Ireland has unveiled a new commemorative €2 coin to celebrate one of the major European events of 2026: its Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The coin was officially presented today, July 6, and will enter circulation on Tuesday, July 7, with a mintage of 500,000 pieces intended for circulation throughout Ireland and, presumably, the rest of the Eurozone.

The issuance coincides with the start of the eighth semester in which Ireland holds the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The country will exercise this responsibility between July 1 and December 31, 2026, thirteen years after its previous Presidency, held in 2013.

This is not, therefore, a coin designed solely for albums or display cases. Ireland wanted to transfer the symbol of its Presidency to a piece of everyday circulation, using the euro as a small symbol of institutional representation and European identity.

A European symbol turned into currency

The design reproduces the official emblem of the Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2026. Instead of using a monument, a historical figure, or a figurative scene, the central composition is organized by means of a large spiral formed by dozens of small relief discs.

Each arm of the spiral incorporates 27 discs, representing the 27 member states of the European Union. The empty space in the center forms a five-pointed star, a clear reference to one of the symbols on the European flag.

The result is a design very different from those usually seen on commemorative €2 coins. The image doesn't tell a specific story through a recognizable scene, but rather presents an idea: different countries, with their own histories and identities, connected within a common structure.

The spiral conveys movement, cooperation, and continuity. It also allows the design to maintain a strong Irish personality without resorting to one of the most predictable national symbols. It's a European coin, but interpreted from an Irish perspective.

From Birr's sky to the visual identity of the Presidency

The inspiration for the spiral has a particularly interesting origin. The emblem of the Presidency takes as its reference the spiral structure of a nebula, first identified in Ireland during the 1840s by the Great Telescope at Birr Castle, built by William Parsons, the third Earl of Rosse.

That instrument was one of the great astronomical landmarks of its time and made Birr a prominent place in the history of sky observation. The choice of this landmark connects the coin to a lesser-known, but very significant, facet of Irish scientific history.

But the design is not limited to an astronomical evocation. The Presidency's visual identity also draws inspiration from Irish sculptural tradition and its connection to ancient symbols of the country, reinterpreted through a contemporary language.

On the coin, this blend works particularly well. The relief appears modern and dynamic, yet at the same time retains an almost handcrafted feel. The spiral can evoke a galaxy, an ancient root motif, a plant structure, or a flowing stream.

The eighth Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union

Ireland assumed the Presidency of the Council of the European Union on July 1, 2026. It is the eighth time the country has held this role since joining the then European Communities.

It is worth remembering that the Presidency of the Council of the European Union does not entail leading Europe or holding a position equivalent to that of President of the European Commission or the European Council. Its role is to organize, coordinate, and lead the work of the Council, the institution where the ministers of the Member States meet to discuss, negotiate, and adopt European legislation, for a period of six months.

During this semester, Ireland will have to chair meetings, facilitate agreements between member states, represent the Council in negotiations with the European Parliament and the Commission, and maintain the continuity of legislative work in numerous areas.

The Irish Presidency is presented under the Gaelic motto “Ní neart go cur le chéile” , an expression that can be translated as “strength comes from unity”. The phrase aptly summarizes the idea conveyed on the coin: the European Union as a collective construction, formed by different states but united by common goals.

The priorities announced by Ireland for this semester revolve around three main pillars: competitiveness, values, and security. The use of Irish in the motto also takes on special significance, as this will be the first Irish Presidency since Gaelic became a fully functioning working language of the European Union in 2022.

A rare find in circulation

The Central Bank of Ireland has confirmed a mintage of 500,000 coins intended for circulation. This means they will not be reserved exclusively for collectors nor sold only in a special presentation.

The figure is moderate compared to the usual volumes from some major eurozone countries, but sufficient for the coin to appear in daily trading. Spanish collectors should pay particular attention to exchanges, European dealers, and coin lots originating from Ireland in the coming months.

In addition to the version intended for circulation, the coin will have a Proof version, which the Central Bank of Ireland plans to release in mid-July. At present, official information does not detail the price, final presentation, or mintage of this collector's version.

The difference between the two issues will be significant. The circulation coin is intended to become an everyday memento of the Irish Presidency, while the Proof set will be aimed at those seeking superior numismatic preservation and an official presentation.

