O nouă monedă comemorativă din Cipru - 29.11.2025

Utilizați butonul de Translate din dreapta pagini pentru traducere.

The Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) will soon issue a new silver collector coin with a face value of €5; which is dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the start of the EOKA national struggle.

April 1, 2025 marked the 70th anniversary of the start of the national struggle of EOKA (Ethniki Organosis Kyprion Agoniston, National Organization of Cypriot Fighters), a movement that between 1955 and 1959 led the armed resistance against British colonial rule in Cyprus.

From its founding, EOKA embodied the yearning for self-government, national dignity, and the aspiration for union with Greece (enosis). Beginning on April 1, 1955, its members carried out a series of coordinated actions against British installations, initiating what became known as the "Cyprus Emergency."

During those years, EOKA not only carried out military operations, but also wove a network of social resistance: its activities involved not only combat, but also community mobilization, neighborhood solidarity and deep involvement of young people and families.

In towns like Paralimni, in the east of the island, commemorative events were organized to honor the fallen and highlight the role of local communities in that effort for freedom.

At the institutional level, the Cypriot state has commemorated this event through official and symbolic acts. For example, President Nikos Christodoulides participated in a commemorative event in Nicosia, recalling that the events of 1955 marked “a turning point in the history of Cyprus.”

OBVERSE

The obverse of the coin shows an image of the emblem of the Central Bank of Cyprus, along with the upper inscriptions "KYPROS", "CYPRUS" and "KIBRIS", and below, the year of issue "2025".

REVERSE

The reverse of the piece, for its part, contains a central image, framed by laurel branches, of the second in command of the EOKA, Grigoris Afxentiou, who gave his life for the freedom of Cyprus on March 3, 1957, in a battle that went down in history as a symbol of courage and selflessness. Framing his image is the upper inscription «ФПХ БНДСЕЙЩМЕНПХ П ИБНБФПУ ИБНБФПУ ДЕН ЛПГЙЕФБЙ» (THE DEATH OF THE BRAVE IS NOT CONSIDERED DEATH), below, on the right side, the face value «€5» and in the lower area of the composition, the commemorative inscription «ЕПКБ 1955-59».

Pay attention to the information I bring you today, August 7, and we could be talking about the 2 euro commemorative coin with the lowest mintage of all those issued to date, far exceeding the 10,000 units of the one issued by Monaco in 2015 under the name "800 Years of the Fortress of Monaco."

Thanks to our colleague Paul (Euromunter) I have had access to a document sent by the Central Bank of Cyprus to the European Commission, in which the Cypriot side requests approval for the issuance of a commemorative 2 euro coin during the fourth quarter of 2024 to commemorate the “20th Anniversary of the Accession of Cyprus to the European Union”. Within this document, which describes the design of the coin and offers a first image of it, it can also be read that the volume of the coin will be 7,000 units, all presented in a case.

Now it will be up to the European Commission and the countries that belong to the Eurozone to veto or not this proposal or to have it modified so that it is approved, something that normally does not take more than 15 working days. It is quite curious that the request for the issuance of this new currency was sent to the European Commission in the first days of August (day 5), when we all know that this month most people are on vacation, the system operates with minimal services and with people who are not usually the usual ones. So allow me to think that all this seems quite suspicious and aimed at passing the filters for approval without making too much noise.

The image I have of the coin is quite bad and in black and white, I have tried to color it and improve it a little so that it can be appreciated as best as possible.

Regarding the theme to which the future coin is dedicated, I will give you a few brief outlines.

20th Anniversary of Cyprus' Accession to the European Union

On 1 May 2004, Cyprus joined the European Union along with nine other countries. This year marks the 20th anniversary of that accession, a significant milestone for the island.

Cyprus' accession to the EU has brought with it numerous changes and challenges. While many Cypriots value the stability and economic opportunities that EU membership has provided, there are also mixed feelings due to the island's continued division and historical tensions with Turkey.

Among so many 2 euro commemorative coins there are some with rare designs, but I think the one I show you today is better than what I have seen so far. If the coin in hand doesn't change much, I think we may be facing one of the rarest and ugliest pieces in this extensive and growing collection.

