The Government of Andorra has officially announced the two commemorative 2-euro coins that will be issued throughout 2025. As is customary in odd-numbered years, the minting is carried out by the Monnaie de Paris. This year, the chosen themes pay tribute to both Andorra's commitment to sport and the conservation of its biodiversity.

Coin dedicated to the Games of the Small States of Europe

The first coin is dedicated to the Games of Small European States (JSES) , which will be held in the Principality from 26 to 31 May 2025. This sporting competition brings together several European countries with small populations and promotes the Olympic spirit in a more accessible format.

 

The coin's core features various sporting elements, including balls from various sports, against a stylized background. All of these appear in a dynamic style that evokes movement and energy. The inscription " Jocs dels Petits Estats d'Europa " appears at the top, and the lower part reads " ANDORRA 2025. "

Coin dedicated to the Bearded Vulture

The second commemorative coin is dedicated to the Bearded Vulture (Gypaetus barbatus) , one of the most emblematic birds of the Andorran Pyrenees. This vulture species, recognizable by its dense plumage and hooked beak, is currently listed as endangered. With this issue, Andorra seeks to highlight the importance of its protection and conservation. 

 

The coin features a detailed portrait of the bearded vulture's head, facing right, with a plain background that highlights its imposing expression. Below the image appear the name of the country, " ANDORRA ," and the year " 2025 ," all framed by the silver ring with the twelve stars of the European Union.

Issue volume and technical characteristics

Both coins will be issued in a mintage of 60,000 units in BU quality.

The European Small States Games coin alone will have an additional 4,000 Proof quality coins , reaching a total of 64,000.

The broadcast dates have not yet been officially announced.

Centenary of Skiing in Andorra

 

In 1924, the first skier in Andorra, the postman Miquel Farré, replaced the snowshoes that he had until then used to deliver letters with long pieces of wood that allowed him to glide quickly. He got the idea from the inhabitants of the nearby French town of Porta, where he went weekly to pick up some of the mail. Other postmen in the Principality of Andorra began to imitate him, at the beginning of the popularization of skiing in Andorra.

These are two pieces in cupronickel in which two representative elements of the Principality of Andorra are shown. In one we see the San Antoni de la Grella Bridge and in the other a Capercaillie. The common face shows a stylized image of both the bridge and the bird, and the face value.

30 years of Andorra's entry into the UN

Andorra's entry into the UN took place on July 28, 1993. The Principality began its path with full sovereignty within the international sphere. The country became a rule of law, democratic and social, at the same time that it became another international actor. 

 

The design of the coin commemorates the 30th anniversary of the admission of the Principality of Andorra to the United Nations. The composition, in close-up, of the number 30 is represented by two symbolic elements: a crown of olive branches and a globe. In the upper part of the design appears the coat of arms of the country and the inscription ANDORRA MEMBRE DE LES NACIONS UNIDES (Andorra member of the United Nations).

Summer Solstice Fire Festivals

The summer solstice fire festivals were inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2015. They are traditional and popular festivals that are widely celebrated in Andorra every year. 

 

The coin design reproduces a human figure, called a “fallaire”, dressed in a traditional cape and drawing a circle of fire with the “falla”. This is the main element of the festival and consists of tree barks which, once ignited, are energetically spun creating large circles of fire. The graphic composition of lines at the bottom of the design represents the summer solstice together with the name of the issuing country “ANDORRA” and the year “2023”.

Completing the information

As in all odd years, the minting of the Andorran coins corresponds to the Monnaie de Paris. As for the broadcast dates, the announcement is the fourth quarter of 2023, but without specifying more.

Coins with face of 1.25 euros

These are two cupro-nickel pieces in which two representative elements of the Principality of Andorra are represented.

 

One represents a squirrel (squirol in Catalan) and the other presents the church of Sant Joan de Caselles, one of the churches that has best preserved its Romanesque origins. The building was built between the 11th and 12th centuries, and follows the characteristic architectural scheme of the Romanesque churches in Andorra: a rectangular nave with a wooden roof, a semicircular apse and a Lombard-style bell tower. It also preserves two porches from the XV and XVI centuries. Inside you can see the remains of a 12th-century Romanesque stucco majesty, and the altarpiece, from 1527, is of great artistic quality, with influences from the Italian and Germanic Renaissance.

