A curly-haired shepherd, a guardian whose fur falls in long cords, and a greyhound at full gallop. These are some of the protagonists of a series of seven coins that portrays dogs and showcases their work: herding flocks, protecting livestock, or participating in hunts. This collection, created in Hungary, now includes a new issue.

The latest addition is the Pumi, a curly-haired sheepdog with ears that curl forward. Its new 5,000-forint coin was issued by the National Bank of Hungary on October 4, 2026, coinciding with World Animal Day. This new coin invites visitors to explore the collection of dogs that began in 2019.

A new installment that raises the price to 5,000 forints

The 2026 Hungarian Pumi coin is the seventh installment in the "Hungarian Sheepdog and Hunting Breeds" series from the Magyar Nemzeti Bank. Designed by Boglárka Imrei and minted by the Hungarian Mint, it has a maximum mintage of 20,000 pieces and a proof-like finish.

The pumi introduces a change compared to the latest issues in this collection: the face value increases from 3,000 to 5,000 forints. The first four coins were issued with a face value of 2,000 forints, while the 2023 Transylvanian Hound and the 2025 Kuvasz had a face value of 3,000.

The new piece retains the series' format: 34 mm in diameter, 16 g in weight, and made of a copper, nickel, and zinc alloy. It also maintains its visual design: a portrait of the breed on the obverse and a scene related to its work on the reverse. This allows the collection to identify each dog and discover the role it plays.

The pumi: the curly-haired Hungarian shepherd dog

The Pumi is one of the nine native dog breeds of Hungary. Its origins date back to the 17th and 18th centuries, resulting from crosses between the Puli and German and French terrier-type dogs. According to the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) standard, it was officially recognized as a distinct breed at the beginning of the 20th century.

Its light, muscular build, elongated muzzle, wavy, curly coat , and erect ears with tips folded forward create a recognizable silhouette. It is an attentive, energetic dog, capable of herding animals much larger than itself. This combination of intelligence, speed, and courage explains its connection to herding and its aptitude for canine sports.

Obverse: a portrait highlighting the fur and ears

The obverse shows a pumi facing forward, with the head and upper body occupying a large part of the surface. The relief depicts the curls of its fur and the shape of its ears, two of its most distinctive features.

At the top appears the inscription "MAGYARORSZÁG", the Hungarian name for Hungary. To the right of the animal are distributed in four lines the face value "5000", the word "FORINT", the year "2026" and the mint mark "BP.", corresponding to Budapest.

The reverse depicts a full-bodied pumi in the foreground, standing vigilantly on a grassy field. In the background, another pumi leads a flock of Racka sheep. The scene links the breed to traditional Hungarian shepherding.

The inscription "PUMI" occupies the top portion. The designer's brand, Boglárka Imrei, is integrated into the lower right area of the scene.
