A blimp flies over a Victorian-looking city while, skimming the water, a submarine approaches a dock. Clues appear among the buildings and machinery, inviting further observation. This scene is featured on Canada's 2026 silver coin, "A Whimsical Tale: Blimp," the second installment in a series that began in 2025 with a steam locomotive.

The two episodes offer a journey through a world built on memories of the Industrial Revolution and the freedoms of science fiction. To fully appreciate it, it's helpful to understand both the vehicles that inspired their designs and the stories that transformed those machines into symbols of adventure.

A future imagined with the machines of the past

The word steampunk serves to identify this visual language: visible mechanisms, gears, antique-looking metals, and extraordinary artifacts. Its appeal lies in imagining what other forms technology might have taken if the 19th-century industrial world had followed different paths.

A train station can become the entrance to an impossible city; an aircraft, a ship suspended among the clouds. The familiarity of its components makes the scene believable for a moment, even though the combination belongs to the realm of fantasy. This tension between the recognizable and the impossible explains much of the charm of these coins.

This movement has also reached museums. The Oxford Science History Museum dedicated an exhibition to it between October 2009 and February 2010, featuring works by 18 artists. The relationship between art, invention, and historical objects provides a particularly suitable framework for approaching this Canadian series.

2025: the journey begins at a station

The reverse side of David Oram 's "A Whimsical Tale: Steam Locomotive" depicts a train set against a backdrop of towers and ornate facades. An airship appears in the sky. The artist started with a generic 19th-century locomotive and transformed its form to fit this setting.

The choice of the railway is significant. During the 19th century, railways brought cities closer together, reorganized trade, and gave a new dimension to travel. The opening of the line between Liverpool and Manchester in 1830, designed to transport both passengers and goods, is one of the milestones that helps us understand that transformation, as the Science and Industry Museum reminds us.

On the coin, that historical experience becomes an invitation to imagine the train's future. The station functions as a threshold: looking at the piece makes one wonder what lies beyond its buildings and how far the tracks will extend. The design opens a story that each observer can continue.

2026: Adventure soars above the city

In the second installment, Joel Kimmel shifts the focus to the sky and water. Beneath the airship, a submarine and a boardwalk appear. In the background, a locomotive crosses a bridge: this is the connection to the first coin that identifies the mint itself.

Viewing both pieces together allows us to play with their scales. First, we can follow the ground journey; then, imagine the view from the aircraft. This change of perspective expands the narrative space and gives meaning to the series' continuity: each vehicle offers a different way to explore the city.

The abundance of elements demands careful observation. It's best to explore the scene in sections and then return to the whole. In this process, the focus shifts from recognizing a main protagonist to discovering how the smaller figures, the vehicles, and the architecture relate to one another.

Jules Verne and H.G. Wells among the details

The mint confirms two literary references on the reverse of 2026: the tentacles next to the submarine and an armed diver refer to Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea; an extraterrestrial machine located on the left alludes to The War of the Worlds.

Jules Verne's novel was published in installments between 1869 and 1870, as documented by the National Library of France. The Nautilus, commanded by Captain Nemo, transforms the ocean into a territory of exploration. The machine allows access to a world that its travelers could scarcely imagine from the surface.

In H.G. Wells's * The War of the Worlds*, published as a book in 1898, technological superiority takes on a threatening character. The coexistence of these two allusions allows us to interpret the coin as a convergence of two aspects of science fiction: the fascination with discovery and the fear of that which surpasses our capacity for control.

The obverse and characteristics of the two issues

The obverse features a portrait of Charles III by Steven Rosati, set against a background of gears. This element extends the industrial theme when the coin is tilted.

The aged finish reinforces the association with antique tools and mechanisms. Along with the size of the pieces, this contributes to making the experience feel like exploring a small engraved illustration. The appeal of the piece lies in the possibility of returning to the scene: following certain paths, searching for a figure, or imagining the journey from a different perspective.

Between the station and the sky lies a city that each reader can explore in their own way. The two coins provide the vehicles; the rest of the journey is up to the imagination.
