Portugal has issued a new commemorative coin dedicated to Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso, one of the leading figures of Portuguese modernism. The coin is part of the "Contemporary Portuguese Visual Artists" series and aims to reflect both the painter's personality and the dynamic, experimental nature of his artistic output.
The coin has a face value of 10 euros and was designed by the Portuguese artist and jeweler Teresa Milheiro. This issue is minted exclusively in 925 sterling silver, measures 40 millimeters in diameter, and features a proof finish with colored accents. Its mintage is limited to 3,000 pieces and it was issued this September.
Coin design
The obverse features a minimalist interpretation of Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso's face. His features are reduced to a stylized representation of an eye, nose, and mouth, distributed across the central surface of the coin.
Around the portrait is a blue ring bearing the name of Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso, accompanied by the dates "1887-1918", the national coat of arms of Portugal and the face value of 10 euros.
On this same side, one can read the statement "eu não sigo escola alguma," which translates as "I don't follow any school." The inscription summarizes the painter's creative independence and his refusal to be confined to a single artistic movement.

The reverse of the coin features eight human figures captured in different poses. The silhouettes convey a sense of continuous movement and reflect the dynamism and freedom present in the artist's work.
On the left side of the design appear the name of the author, Teresa Milheiro, the identification of the Casa da Moeda, the year of issue " 2026" and the legend "Portuguese Republic".
The overall design of the coin is inspired by Souza-Cardoso's well-known statement, " Tenho mais fases que a lua," translated as "I have more phases than the moon." The phrase expresses the multiplicity of languages, influences, and stages that characterized his brief but intense artistic career.