The sketch that I show you is the one that Cyprus has sent to the European Commission and that has already been approved for the coin dedicated to the "60th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Central Bank of Cyprus".

The design shows tools on a microchip as a symbol of the stability of the economy in the modern industrial and digital age guaranteed by the Central Bank of Cyprus, which commemorates its sixty years of existence. At the bottom are the name of the issuing country "ΚYΠΡΟΣ KIBRIS" as well as the dates "1963-2023". On the
inside of the national side of the coin is the inscription "60 ΧΡOΝΙΑ ΑΠO ΤΗΝ IΔΡΥΣΗ ΤΗΣ ΚΕΝΤΡΙKHΣ ΤΡAΠΕΖΑΣ ΤΗΣ ΚYΠΡΟΥ" (ie sixty years from the foundation of the Central Bank of Cyprus). The circular crown of the coin features the twelve stars of the European flag.

412,000 units will be minted (400,000 for circulation and 12,000 for collectors in special presentations). The broadcast date has not been announced.

CENTRAL BANK OF CYPRUS

The Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) was established in 1963, shortly after Cyprus gained its independence, in accordance with the Central Bank of Cyprus Act 1963 and the relevant articles of the Constitution.

The main objective of the CBC is to guarantee price stability. Without prejudice to its primary objective, subject to fulfilling its obligations under the provisions of the Treaty establishing the European Community, as currently amended, the CBC supports the general economic policy of the government.

The CBC exercises all powers necessary to achieve its objectives, including powers deriving from the CBC's participation in the European System of Central Banks (ESCB).

Despre moneda comună care va fi emisă în Uniunea Europeană - 13.01.2022

It has just been published in the Official Journal of the European Union all the data referring to the issuance this year of a common type 2 euro commemorative coin. Thanks to this document, we already know that in the end there will be 19 States that will participate in this initiative and the emission volumes of each country will put this piece into circulation, which aims to highlight the 35th Anniversary of the Erasmus Program.

To celebrate 35 years of the Erasmus programme, euro area finance ministers decided that euro area member states would mint a 2 euro commemorative coin using a common design on the national side. The public chose the winning design in an online vote . Voters had a choice of six designs, which had been selected by a professional jury following a design competition among the Member States of the euro area, and chose the design created by Joaquin Jimenez, a professional designer at the Monnaie de Paris.

The countries that will participate in this initiative will be the following: Belgium, Germany, Estonia, Ireland, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia and Finland.

The design of the coin is a mix of two main elements of the Erasmus program: the original intellectual inspiration, Erasmus himself, and the allegory of his influence in Europe. The first is symbolized by one of the best-known representations of Erasmus. The second is symbolized by a bundle of links running through the coin from one lighthouse to another, representing the numerous intellectual and human exchanges between European students.

As a reference to Europe, some of these links form other stars, born from the synergy between the countries. Figure 35, for the 35th anniversary, rises from the stars in a contemporary graphic style.

As you have seen, the runs are also included, in general they are wide, but we have the exception of Malta, with only 82,500 coins it will be the most valued coin in the collection.

The currency will be issued in unison by all countries on July 1, 2022.

In 2022 we will not only have the common commemorative, each country can issue two more coins of this type, which according to the European Commission "must be dedicated to elements of great symbolism at the national or European level."

We already have the first data and official image of the 2022 common commemorative 2 euro coin dedicated to the "35th Anniversary of the Erasmus Program", which will be issued by one of the member countries of the euro zone. It is about Cyprus, who, apart from the sketch, announces an issue for the coin of 412,000 pieces, 400,000 will be put into circulation in rolls of 25 coins and the other 12,000 will be in presentations for collectors: coincard, capsule and case.

The design work of the general engraver of the Monnaie de Paris, Joaquín Jimenez, is a mixture of two main elements of the Erasmus program: the original intellectual inspiration, Erasmus himself, and the allegory of his influence in Europe. The first is symbolized by one of the best known representations of Erasmus.

The second is symbolized by a bundle of links that crosses the coin from one lighthouse to another, representing the numerous intellectual and human exchanges between European students.

