The Bank of Slovenia has announced the results of a competition to select the design of the commemorative 2-euro coin to be issued in 2026, dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of Ivan Cankar , one of the most important writers in Slovenian literature.

The winning design, which will ultimately be minted and put into circulation, was chosen after a competitive process that left the third place untouched, thus highlighting the outstanding quality of both the winning project and the runner-up.

Winning design submitted by Adam Breznik

Artistic description:

The winning design is inspired by the sculpture of Ivan Cankar created by sculptor Slavko Tihec , unveiled in front of the Cankarjev dom (Cankar Cultural Centre) in Ljubljana in 1982. The project artist has reinterpreted the original sculpture’s characteristic vertical cuts into a series of concentric structures within the coin’s golden core. These shapes alternate between convex and concave reliefs which, up close, are perceived as an abstract graphic pattern, but from afar reveal the recognizable silhouette of Ivan Cankar , as if emerging from the bottom of a coffee cup.

The typography used for the textual elements is Neue Haas Unica , a modern and clear sans serif font, which provides a balance between sobriety and contemporaneity.

Second place work by Edi Berk

Although it will not be minted, the second-place entry also offered a remarkable vision. While the document submitted for this proposal does not include a detailed textual description, a sober aesthetic is evident, with a more traditional composition. The design shows the figure of Ivan Cankar in profile, accompanied by key texts related to the anniversary. Judging by the graphic design, its focus was on highlighting the identity and memory of the figure in a clear and solemn way, possibly with a more figurative interpretation compared to the winning design.

A commemorative coin full of meaning

Ivan Cankar (1876–1918) is considered one of Slovenia's most influential literary figures. A writer, playwright, and essayist, his work addressed themes of social justice, national identity, and moral struggle. The issuance of this coin not only celebrates his legacy but also projects it into the future as a symbol of Slovenian culture.

Although the mintage volume and exact issue date have not yet been officially announced, following previous precedents, Slovenia is likely to issue 1 million units , as it has done with most of its 2 euro commemorative coins.

This coin will be part of the series of commemorative issues authorized within the framework of the euro and will circulate both in Slovenia and the rest of the eurozone countries, serving not only as a means of payment but also as a tangible reminder of the cultural significance of Ivan Cankar.

As usual, the commemorative 2 euro coin issued by Slovenia is leaving us at the end of the year and the 2024 coin was not going to be an exception. We already have official information from the Bank of Slovenia about everything related to this coin that will be issued on the 18th of this month of December.

The coin commemorates the “250th Anniversary of the National and University Library of Slovenia”. The design of this new coin was the result of a design competition held for the occasion, in which the design submitted by Mojca Mlinar and Dominik Košak was chosen, for which they received a prize of 4,000 euros.

According to the authors, the coin depicts the slightly tilted door handle of the National and University Library with a Pegasus. Pegasus is a mythological winged creature shaped like a horse that symbolically guides visitors to the library into the world of knowledge.

The coin, which has a mintage volume of 1 million pieces, will be put into circulation on 18 December. The Euroset BU and the Euroset Proof, which include the commemorative coin, will be released at the same time.

Breakdown of the issue

– 990,250 in rolls of 25 coins
– 6,000 within the Euroset BU
– 3,000 in Proof quality individually
– 750 in Proof quality within the Euroset Proof

The National and University Library of Slovenia (Narodna in univerzitetna knjižnica, NUK) celebrates its 250th anniversary in 2024. This important milestone commemorates its fundamental role in preserving, disseminating and enriching Slovenia's cultural and academic heritage.

Founded in 1774, during the reform period of Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, the institution initially emerged as a public library in the context of the Habsburg Empire. Since its inception, its mission has been to collect, preserve and make available to the public the literary and intellectual treasures of the country.

The current library building, located in Ljubljana, is a masterpiece by architect Jože Plečnik, opened in 1941. This space not only houses millions of historical books and manuscripts, but is also an architectural icon symbolising the connection between knowledge and Slovenian cultural identity. Its design, marked by classical and modern elements, reflects Slovenia’s rich history and its vision for the future.

Today, the library not only serves students and scholars of the University of Ljubljana, but also acts as the country's main national archive. Its collection contains medieval manuscripts, incunabula and a vast collection of works documenting the evolution of Slovenian language and literature. Moreover, its digitalisation and online access are expanding the possibilities for research and knowledge preservation.

As it turns 250, NUK reaffirms its commitment to education, research and cultural preservation. Its history reflects not only the evolution of Slovenia as a nation, but also the universal importance of libraries as guardians of human knowledge.

Once again, the Bank of Slovenia called a design competition to select one to mint on its 2 euro commemorative coin for the year 2025, which will be dedicated to the "Centenary of the birth of Miki Muster." A total of 33 designs were submitted to the competition. Both the winning sketch and the other two that were finalists have just been made public.

Before seeing the designs, let's get to know a little about the person to whom this commemorative 2 euro coin will be dedicated.

Miki Muster

Miki Muster (November 22, 1925 – May 7, 2018) was a Slovenian animator, illustrator, sculptor, comic book author, journalist and film director.

