In 2023, the issue of the fifth and last commemorative 2 euro coin in the series “Lithuanian Ethnographic Regions”, dedicated to the “Region of Lithuania Minor” (Lithuania Minor, in English), was planned and officially announced by the Bank of Lithuania. For no known reason, the coin was cancelled and until today we have not heard anything officially about it.
The most likely (almost certain) reason for its cancellation is the controversy surrounding the recognition of Lithuania Minor as an ethnographic region of Lithuania due to its separate history, marked by Prussian and German influence, and because a large part of its territory belongs today to Russia (Kaliningrad Oblast). While some see it as a cultural and national reaffirmation, others consider that it could generate political and geographical tensions, given its historical and demographic status distinct from other traditional Lithuanian regions. (We will explain this in more detail at the end of the entry.)
Returning to the coin itself, it has been announced that it will be issued in the last quarter of 2025, with a mintage of 1 million coins, of which 10,000 will be presented in coincard form. With this mintage, this last coin in the series will have an issuance volume exactly double that of the other four.
The image of the coin you see above may be quite similar to the one issued, as the image of the region's coat of arms is usually used, and this one shows that of Minor Lithuania.
