Today, December 10, the National Bank of Hungary, Magyar Nemzeti Bank (MNB), has issued the tenth coin in the series dedicated to Nobel Prize winners of Hungarian origin, started in 2012, this time dedicated to George Andrew Olah.
This new issue consists of two coins with the same design, a silver coin with a face value of 7,500 florins and a cupro-nickel version with a face value of 3,000 florins, which commemorate the 30th anniversary of the 1994 Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded to George Andrew Olah for his "results in the study of positively charged hydrocarbons."
George A. Olah was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1994 for his achievements in the study of positively charged hydrocarbons and his contributions to the field of carbocation chemistry. The significance of George Olah's discovery is that he was able to demonstrate the hitherto suspected existence of carbocations during experiments and was able to examine their properties.
His achievements in the field of carbocations and other electron-deficient particles provided a theoretical basis for new and more modern hydrocarbon chemical processes. His research on cations with special structures produced several practical benefits. As a result of his discovery, new types of unleaded gasoline were developed, with a higher octane rating than previously available; the methanol economy he developed is a viable alternative for greening the energy and transportation sectors, as well as the chemical industry.
In keeping with the thematic concept of the series, the central motif on the obverse of the coin is a three-dimensional model of a carbocation with a typical, stable structure, around which Olah's research focused. On the obverse are the obligatory design elements of collector coins: the inscription “MAGYARORSZÁG” (HUNGARY) of the issuing country; below the central motif, in two lines, the denomination “7500” or “3000” as well as the inscription “FORINT”; to the right, the year of issue “2024” and the mint mark “BP”.
The reverse of the coin depicts the scientist from the waist up, holding a piece of chalk, presenting the cyclical process that underpins the operation of the methanol industry. The chosen motif refers both to George Olah’s teaching activity and to the field of research in which he worked after winning the Nobel Prize; as a researcher, he earned the nickname “the father of the methanol industry”. To the left of the portrait, in two lines, appears the inscription “NOBEL-DÍJ 1994” (NOBEL PRIZE 1994) and to the right, along the edge, the inscription “OLÁH GYÖRGY”. At the bottom right is the mark of the coin’s designer, the sculptor Mihály Fritz.
