To celebrate the 600th anniversary of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KU Leuven) and the Université Catholique de Louvain (UC Louvain), the Royal Belgian Mint has issued a new collector coin with a face value of 20 euros to pay tribute to these two great academic institutions.
Founded in 1425, KU Leuven is the oldest university in the Netherlands and one of Europe's leading higher education institutions. Based in Leuven, it offers teaching primarily in Dutch and is characterized by its strong focus on research, innovation, and academic excellence. The university consistently ranks among the world's top universities in various international rankings and is a member of the League of European Research Universities (LERU).
UCLouvain, for its part, originated from the same historic institution, but following the linguistic division of the Catholic University of Louvain in 1968, it established itself as an independent French-speaking institution. Its main campus is located in Louvain-la-Neuve, a university city specifically created to house the institution. UCLouvain is one of Europe's leading French-speaking universities and is distinguished by its academic excellence, its focus on multidisciplinary research, and its social innovation.
Both universities maintain high standards of quality in education and research, collaborating with institutions around the world and forming part of prestigious academic networks. Despite their separation, they continue to share a common heritage that places them among the best universities in Belgium and Europe.
The obverse of the coin features the Leuven statue "Sedes sapientiae" in the center, depicting Saint Mary with the Child Jesus on her knees. In the background, the lower circle is filled with scientifically inspired line drawings, while the upper circle features the text: "SEDES SAPIENTIAE ORA PRO NOBIS" (Seat of Knowledge, pray for us). Below, we also see the inscription "UCLOUVAIN 1425 2025 KU LEUVEN." This is replicated again on the upper edge of the composition, indicating the names of the jubilee university institutions and their dates. At the bottom of the design, we see the inscription "600," referring to their anniversary.
The reverse of the coin features an image of King Felipe, facing right. Alongside his image are his monogram and the year of issue "2025." The outer rim features the name of the issuing country in three languages, the mint mark, the face value "20 EURO," the mint master's mark, and the initials "LL," corresponding to the designer Luc Luycx.
