The tale of Rapunzel, popularized by the Brothers Grimm, has once again become a collector's item. This time, it appears on a two-ounce silver coin that combines high relief, color, and selective gilding to make the protagonist's long hair the true focal point of the design.

The coin, titled Golden Story, is part of the Love Stories series. It was developed by the Lithuanian Mint, though it is not a Lithuanian issue: it is issued in the name of Liberia, has a face value of $25, and is limited to a mintage of 500.

Hair as a link between the protagonists

The reverse depicts the most recognizable scene from the tale. The young woman appears leaning out of the window of a tall tower covered in roses, while the prince tries to reach her from below. Between them stretches the protagonist's hair, selectively gilded and transformed into a visual bridge between confinement and freedom.

The hair forms a wide diagonal line that directs the gaze from the top of the tower to the figure at its base. This solution allows for the creation of a particularly complex scene without any of its secondary elements—the vegetation, the architecture, the mountains, or the night sky—detracting from the prominence of the two figures.

Digital printing adds color to the figures, roses, lanterns, and landscape, while the antique finish darkens the exposed silver areas. The contrast between these aged tones, the color, and the warm sheen of the hair makes the main motif stand out immediately.

A scene with narrative depth

The relief is not used solely to increase the volume of the figures. It also allows for the separation of the different planes of the narrative: the princess occupies the upper level; the tower and vegetation form the middle plane; and the prince appears in the foreground. In this way, the small space of the coin acquires a depth close to that of a small sculptural illustration.

Roses, vines, and small architectural elements are scattered around the main scene, reinforcing the romantic and fantastical character of the composition. The application of color is broad enough to recreate the atmosphere of the fairy tale, yet numerous areas of aged silver are left visible, preventing the piece from completely losing its metallic appearance.

An obverse that opens the book of great romances

The obverse abandons the tower scene and places an open book in the center. This element serves as the symbolic origin of the story and links the coin to the tradition of classical tales and stories.

The book appears surrounded by roses and plant motifs, while the legend GREATEST ROMANCES runs across the top. The rest of the field contains inscriptions for the issuing country, the face value of 25 dollars, the silver standard, and the year 2026.

Two ounces of silver and several techniques combined

The Golden Story coin is made of 62.2 grams of 999 fine silver and has a diameter of 45 millimeters. The considerable weight of the metal provides enough material to create the varying heights of the relief without excessively increasing the coin's diameter.

The coin incorporates several techniques that are defining much of contemporary numismatics: high relief, antique finish, digital printing, and selective gilding.
