Some coins commemorate a date, while others transport us back to a specific moment. Germany's new commemorative €2 coin for 2027 evokes a September night in 1989: thousands of people waiting for news from a balcony, an announcement drowned out by shouts of joy.
The coin features Hans-Dietrich Genscher, one of the leading figures in German diplomacy. The Federal Ministry of Finance has unveiled the design, and its issuance was approved by the government on October 7. It is scheduled to be released on March 18, 2027, just three days before the centenary of his birth.
The coin continues the "Unity, Justice and Liberty" series and will have a mintage of up to 30 million coins. A tribute designed to travel from hand to hand.
The coin retains the usual characteristics of the 2 euro coin and will be legal tender throughout the eurozone. Its commemorative design changes the national side, but it retains its function as a circulating coin.
The third installment of "Unity, Justice and Freedom"
The series began in 2025 with the 35th anniversary of German reunification and continued in 2026 with Konrad Adenauer, the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic. Genscher will be featured in the third installment. Thus, the collection shifts from the anniversary of reunification to the individuals who contributed to building modern Germany.
For those collecting German coins by mint, there's another detail to look for: the five mint marks A, D, F, G, and J. These correspond to Berlin, Munich, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, and Hamburg, respectively. The announced mintage of up to 30 million coins refers to the entire issue, not to each of the five mints.