As a reference to Europe, some of these links form other stars, born from the synergy between the countries. Figure 35, for the 35th anniversary, emerges from the stars in a contemporary graphic style.

As I have learned, all countries that issue this common commemorative 2 euro coin are expected to do so in unison during the month of July 2022.

Thanks for the information to colleague Paul (Euromunter)

The Central Bank of Cyprus officially issued on December 14 its commemorative 2 euro coin corresponding to 2020, with which it wants to recognize the «30 years of the Institute of Neurology and Genetics of Cyprus».

The Central Bank of Cyprus announces the issuance of a beautiful new coin depicting Leda and the Swan, an outstanding mosaic dating from the 2nd century AD, which decorated the floor of a Roman house found in Palaipafos (ancient Paphos) .

Exactly, the coin represents the moment when Leda, the beautiful and mythical queen of Sparta, had her first encounter with the god Zeus, who had turned into a swan to get closer to her. The mosaic is on display in the Kouklia Museum in Paphos. The coin has been designed by George Stamatopoulos and minted by the Greek mint.

The reverse of the coin shows a composition representing, in mosaic style, Leda standing next to the swan. The face value of the € 5 coin is also displayed.

The obverse of the coin shows the emblem of the Central Bank of Cyprus, the name of the issuing country, "CYPRUS", "ΚΥΠΡΟΣ", or "KIBRIS" and the year of issue "2020".

Characteristics of the coin

Metal: 925 Silver
Dimensions: 38.61 mm
Weight: 28.28 g

The 2-euro commemorative coin of Cyprus 2020 dedicated to the "30 years of the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics" has a somewhat peculiar design for what is usually represented on coins. I do not think that there are many where a neuron with its synapses are the protagonists of the design of a coin, but for the theme that commemorates this is a very successful composition.

For their information to be relevant, neurons must connect to each other forming circuits that make up the nervous system.

An adult brain is estimated to have some 100 billion neurons, each processing its own information, which it then sends to others that it also receives news from.

The synapse is a space, the one between a neuron and another cell (neuron or not). A very active place where things continually happen. Physically it is a separation, functionally a connection that transfers information from one cell to another.

The national face of the coin represents a "neuron with its synapses" in reference to the activities carried out by the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics, which is internationally recognized and plays an active and essential role as a center of national, regional excellence. and internationally for the provision of high-quality services, innovative research and postgraduate education. The name of the issuing country "ΚΥΠΡΟΣ KIBRIS" and the phrase "INETITOYTO NEYPOAORIAΣ & RENETIKHΣ KIMPOY 1990-2020" (Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics 1990-2020) appear on the inside of the national side of the coin. The outer ring of the coin represents the 12 stars of the European flag.

The inscription of the song will be the same as in the regular 2 euro coins issued by Cyprus "2 EYPΩ 2 EURO" repeated twice.

The coin will be issued during the fourth quarter of 2020 with an issue volume of 412,000 pieces, of which 12,000 will go to collectors in special presentations.

It appears that the commemorative 2 euro coin that Cyprus was also to issue for the "60th Anniversary of Independence" has finally been canceled.

My thanks to Paul (Euromunter) and Rudolf (Numisfreund).

Another occasion for which I would like to thank my friend Paul (Euromunter), for sending me the first image and information on the commemorative 2-euro coin that Cyprus is dedicating this year to the city of Paphos as European Capital of Culture 2017, honor that shares with the danish of Aarhus.

The coin represents the image of the ancient Odeon of Paphos, this small amphitheater built with limestone in the 2nd century was and is used as a building for theatrical and musical performances. In this same place will be held many events within the program Pafos 2017.

The expected emission volume for the coin is 430,000 pieces. The scheduled date of issue is during the month of November.

Paphos 2017

The motto of the hundreds of events organized by Paphos 2017 is the motto "Uniting continents, bridging cultures". The first Cypriot city to host the European Capital of Culture takes advantage of its multicultural experiences and geographical proximity to the Middle East and North Africa to strengthen relations between countries and between cultures. Paphos will become an immense open stage, an "open-air factory", where a tradition of thousands of years of cultural life in open spaces meets contemporary forms of creating, thinking and living.
