As usual, the commemorative 2 euro coin issued by Slovenia is leaving us at the end of the year and the 2024 coin was not going to be an exception. We already have official information from the Bank of Slovenia about everything related to this coin that will be issued on the 18th of this month of December.

The coin commemorates the “250th Anniversary of the National and University Library of Slovenia”. The design of this new coin was the result of a design competition held for the occasion, in which the design submitted by Mojca Mlinar and Dominik Košak was chosen, for which they received a prize of 4,000 euros.

According to the authors, the coin depicts the slightly tilted door handle of the National and University Library with a Pegasus. Pegasus is a mythological winged creature shaped like a horse that symbolically guides visitors to the library into the world of knowledge.

The coin, which has a mintage volume of 1 million pieces, will be put into circulation on 18 December. The Euroset BU and the Euroset Proof, which include the commemorative coin, will be released at the same time.

Breakdown of the issue

– 990,250 in rolls of 25 coins
– 6,000 within the Euroset BU
– 3,000 in Proof quality individually
– 750 in Proof quality within the Euroset Proof

The National and University Library of Slovenia (Narodna in univerzitetna knjižnica, NUK) celebrates its 250th anniversary in 2024. This important milestone commemorates its fundamental role in preserving, disseminating and enriching Slovenia's cultural and academic heritage.

Founded in 1774, during the reform period of Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, the institution initially emerged as a public library in the context of the Habsburg Empire. Since its inception, its mission has been to collect, preserve and make available to the public the literary and intellectual treasures of the country.

The current library building, located in Ljubljana, is a masterpiece by architect Jože Plečnik, opened in 1941. This space not only houses millions of historical books and manuscripts, but is also an architectural icon symbolising the connection between knowledge and Slovenian cultural identity. Its design, marked by classical and modern elements, reflects Slovenia’s rich history and its vision for the future.

Today, the library not only serves students and scholars of the University of Ljubljana, but also acts as the country's main national archive. Its collection contains medieval manuscripts, incunabula and a vast collection of works documenting the evolution of Slovenian language and literature. Moreover, its digitalisation and online access are expanding the possibilities for research and knowledge preservation.

As it turns 250, NUK reaffirms its commitment to education, research and cultural preservation. Its history reflects not only the evolution of Slovenia as a nation, but also the universal importance of libraries as guardians of human knowledge.
