Estonia has issued a new 15 euro silver collector coin today, September 22, 2026, dedicated to the Forest Brothers, the men and women who maintained armed resistance against the Soviet occupation during the 1940s and 1950s. 

The issue coincides with Estonia's Resistance Day and comes in a particularly limited mintage: only 2,500 pieces have been struck. Its initial price is €124, and it is the second installment in a series with which the Bank of Estonia commemorates those who defended the country's independence during the years of occupation.

A scene constructed with trees, shadows, and light

 

 

The reverse side depicts several members of the resistance hidden at the edge of the forest. The tree trunks, arranged in a marked vertical rhythm, serve not only a scenic function: they form a symbolic boundary between the occupied territory and the space of freedom that the Brothers of the Forest sought to preserve.

The forest thus appears with a dual meaning. It was a refuge and protection, but also isolation. A band of light breaks through the trees, alluding to the memory of a free Estonia and the hope of one day regaining its independence. Also featured on this side are the Estonian name of the movement, METSAVENDLUS, and the face value of 15 euros.

 

The obverse features the Estonian coat of arms, accompanied by oak branches and a wooded silhouette that visually extends the main motif. The inscription EESTI VABARIIK and the year 2026 complete the design.

The Brothers of the Forest, a resistance movement born among the people

The name Forest Brothers identifies the fighters who took refuge in the forested areas of Estonia and other Baltic territories to confront Soviet power. Thousands of them were active in the Estonian forests during the 1940s and 1950s.

These weren't just experienced soldiers. Many were ordinary citizens who had left their homes and were living clandestinely. This human dimension explains why the coin doesn't depict a battle scene, but rather figures that remain hidden and a distant light transformed into a symbol of hope.

The second coin in a series that will reach 2 euros

This coin is the second in the Bank of Estonia's "Resistance" series. The program began in October 2025 with a silver coin dedicated to the so-called Finnish Boys, Estonian volunteers who fought with the Finnish forces against the Soviet Union during World War II.

That first coin shared the same face value of 15 euros, 925 sterling silver, weight, diameter, proof finish, and designer as the new one, but it had a mintage of 4,000 pieces. The Brothers of the Forest issue reduces that number to 2,500 units, making it the most limited release in the program to date.

The series will also have a continuation of particular interest to euro collectors: in 2027 Estonia will issue a commemorative €2 coin dedicated to the veterans of its Defense Forces. The theme of resistance will thus move from silver collector's items to a coin intended for circulation.

A Kaupo Kangro design minted in Lithuania

The winning design in the competition organized by the Bank of Estonia was the work of Kaupo Kangro. His main focus is architectural design, although he has also participated in various numismatic competitions and is the designer of several Estonian silver coins and 2-euro coins.

The coins were manufactured by the Lithuanian Mint. The 2,500 pieces were minted in 925 sterling silver, weighing 28.28 grams, with a diameter of 38.61 millimeters and a proof finish.
