one of the country's richest regions in terms of history, culture, and landscapes. The coin is available in two different metals.
Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén: one of the most diverse regions in Hungary
Located in northeastern Hungary, bordering Slovakia, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County is the second largest in the country and one of the most populous. Its capital, Miskolc, is also the main urban center of northern Hungary and an important economic, cultural, and industrial hub.
The current county was established in 1950 as a result of an administrative reorganization that unified most of the former historical counties of Borsod, Abaúj-Torna, and Zemplén —territories whose roots stretch back to the Middle Ages and which for centuries played a strategic role in the organization of the Kingdom of Hungary. The new division retained Miskolc as the administrative capital, consolidating the importance the city had acquired since the 18th century and especially during the industrialization process of the 19th century.
One of the most distinctive features of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén is its extraordinary geographical diversity. The mountains of northern Hungary converge within its territory, creating a landscape of mountain ranges, plateaus, river valleys, and extensive agricultural areas. Among its natural features are the Bükk mountain range, the Zemplén mountains, and the Aggtelek karst region, while rivers such as the Sajó, the Hernád, and the Bodrog flow through the county, shaping much of its landscape.
The region also boasts a first-rate cultural heritage. The county encompasses most of the historic Tokaj-Hegyalja wine region, the birthplace of the distinctive Tokaji wine, considered one of the oldest wine-growing areas in the world and declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Alongside it, the Aggtelek Karst Caves and the Slovak Karst Caves, also inscribed on the World Heritage List, make the county one of the Hungarian regions with the highest concentration of sites internationally recognized for their natural and cultural value.
During the 20th century, especially during the socialist period, Miskolc and much of the surrounding county experienced intense industrial development based on steelmaking, mining, and heavy industry, becoming one of Hungary's economic engines. Following the economic transition of the 1990s, the region began a process of restructuring focused on services, tourism, and the promotion of its abundant historical and natural heritage —sectors that now play an increasingly important role in its economy.

Obverse
The central motif on the obverse depicts the bell tower of the Avas Reformed Church in Miskolc, surrounded by the funerary monuments of the historic Avas Reformed Cemetery. The Avas television tower rises in the background.
On the left of the design is the year of minting, "2026". On the right, distributed in three lines, are the face value and the mint mark "BP." (Budapest).
On the edge of the coin, following the contour, the inscription "MAGYARORSZÁG" (Hungary) can be read in the upper right part and "MISKOLC" in the lower center part.
The designer Gábor Kereszthury's brand appears discreetly integrated into the composition, on the left side.
Reverse
The reverse depicts the main geographical and hydrographic features of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County. On the left are the Bükk mountain range and plateau; in the center are the Cserehát hills; and on the right, the distinctive Zemplén mountain range. In the background are the Tatra Mountains, while in the foreground is the confluence of the Sajó and Hernád rivers on the plain.
The design is completed, on the left side, with a topographic map of the county delimited by its main rivers, in which the city of Miskolc is indicated by a dot.
At the top of the border, distributed in three lines, there is the inscription: «BORSOD-ABAÚJ-ZEMPLÉN VÁRMEGYE» (Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County).
