A commemorative coin with a face value of €20 was issued in Germany last September to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Erich Kästner, one of Germany's best-known writers and one of the most translated of the 20th century.

Erich Kaestner

Erich Kästner, born in 1899, grew up in a lower-middle-class family in Dresden-Neustadt. His mother struggled to ensure that her son rose in society and had access to a good education. In 1919, Kästner graduated from high school with honours and studied German language and literature, history, philosophy, journalism and drama in Leipzig. After earning his doctorate in 1925 and securing a post as an editor at the Neue Leipziger Zeitung, he moved to Berlin in 1927, where he experienced his great success and his “golden years” as a writer.

In 1933 he was banned from publishing in Germany and witnessed his works being burned during the book burning on Berlin's Opera Square in May 1933. He remained in Germany, however, and worked under a pseudonym in theatre and film, and in 1941 wrote the screenplay for the Ufa commemorative film "Münchhausen".

After the end of the war, when the aim was to create a new intellectual and cultural beginning, his creative energy reached a second peak. He was much in demand as a representative of a “different” Germany and, unlike many emigre authors, he was also in demand locally. In addition to his prolific literary activity, he supported the establishment of the International Youth Library in Munich and became increasingly politically active as a public figure, for example in campaigns against nuclear weapons. In the early 1960s, his creative energy waned, and he suffered from numerous physical, psychological and alcohol problems, forcing him to spend several months in a sanatorium.

Millions of children grew up with Erich Kästner's stories, but as a self-proclaimed "moralist" and "great-grandson of the German Enlightenment", he also wrote for adults, spanning a wide range of genres and media. He was awarded, among others, the Georg Büchner Prize, the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Hans Christian Andersen Medal, and received the German Film Award for the screenplay of the film "Das doppelte Lottchen".

The Coin

The obverse of the coin features a line portrait of Erich Kästner, showing the author's intelligence and positive attitude in the later years of his life. His name in capital letters crowns a decoratively arranged stack of books, with the topmost volume being his life story spanning from 1899 to 1974, followed by several of his best-known children's novels, emphasised by the use of colour, inspired by the palette of illustrator Walter Trier. Above the books are two children, representing the children's characters in Kästner's novels as well as his target audience.

The reverse of the coin features the stylized eagle of the German coat of arms, which is surrounded by the inscriptions of the name of the issuing country "BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND" (Federal Republic of Germany), the face value "20 EURO", the mint mark "D" (Bavaria), the twelve European stars, the year of issue "2024", and the metal and its purity "SILBER 925" (Silver 925).

The smooth edge of the coin is engraved with the inscription: «ES GIBT NICHTS GUTES / AUẞER: MAN TUT ES ●» («Nothing good happens unless you make it happen»).