Miki Muster was the pioneer of comics in Slovenia and one of the most successful comic and cartoon artists. Although he graduated in sculpture from the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana, Muster discovered that he was more attracted to drawing. As the years went by, his drawing changed, becoming more sophisticated, just as his characters evolved and gained more facets and traits. In the 1950s and 1960s, Muster's comic strip characters, Zvitorepec, Trdonja and Lakotnik, appeared in the newspaper Slovenski poročevalec. His desire to explore the medium of cartoons took him to Munich, where he began drawing a series of animated films for Bavaria Film in 1973. His meeting with comedian and caricaturist Guillermo Mordillo in the mid-1970s led to a cartoon series and movies. The series was widely acclaimed and screened practically all over the world. Muster-Mordillo's cartoons were bought by television studios in thirty countries. Muster had the same success with his films about Nick Knatterton, based on the comic of the same name by Manfred Schmidt.

The winning design and the finalists

The winning design that will be minted on the coin is the work of Robert Žvokelj, and will also receive a prize of 4,000 euros.

Design by Daniela Vidmar Podboj and Tomaž Podboj, who came in second place and will receive a prize of 2,000 euros.

Design by Edi Berk, who came in third place and will receive 1,300 euros.

For now we do not know the volume or the date of issue. Based on previous years, the circulation could be 1 million pieces.

To this day we have not known when the last commemorative 2 euro coin of this year will be issued, a coin that will be put into circulation in Slovenia to celebrate the "150th anniversary of the birth of Josip Plemelj."

The design of this new commemorative 2 euro coin comes from a design competition organized by the Bank of Slovenia and won by Studio Čuk, Jasna Čuk Kolavčič sp.

This is what its designer explains about the coin and the character: «Josip Plemelj was especially gifted in mathematics, but he was also interested in astronomy, especially celestial mechanics. His research focused on differential and integral equations. His greatest success was the solution of the Riemann problem."

« The conceptual design of the coin shows parts of the equation that he was the first in the world to solve. Numbers and symbols rotate in circles that visualize the rotation of the planets, the movement in space and, at the same time, the union of individual irresolvable elements to form a whole. We wanted to vividly illustrate Plemelj's two fields of work and research: mathematics and astronomy ."

The coin, which has an issue volume of 1 million pieces, will be put into circulation on December 19. At the same time, the Euroset BU will go on sale, which includes the commemorative coin in the same quality. Proof quality coins will be issued later, on a date yet to be determined.

Issuance breakdown

– 990,250 in rolls of 25 coins
– 6,000 within the Euroset BU

On March 2, the Slovenian national commemorative 2-euro coin was issued in 2022, dedicated to the "150th anniversary of the birth of the architect Jože Plečnik", considered the most important Slovenian architect in history and one of the Slovenians most internationally recognized.

Jože Plečnik was a universal architect and artist who mastered his art at all scales, from book design and typography, to useful and ceremonial objects, through architecture in buildings, or applied to comprehensive urban planning. Just as Plečnik was versatile and had a somewhat mysterious personality, his works also have multiple meanings. They often hide ideas that were only revealed over time. Throughout his career he developed a unique architectural language, inspired by antiquity and geometric shapes, creating original and excellent solutions that in a way also reflect his personality.

The issue volume of this coin is 1,000,000 pieces, distributed as follows:

The Bank of Slovenia plans to issue a 3-euro bimetallic face coin for March 3 to honor the Slovenian painter Matija Jama, considered one of the most important representatives of Impressionism that the country has produced and of the It is the 150th anniversary of his birth.

The coin is issued in BU and Proof grades. The first will go on sale in Slovenia for 3 euros, and the second for 17. With the same design, but with different faces, silver and gold pieces, not bimetallic, are also issued at prices of 50 and 440 euros, respectively.

The central motif of the collector coin commemorating the 150th anniversary of the birth of the painter Matija Jama, are three young birch trunks. These represent the young man, the artist and the painter, who embark on their creative path in parallel. His brushstrokes create the basis for a dynamic background of soft relief, reminiscent of the surface of Impressionist paintings, and portray the painter's nomadic life. The design of the coin corresponds to Matej Štanta.

Despre moneda comună care va fi emisă în Uniunea Europeană - 13.01.2022

Utilizați butonul de Translate din dreapta pagini pentru traducere.

It has just been published in the Official Journal of the European Union all the data referring to the issuance this year of a common type 2 euro commemorative coin. Thanks to this document, we already know that in the end there will be 19 States that will participate in this initiative and the emission volumes of each country will put this piece into circulation, which aims to highlight the 35th Anniversary of the Erasmus Program.

To celebrate 35 years of the Erasmus programme, euro area finance ministers decided that euro area member states would mint a 2 euro commemorative coin using a common design on the national side. The public chose the winning design in an online vote . Voters had a choice of six designs, which had been selected by a professional jury following a design competition among the Member States of the euro area, and chose the design created by Joaquin Jimenez, a professional designer at the Monnaie de Paris.

The countries that will participate in this initiative will be the following: Belgium, Germany, Estonia, Ireland, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia and Finland.

