Ireland has issued a commemorative 2 euro coin dedicated to the 50th anniversary of U2 today, September 25, 2026, by the Central Bank of Ireland. It features the four members of the band on the national side and is marketed in two versions for collectors: BU in a coincard and Proof in a booklet-style presentation wallet.

The issue commemorates the band's formation in Dublin in 1976. The design, by Shaughn McGrath and developed in collaboration with U2, accompanies a mintage of 150,000 BU (Brilliant Uncirculated) pieces and 5,000 Proof pieces. Both were minted by the Royal Netherlands Mint.

The design: four musicians and fifty years of history

The national side of the coin features the name U2 and portraits of its four members, from left to right: Adam Clayton, Bono, The Edge, and Larry Mullen Jr. Above the portraits is the inscription "50th Anniversary ." Also appearing are "Éire," the Irish word for Ireland, and the year 2026; the twelve stars of the European Union surround the design.

The choice of a group portrait reinforces the central idea of ​​the issue: to celebrate the long career of the quartet formed by Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr. The common side retains the usual design of the €2 coins, with the face value and a map of Europe. According to Collector Coins, Shaughn McGrath prepared the design in collaboration with the band.

The Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) edition comes on a collector's card. The front of the coincard features a color photograph of the four members and an inscription commemorating the 50th anniversary.
