The Monnaie de Paris has unveiled its new coins dedicated to the Year of the Goat, which in 2027 will succeed the Year of the Horse in the annual series based on the Chinese calendar. The collection maintains the aesthetic used in previous issues and incorporates some of the key attributes traditionally associated with this sign.

In Chinese culture, the Goat represents gentleness, sensitivity, and creativity. People born under its influence are often described as calm, kind, and especially drawn to harmony and beauty. This animal occupies the eighth position in the sequence formed by the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.

The origin of this tradition lies in the Chinese calendar, a lunisolar system whose months begin with the new moon. To keep it synchronized with the solar year, intercalary months are incorporated in certain years, according to various astronomical calculations. This structure, used for over two millennia, continues to mark numerous traditional celebrations today.

Common design

On the center of the obverse, a goat is depicted passing through a ring decorated with traditional Chinese motifs. Next to the animal is the Chinese character "羊," associated with the Goat in the Chinese zodiac. The composition is completed by the year "2027" and the French inscription "ANNÉE DE LA CHÈVRE" —Year of the Goat—, arranged around the design.

The detailed treatment of the fur, horns, and ornamental elements of the ring adds depth to the composition.

The reverse side depicts the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac arranged on a screen surrounding the door of a traditional temple. The composition represents the complete cycle developed by this series between 2018 and 2029.

The face value appears in the upper left corner, while the initials "RF," for French Republic, are above the door. The inscription "CALENDRIER CHINOIS" can be read on a diagonal band.
