On March 6th, the 550th anniversary of the birth of Michelangelo Buonarroti, a central figure of the Italian Renaissance, was commemorated. To pay tribute to this great Renaissance master, the Italian Mint issued a new coin in his honor, which features different mintages, as we'll see below.
Michelangelo Buonarroti
Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) was one of the most influential figures of the Italian Renaissance, distinguished as a sculptor, painter, architect, and poet. His absolute mastery of human anatomy and his tireless pursuit of perfection made him a leading figure in Western art.
From an early age, he displayed exceptional talent, training in the workshop of Domenico Ghirlandaio and absorbing the influence of Florentine humanism. His first major work, the Pietà (1499), sculpted in marble with unparalleled precision and expressiveness, brought him international acclaim. He later created David (1504), a masterpiece that symbolizes the strength and beauty of the Renaissance ideal.
In the field of painting, his intervention in the Sistine Chapel (1508-1512) marked a milestone in the history of art. The ceiling frescoes, featuring impeccably anatomical figures and innovative dynamism, redefined the visual representation of the divine. Decades later, he returned to the chapel to paint The Last Judgment (1536-1541), a monumental composition that reflects his artistic evolution and a more dramatic vision of spirituality.
As an architect, he was appointed in 1546 to the task of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, where he redesigned the dome, creating one of the most impressive structures in the history of architecture.
His legacy transcends time, and his ability to imbue stone and paint with emotion and movement continues to amaze the world. His work not only defined the Renaissance but also influenced the art and architecture of subsequent centuries, cementing him as one of the most enduring figures in the history of art.