The design of the coin is a mix of two main elements of the Erasmus program: the original intellectual inspiration, Erasmus himself, and the allegory of his influence in Europe. The first is symbolized by one of the best-known representations of Erasmus. The second is symbolized by a bundle of links running through the coin from one lighthouse to another, representing the numerous intellectual and human exchanges between European students.

As a reference to Europe, some of these links form other stars, born from the synergy between the countries. Figure 35, for the 35th anniversary, rises from the stars in a contemporary graphic style.

Countries that issue the common commemorative 2 euro coin 2022

As you have seen, the runs are also included, in general they are wide, but we have the exception of Malta, with only 82,500 coins it will be the most valued coin in the collection.

The currency will be issued in unison by all countries on July 1, 2022.

In 2022 we will not only have the common commemorative, each country can issue two more coins of this type, which according to the European Commission "must be dedicated to elements of great symbolism at the national or European level."

The year is advancing and with it the issuance of commemorative 2-euro coins scheduled for 2021 is being completed. Another of the coins that did not have an exact date for its putting into circulation has just been confirmed and at the same time a real image of it has been released. . I am referring to the commemorative 2 euro coin that Slovenia will issue on October 25, dedicated to the "Bicentennial of the first Museum of Slovenia" and designed by Lana Semečnik.

The central motif of the commemorative coin issued on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Regional Museum of Carniola, the first museum in Slovenia, are texts that represent moments in the museum's history in the form of various names that the institution has had in its 200 years of history.

In total there are a million pieces that are issued, distributed as follows: 991,000 in rolls for circulation, 2,500 in Proof quality presented in a capsule, 6,000 in BU quality within Euroset 2021 along with the rest of the circulation coins of the year in progress and, finally, 500 in Proof version within the euroset in this quality along with the rest of the 2021 circulation values.

We have a new country that officially joins the issuance of the common commemorative 2 euro coin of 2022 alluding to the "35th Anniversary of the Erasmus Program". It is Slovenia that has already submitted its design and the issue volume for this piece. The circulation will be the usual for the 2 euro commemorative coins issued by Slovenia, 1,000,000 pieces.

The design work of the general engraver of the Monnaie de Paris, Joaquín Jimenez, is a mixture of two main elements of the Erasmus program: the original intellectual inspiration, Erasmus himself, and the allegory of his influence in Europe. The first is symbolized by one of the best known representations of Erasmus.

The second is symbolized by a bundle of links that crosses the coin from one lighthouse to another, representing the numerous intellectual and human exchanges between European students.

As a reference to Europe, some of these links form other stars, born from the synergy between the countries. Figure 35, for the 35th anniversary, emerges from the stars in a contemporary graphic style.

The only difference between the coins issued by the different states lies in the name of the issuing country, in Slovenia there is the inscription SLOVENIJA.

If all goes according to plan, the coins of all the states will be issued jointly on July 1, 2022.

As usual, the Bank of Slovenia has the good habit of calling a design competition to select the image that will be represented on its commemorative 2-euro coin. I have just learned that the one that will be broadcast in 2022 to honor the "150th anniversary of the birth of the architect Jože Plečnik" has already chosen the design it will present. In addition to this one, I will also show you the other two finalist designs, so that you yourself can assess whether you have really chosen the best one.

In total, there were 29 proposals received by the Bank of Slovenia for this new commemorative 2-euro coin, the chosen one being a design presented by Andrej Žerovnik, who apart from seeing his work embodied in the coin, has obtained a prize of 3,000 euros; so double cause for satisfaction.

Let's now see the designs that were in second and third position, which have obtained a cash prize of 1,500 and 1,000 euros respectively.

Design by Gregor Ivanušič, who finished second.

Design by Danela Vidmar Podboj and Tomaž Podboj, who finished third.

Looking at the three designs, in my opinion, the best one has won, because the second and third I think they leave a lot to be desired. The design that the coin will present, considering that it is dedicated to an architect, seems quite correct to me, I would even say that I like it.

For now we do not know the volume or the date of issue. Based on previous years the run could be 1 million pieces.

My thanks to Paul (Euromunter) for the notice on this news.

The Bank of Slovenia announces the issuance of the 2 euro commemorative 2020 coin dedicated to the "500th anniversary of the birth of Adam Bohorič", for tomorrow, Wednesday 23 December. In total, there are a million pieces that are issued, distributed as follows: 990,500 in rolls for circulation, 2,000 in Proof quality presented in a capsule, 7,000 in BU quality within Euroset 2020 along with the rest of the circulation coins of the year in progress and, finally, 500 in Proof version within the euroset in this quality along with the rest of the 2020 circulation values.

At the heart of the design is a multilingual motto from the cover of Bohorič's Latin – Slovenian grammar entitled "Proste zimske urice". The Slovenian motto, written in the Bohoričica or Bohorič alphabet (a type of writing named after Adam Bohorič), easily recognizable by its characteristic letter "f", appears in the lower half
of the core of the coin. Inscribed on the back is its Latin version, representing Bohorič's contribution to the international academic sphere. At the top of the design, drawing a semicircle, is the inscription "ADAM BOHORIČ 1520 / SLOVENIJA 2020".
