The Royal Mint is celebrating the 60th anniversary of Star Trek in 2026 with a new British 50p coin featuring one of the franchise's most recognizable gestures: the Vulcan salute. The issue, titled Live Long and Prosper, is the first of two official coins announced by the institution to commemorate these six decades of space adventures.

The piece is offered in four versions: Brilliant Uncirculated cupronickel, colored cupronickel, colored Proof silver, and Proof gold. All share the same design, although the application of color in two of them transforms the background into a galactic scene dominated by blue and violet tones.

The collection created by The Royal Mint to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Star Trek will consist of two British 50p coins.

 

Each one focuses on a distinctive element of the franchise: the first recovers one of its most recognizable gestures, while the second will pay homage to some of the ships that have accompanied its different generations.

Design: Live Long & Prosper

The reverse side features a hand giving the Vulcan salute, rendered with meticulous detail that reveals the creases and lines of the palm. In the upper right corner appears the Star Trek logo accompanied by the number "60," the zero of which incorporates the familiar Starfleet insignia.

The design is completed with the inscription “LIVE LONG & PROSPER”, arranged in three lines and slightly slanted. In the colored versions, all these elements are set against a galactic background in shades of violet and blue, dotted with stars and nebulae.

 

The common obverse features a portrait of King Charles III created by the British sculptor Martin Jennings. Around the bust are the monarch's name, the abbreviations of his titles, the face value of 50 pence, and the year of issue, “2026”.

Cupronickel currency – UNC 

 

The simplest version features the design without color application and is delivered inside an illustrated card with information about the anniversary and history of Star Trek.

This second version retains the same characteristics as the first, but adds color to the reverse side. The purple, blue, and black tones recreate a space nebula, while the hand, logo, and inscriptions retain their metallic finish. This colored version is sold exclusively through The Royal Mint.

Silver coin – Proof 

 

The sterling silver edition features a Proof finish and also uses color printing to highlight the galactic background. The Vulcan hand and inscriptions contrast with the intensity of the blues and violets, while the polished and matte surfaces characteristic of this quality enhance the metallic elements.

The most valuable variant is minted in 22-karat gold made entirely from recycled material. Unlike the colored versions, its design features only the contrasts of the Proof finish, allowing the relief of the Vulcan salute and the inscriptions to stand out against the polished fields.