Born in 1775 to a wealthy family in Kerry, Daniel O'Connell had limited access to a good education as a Catholic due to the Penal Laws. His uncle sent him to a local school and later to France to complete his studies. He later fled to England to escape the violence of the French Revolution and study law, before returning to Ireland to complete his studies.

The French Revolution inspired the Irish people to begin their own revolutionary movement. However, after witnessing the violence in France, O'Connell believed in achieving greater freedom through more peaceful means. Following the rebellion of 1798, Great Britain passed the Act of Union in 1801, which abolished the Irish Parliament. Due to the continued existence of the Penal Laws, Irish Catholics could not be members of Parliament in London.

O'Connell, while practicing law, plotted the repeal of the Act of Union. In 1823, he helped found the Catholic Association to demand Catholic Emancipation. He won the Clare by-election in 1828 by a landslide, but, as a Catholic, was unable to take his seat.

Fearing another rebellion, the British government granted Catholic Emancipation in 1829. O'Connell was able to take his seat and became known as The Liberator for having "liberated" Irish Catholics from the Penal Laws.

To commemorate the centenary of the Nobel Prize in Literature awarded to the celebrated Irish author George Bernard Shaw, the Central Bank of Ireland is launching a commemorative silver coin with a face value of 15 euros and minted in Proof quality.

Born in Dublin in 1856, Shaw moved to London at age 20 and lived with his mother and sister with the intention of becoming a writer. As a child, he spent many hours wandering the halls of the National Gallery of Ireland, exploring the collection. The training in artistic style and art history he received through these visits aided him in his later work as an art critic, and the influence of this interest in art can also be seen in his plays. Initially, Shaw wrote five novels. While they were not successful, he managed to earn an income as an art critic.

His persistence eventually paid off with several successful plays, in which Shaw used his artistry and his newly acquired public recognition to express his unconventional and sometimes controversial views. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1925 for his work, marked by idealism and humanity, whose stimulating satire is often imbued with a unique poetic beauty. Shaw's Pygmalion was adapted into a film, and his screenplay earned him an Academy Award. It was later adapted into the popular Broadway musical My Fair Lady. As of 2016, Shaw was the only person to win both a Nobel Prize and an Academy Award.

George Bernard Shaw died in 1950, leaving behind a legacy as one of the greatest writers of all time, with countless essays, five novels, and more than 50 plays.

The reverse of the coin features a profile of George Bernard Shaw next to an open book with his own handwritten signature and a laurel branch. To commemorate the 1,500th anniversary of the death of Saint Brigid, the Bank of Ireland has issued a 15 euro silver coin in honour of this Swedish nun and theologian who was declared a saint by the Catholic Church in 1391.

Although one tradition says she was born in Louth, St Brigid has particularly strong ties to County Kildare. Her father is said to have been a chieftain and her mother a slave, and when she entered her teens, she decided to become a nun and use her faith to help others.

Around 480 AD, Brigid founded a monastery, the first of its kind in Ireland, which accommodated both men and women. The monastery was built next to a giant oak tree and the area became known as Cill Dara, meaning ‘oak church’. Since then, the oak leaf and St Brigid’s cross have become symbols associated with County Kildare.

Many stories and myths surround St Brigid, but they all highlight her values: her dedication to helping the poor, her fight for peace and a more just world, and in particular her challenge to the traditional view of the role of women in society. Her life inspired many religious monks and scholars to leave Ireland during the Middle Ages and promote her values ​​throughout Britain and Europe, to the point that she was sometimes more famous than St Patrick.

A new coin has just been issued in Ireland to commemorate the “100 years since the establishment of the Irish Defence Forces”. It is a silver coin with a face value of 15 euros and a limited mintage of 2,000 pieces.

1 October 2024 marks the 100th anniversary of the official establishment of the Irish Defence Forces (Óglaigh na hÉireann). Tracing its origins to the Irish Volunteers raised in 1913, the National Army was formed in early 1922 following the split of the IRA over the Anglo-Irish Treaty. Initially operating within a loose legal framework due to the exigencies of the Civil War, the new Irish Free State granted Óglaigh na hÉireann formal legal status as a democratically created and maintained army through the Defence Forces Temporary Provisions Act. This Act was proposed by the Minister for Defence, General Richard Mulcahy, and signed into law in August 1923. As set out in Section 22 of this Act, Óglaigh na hÉireann was officially designated the Defence Forces on 1 October 1924. This was one of the most important milestones in the establishment of a functioning democratic state. One hundred years later, the Defence Forces, consisting of the Army, the Naval Service and the Air Corps, continue to serve Ireland at home and abroad.