10 years after the entry into force of the Monetary Agreement between Andorra and the European Union

 

 On June 30, 2011, the Principality of Andorra signed the Monetary Agreement with the European Union. This was deposited with the European Commission in Brussels on February 23, 2012 and entered into force on April 1, 2012.

The Monetary Agreement between the Principality of Andorra and the European Union recognizes the euro as the official currency of the Principality and grants the right to mint its own coins.

The Legend of Charlemagne

 

 Legend has it that Charlemagne founded Andorra in the year 805, in recognition of the help that its inhabitants gave him in the fight against the Saracens.

In the foreground is the reproduction of the Romanesque sculpture of Our Lady of Meritxell (patron saint of the Principality of Andorra), dating from the 11th and 12th centuries, it is a symbol of identity of the Andorran people and a source of passion for its inhabitants. On September 8, 1921 his coronation took place, since then, that day the national holiday of Andorra has been celebrated . In the background there is a partial reproduction of the sanctuary of the basilica where the carving is located, a graphic element that symbolizes a flower, the name of the issuing country "ANDORRA" and the years "1921-2021". The twelve stars of the European flag appear on the circular crown of the coin.

 

At the same time, the euroset has also been issued with the eight regular values ​​of circulation for the current year and two pieces in cupronickel in which two representative elements of the Principality of Andorra are shown. Here you have more information about these emissions.

In 2022 the Andorran coins will be minted in Spain by the Fabrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre - Real Casa de la Moneda. For now I do not know the reasons to which they will be dedicated.

In ancient times, the flower was highly appreciated in the cultural sphere, since it was closely linked to the world of Greek poetry and mythology, hence its Latin name: Narcissus poeticus.

The Virgin of Meritxell, Patron Saint of the Principality, is a symbol of identity of the Andorran people and a source of passion for its inhabitants. On September 8, 1921 his coronation took place, since then, that day the national holiday of Andorra has been celebrated.

The image that the coin presents corresponds to a carving of the Virgin located in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Meritxell, a basilica located in the town of Meritxell. Previous to the image (replica) that today presides over the church, there was another (original) carving of the Virgin of Meritxell, which was preserved in the old sanctuary of Santa María de Meritxell until its disappearance due to a fire in 1972.

The image that is currently venerated is a faithful reproduction of that Romanesque, which was considered one of the oldest specimens, and its date of completion was between the 11th and 12th centuries.

The Romanesque image was made of polychrome wood, 83 cm. tall, with a highly static and rustic expression. The Virgin wore a crown of five flowers on her head and a white veil under the crown, with ornate edges. In the small rear backrest, following the canon of Romanesque carvings of the time, there was a cavity surely destined for the custody of relics or other pieces. The Mother was dressed in a red tunic, decorated with flowers and stars, and a blue cloak that exposed her hands.

The reproduction that today fills the space in the temple is the work of the Andorran artist Jaume Rubia.

The volume of issue announced for this coin is 70,000 pieces, all of them in BU quality.

 

Under this name, the coin will be issued that aims to be a recognition to the elderly that such a bad thing has happened during the pandemic caused by Covid-19, both from a health point of view, and because of the social isolation they have suffered.

The design of the coin shows two joined hands, one of an elderly person, symbolizing the care we owe to our elders. The legend that accompanies the image is the same as the motif of the coin «Let's take care of our elders» in Catalan. We also see how the name of Andorra forms a kind of barrier in its upper part that does not allow the Covid-19 viruses to spread.

The dates of issue of any of the coins, which this year are minted by the Monnaie de Paris, have not been provided.

50 years of the Universal Female Suffrage

Half a century after this historical event, the issuance of this coin will remember this advance towards a more just society.

The design of the coin shows a female face surrounded by lines that mark an infinite movement. These lines are made up of female names in the Catalan language juxtaposed one to another, which makes it difficult to read them individually, as a tribute to the solidarity between women in the fight for their rights. Only one name is repeated, that of "VICTORIA", as a symbol of the victory that represents the conquest of the right to vote.

