On April 17, 2025, the National Bank of Ukraine issued the commemorative coin "Easter Joy. Pysanka" , dedicated to the art of pysanka - the ancient Ukrainian tradition of decorating Easter eggs. This artistic expression amazes with the delicacy and richness of its ornamental motifs, symbolizing the sun, the emergence of life, and the awakening of nature. The art of pysanka is an essential element of Ukraine's national identity and the preservation of its traditions. In 2024, the pysanka was recognized by UNESCO with its inclusion on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The obverse of the coin features a stylized Tree of Life, a symbol of the universe, represented as an oak tree, an image of strength, protection, longevity, courage, and fidelity. The tree is symbolically divided into three levels or worlds, each containing 12 pysanky, which reflect the 12-year cycle and symbolize different aspects of each world. At the top, representing the celestial world, appear Berehynia (a protective goddess), a stylized flower symbolizing the human soul, the sun as the source of life, a star (ruja) representing development and prosperity, a bee as a symbol of fertility and industriousness, and a bird embodying eternity and the spirit of the ancestors. The trunk of the tree represents the earthly world, with the figure of the deer, a light-bearer and symbol of agriculture, the horse representing strength and movement, and the ram as the embodiment of creative energy. The tree's roots symbolize the underworld and water, where the letter sigma (S) is represented, representing the subterranean dragon that guards the home; an amulet composed of ancient symbols (cross, rhombus, swastika, ram's horns, and dots); a fish as a symbol of fertility and life; and waves that reflect the continuous flow of water and life itself. Around the tree, a frame of triangles represents the trinity of the universe (heaven, earth, and water) and divine harmony through the equilateral triangle. At the top of the obverse, the inscription "UKRAINE" appears, accompanied below by the face value "10," the hryvnia symbol, the small National Emblem of Ukraine, the year of issue "2025," the logo of the Mint of the National Bank of Ukraine, the metal purity "Ag 999," and the pure weight "31.1 g."
The reverse of the coin depicts a traditional pysanka from the Odessa region, known as "Sorokoput" or "Kozachi levady," decorated with elaborate ornaments of profound meaning. The swastika is one of the oldest solar symbols, associated with the desire for happiness, well-being, and protection. The straight and oblique crosses represent the three-dimensional universe, uniting different levels of existence. The ladders symbolize spiritual growth and the search for God, while the sun, always venerated, embodies the life-giving celestial fire. Two swastikas superimposed on a white background, forming an angle, create an effect of continuous movement, reinforced by a central circle representing the cosmos and eternity. The combination of green and black, outlined in yellow, adds tension, energy, and depth to the ornamental design.
The coin was designed by Oleksandra Kuchynska and has an announced mintage of 15,000 . It is minted in Ag 999 silver , weighing 31.1 grams , and is in Special Uncirculated minting quality . It features a sector-striped edge.
