The Central Bank of Chile has introduced a new commemorative 100-peso coin to celebrate its centennial. Under the slogan "One coin, one hundred years of history ," this special coin will begin circulating on July 21st , remaining a legal tender alongside previous versions of the coin of the same value.

The design, while maintaining the dimensions and physical characteristics of the current Chilean $100 bimetallic coin, introduces a revised obverse that highlights the Central Bank's centennial logo and symbolic elements such as the Andes Mountains.

A century of economic history

Founded in 1925, the Central Bank of Chile was created in a context of urgent need for monetary modernization and stability, following decades of financial instability. Inspired by European and North American models, its objective was to consolidate monetary policy, control the issuance of money, and act as a lender of last resort. Its creation marked a turning point in the Chilean economy, laying the foundations for solid and autonomous financial institutions.

Throughout its history, the Bank has faced significant challenges, such as periods of high inflation, external crises, and political transitions, consolidating over time its constitutional autonomy and its mission focused on maintaining price stability and the normal functioning of domestic and external payments.

A symbolic piece, but for everyday use

The commemorative coin has a face value of 100 Chilean pesos and is designed for regular circulation. It will not replace the current currency, but rather complement it. The Central Bank has announced that 30 million units will be issued , which will be distributed through commercial banks and general retailers.

The obverse of the coin features the centennial logo and the inscription "CIEN años" (One Hundred Years), framed by the phrases "REPÚBLICA DE CHILE" and "BANCO CENTRAL DE CHILE 1925–2025." A representation of the Andes Mountains and the Mint symbol complete the design.

The reverse retains traditional elements: the National Shield, the year of issue (2025), the number “100” and the word “PESOS”, accompanied by laurel branches, a classic symbol of victory and permanence.

A currency meant to be used

During the presentation, the president of the Central Bank, Rosanna Costa , highlighted the symbolic and everyday nature of this coin: "This coin will be part of people's daily exchanges, and it will also serve as a reminder that the Bank has been building trust and economic stability for a hundred years."

For her part, Treasurer Manager Cecilia Feliú emphasized that no special steps will be necessary to obtain it: "It will naturally reach the public when they use cash in their daily transactions."

With this special issue, the Central Bank of Chile not only celebrates its centennial but also brings its history and mission closer to the daily lives of millions of people. A small piece, but with great symbolic value.