The design is completed by the inscriptions "50 ANYS DEL SUFRAGI UNIVERSAL FEMENÍ" (50 years of universal female suffrage) and "ANDORRA 1970-2020". These inscriptions are also incorporated into the movement of the lines to give more importance to the anniversary that is being commemorated.

XXVII Ibero-American Summit Andorra 2020

The XXVII Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State will be held in Andorra, if circumstances permit, in April 2021, under the slogan "Innovation for sustainable development - Goal 2030".

 

Andorra, the most recent and smallest member of the Ibero-American Conference, will host this meeting at the highest political level, in which 19 Latin American countries will participate, as well as Spain, Portugal and Andorra, to work towards common objectives such as the sustainable development.

The coin motif shows a tree made up of human silhouettes and jagged discs. Human silhouettes symbolize the integration of society, culture and education to realize a sustainable future. The jagged discs symbolize the energy of the movement between the ideas and proposals of the Summit participants.
Near the tree you can see the logo of the XXVII Summit. In its upper part, three triangles represent the colors of the Andorran flag. In its lower part, six triangles represent Andorra's openness towards the Sustainable Development Goals.

Surrounding the motif, you can read the inscription «XXVII CIMERA IBEROAMERICANA ANDORRA 2020» (XXVII CumbreIberoamericana Andorra 2020).

The Andorran Ministry of Finance together with the Servei d´Emissions of the Principality have issued a statement among currency distributors throughout Europe to announce the currency issues for this year 2020 and, at the same time, inform them that the dates that were handled initially for the emission of the different products they have been delayed to a date still to be determined due to the crisis caused by Covid-19.

Thanks to the aforementioned statement, to which I have had access, we have some information that we lacked to know, although everything that I have been advancing here on the reason for the two commemorative 2-euro coins, of which we have already confirmed, is confirmed. We know the exact emission volume for each of them and the qualities in which they will be emitted.

I remind you that the first to be broadcast will be dedicated to the "XXVII Ibero-American Summit Andorra 2020", an event scheduled for November 26 and that the Minister of Foreign Affairs reported a few days ago that the summit will not be held on the day scheduled with the presence in the Principality of the different leaders. At the end of June, it will be decided whether the meeting of Ibero-American heads of state and government will take place virtually on November 26 or if it will be postponed until spring 2021 to be carried out in person.

We already know the reason, the image and all the data of the first commemorative 2 euro coin that Andorra will issue in 2019. The chosen theme is «Finals of the Alpine Ski World Cup» competition held in Andorra from 11 to March 17 next. the 60,000 coins of which the issue consists will be put on sale coinciding with the start of the competition, both by the numismatic professionals, and through the merchandising points of sale of the organization of the Finals of the World Cup of Alpine skiing, at the price of 12.50 euros.

The design that shows the coin reproduces some snowflakes, a skier sliding down a track and the logo of the event. In addition, the portfolio in which the currency is presented has a certification hologram. Being an odd year the coin has been coined by the Monnaie de Paris, the even years is made by the Nacionakl Fabrica de Moneda y Timbre.

This week the two numismatic products with the date of the 2018 edition have been officially issued with which Andorra is updated. On the one hand we have the second commemorative 2-euro coin dedicated to the "70 years of the Declaration of Human Rights" and on the other the Euroset in BU quality with the eight regular circulation currencies of the current year.

The volume of issue is 75,000 coins, minted in Spain by the National Fabrica de Moneda y Timbre and presented as the one you see in the image above.

 

 

The design of the coin shows seven staircases (representing the seven parishes or administrative divisions of Andorra) in the form of mountains leading to the valley, in which are found the name of the issuing State «ANDORRA» and the year of issue «2018 » These stairs are, at the same time, the branches of a tree that symbolizes humanity, of which Andorra is an integral part. From the branches of the tree grow 30 leaves representing the 30 articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The inscription in Catalan "70 ANYS DE LA DECLARACIÓ UNIVERSAL DELS DRETS HUMANS" (70 years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights) surrounds the design, reinforcing its commemorative character.
