On April 21, 2025, Turkey issued a new collector coin, inaugurating the "Defense Industry" series , dedicated to the major technological achievements of its military sector. The first coin in this collection pays tribute to the T625 Gökbey helicopter , a symbol of the country's industrial independence in the aeronautical sector.
The obverse of the coin depicts a top-down view of the T625 Gökbey helicopter flying over a map of Turkey, with concentric waves suggesting a radar. The design is completed with the Turkish crescent and star, the inscription "Türkiye Cumhuriyeti / Republic of Türkiye," the face value, the year 2025, and the logo of Turkish Aerospace Industries, the aircraft manufacturer.
The reverse features two Gökbey helicopters: one in the foreground and the other in silhouette, against a starry sky. Below, the inscription "T625 Gökbey" creatively integrates the national symbol into the letter "Ö." An inscription in Turkish emphasizes that this is the first multipurpose helicopter produced in Turkey.
The coin, with a face value of 20 Turkish lira , is minted in 925 sterling silver , weighs 31.10 grams (one troy ounce) and has a diameter of 38.61 mm . It features an antique finish that highlights the design details and a fluted edge . Only 3,000 pieces are issued , mainly intended for collectors. The piece sells for an initial price of 2,250 Turkish lira , which is approximately equivalent to 52 euros at the current exchange rate.
The T625 Gökbey is the first fully Turkish-developed multi-role helicopter, designed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI). This medium-sized, twin-engine helicopter is capable of carrying up to 12 passengers and was conceived for both civil and military missions: troop transport, rescues, medical evacuations, and other special operations. Equipped with modern avionics and advanced flight systems, the Gökbey is capable of operating in extreme weather conditions and challenging terrain. Initially powered by LHTEC CTS800 engines, future versions are planned to feature the Turkish TS1400 engine. The delivery of the first units to the National Gendarmerie in October 2024 marked a milestone for the country's technological independence.
With this coin, Turkey not only celebrates its growing defense industry capabilities but also inaugurates a collection that will showcase major advances in aviation, naval, and defense systems in the coming years. The coin dedicated to Gökbey is thus a highly symbolic first step in consolidating national pride in the technological and military spheres.