The reverse of the coin features the official emblem of the Defence Forces, common to all the forces, in the centre. The upper semicircle bears the legend, in English and Irish, “IRISH DEFENCE FORCES”. The lower part bears the face value, “15 EURO”.

To celebrate 35 years of the Erasmus programme, euro area finance ministers decided that euro area member states would mint a 2 euro commemorative coin using a common design on the national side. The public chose the winning design in an online vote . Voters had a choice of six designs, which had been selected by a professional jury following a design competition among the Member States of the euro area, and chose the design created by Joaquin Jimenez, a professional designer at the Monnaie de Paris.

The countries that will participate in this initiative will be the following: Belgium, Germany, Estonia, Ireland, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia and Finland.

The design of the coin is a mix of two main elements of the Erasmus program: the original intellectual inspiration, Erasmus himself, and the allegory of his influence in Europe. The Central Bank of Ireland, almost on par with Halloween, has issued a coin that pays homage to the life of Abraham Stoker, popularly known as Bram Stoker and his most famous work, Dracula. Published in 1897, it is considered the most influential horror novel of all time, it became known worldwide after its adaptation to the cinema in an American film starring Bela Lugosi in 1931. 

 

This edition coin limited to 3,000 units, with a facial of 15 euros, minted on 925 silver and Proof finish, was designed by David Rooney and is based on the artist's fascination with the character. His earliest influences were American comics with vampires and their disturbing content, still today is influenced by the horror genre present in literature and film. In the words of the designer, "The representation of Dracula in the design of the coin echoes the film representation of Nosferatu and the posters of Hammer Horror films of the sixties. He was eager to play with the scale of the figure looming behind the castle illuminated by the moon."

Bram Stoker was born in Clontarf, Dublin in 1847 and his interest in telling stories probably began in childhood. Stoker was a sickly child, who spent a lot of time in bed, his mother entertained him with many stories and legends, which included supernatural tales and accounts of deaths and illnesses.

To date, more than 1,000 novels and 200 films have been made about the most famous vampire, Count Dracula, which makes him the literary character most often represented in the history of cinema. 

The Glasnevin cemetery provided an appropriate backdrop for the official presentation, where the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank, Sharon Donnery, presented the commemorative coin to the Minister of Finance and Public Expenditure and Reformation Pascual Donohoe. Coin designer David Rooney also received a coin at the event along with members of the Stoker family.

Lieutenant Governor Sharon Donnery said: "The Central Bank is delighted to commemorate a renowned Irish author like Bram Stoker with this silver coin. "Bram Stoker created one of the most emblematic characters of all literature and cinema, and it is right that we honor him with this coin, which represents the figure of Dracula who looks out from behind his castle illuminated by the moon in Transylvania." 

The Proof quality coin is presented in a box with its certificate of authenticity. This limited edition commemorative coin has been minted in 925 sterling silver and is limited to 3,000 pieces. The diameter of the coin is 38.61 mm and it weighs 28.28 g. The sale price to which he has left in Ireland is € 60.

I am going to present to you the design of the commemorative 2 euro coin that Ireland will issue in 2019 at the "Centennial of the first session of Dáil Éireann", celebrated on January 21, 1919 at the Mansion House located on Dawson street in Dublin . The Dáil Éireann, which is how the Irish Parliament is known, proclaimed the independence of Ireland on the same day it met for the first time, this fact and the serious incidents that occurred on the same day led to the start of the Irish War of Independence. 

The design of the coin represents the first session of the Dáil Éireann in its Round Room. The Irish government began its journey on January 21, with a first meeting conducted entirely in Irish language, to mark the symbolic nature of the meeting. The design of this coin commemorates this event. The great "Room of the Pound" of the House House arches over the vast congregation of people chosen for the first time in the Dáil and the words "1919 An Chéad Dáil" (1919 First Dáil, in Irish language) appear written in traditional letters . The composition is completed by the name of the issuing country Eire (Ireland) and the year of issue of the currency, 2019.

The expected issue volume is 1,000,000 coins, on an unspecified date, although possibly at the beginning of the year.
