The Vatican's numismatic history experienced a very particular moment with the arrival of Pope Francis in 2013. As is tradition, the Vatican minted euro coins bearing the new pontiff's effigy. However, true to his humble nature and his rejection of the limelight, Francis made a historic decision: he only allowed his image to appear on the coins for three years, specifically in the 2014 , 2015 , and 2016 series . Starting in 2017, of his own volition, the official coins began to bear only his coat of arms, marking a gesture of humility unprecedented in the history of papal numismatics. 

During those three years, the Vatican issued the traditional eight euro coins—ranging from 1 cent to 2 euros—featuring different portraits of Francis, reflecting his spiritual commitment rather than his personal image. These limited and low-circulation issues are now highly prized in the world of numismatics, not only for their scarcity but also for the powerful message they convey: a pope who placed his mission above his image.

In 2025, after his death, interest in these coins increased significantly. On platforms like eBay and other auction houses, complete sets of the Vatican's annual series saw their value increase, albeit moderately. For example, a complete set from 2014, in mint condition, currently fetches between 50 and 80 euros , depending on the condition and presentation. While these coins are highly sought-after, they do not represent a fortune: their true value lies in their symbolism and their place in Vatican history.

The brief appearance of Pope Francis's image on Vatican coins tangibly encapsulates his legacy of humility. Even on one of the oldest symbols of authority—money—Francis shifted the focus from himself to the role and message of the Church. Today, his coins remain small collectibles that remind us that true power lies in simplicity and service, not in the glitter of metal.
