The Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) will soon issue a new silver collector coin with a face value of €5; which is dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the start of the EOKA national struggle.April 1, 2025 marked the 70th anniversary of the start of the national struggle of EOKA (Ethniki Organosis Kyprion Agoniston, National Organization of Cypriot Fighters), a movement that between 1955 and 1959 led the armed resistance against British colonial rule in Cyprus.
From its founding, EOKA embodied the yearning for self-government, national dignity, and the aspiration for union with Greece (enosis). Beginning on April 1, 1955, its members carried out a series of coordinated actions against British installations, initiating what became known as the "Cyprus Emergency."
During those years, EOKA not only carried out military operations, but also wove a network of social resistance: its activities involved not only combat, but also community mobilization, neighborhood solidarity and deep involvement of young people and families.
In towns like Paralimni, in the east of the island, commemorative events were organized to honor the fallen and highlight the role of local communities in that effort for freedom.
At the institutional level, the Cypriot state has commemorated this event through official and symbolic acts. For example, President Nikos Christodoulides participated in a commemorative event in Nicosia, recalling that the events of 1955 marked “a turning point in the history of Cyprus.”
