The Bank of Cape Verde launched a new edition of the 1,000 and 2,000 escudo banknotes in April 2025, incorporating state-of-the-art security measures and more durable construction. Although the designs remain faithful to the previous 2014 series, technical improvements aim to make counterfeiting more difficult and extend the lifespan of the banknotes in circulation.

The 1,000-escudo note still features Codé di Dona, an iconic Cape Verdean musician associated with funaná, while the 2,000-escudo note retains the image of Cesária Évora, the internationally renowned "barefoot diva" and ambassador of morna. The selection of these figures reaffirms the role of music in the country's cultural identity.

Among the security innovations are a holographic strip, prints visible only under ultraviolet light, and advanced printing techniques. These new banknotes will coexist alongside the previous ones for a period of time, without altering their legal tender.

Since its independence, Cape Verde has maintained the escudo as its national currency, a legacy of the Portuguese colonial era. The Cape Verde escudo is pegged to the euro with a stable exchange rate of 1 EUR = 110.265 CVE, meaning that 1,000 escudos are worth approximately 9 euros and 2,000 escudos are worth approximately 18 euros. This peg has provided stability to the archipelago's economy.

A curious detail is that, unlike Portugal, which abandoned the escudo to adopt the euro, Cape Verde decided to retain the name of its currency as a symbol of continuity and sovereignty. Furthermore, in 2014, it pioneered the region by introducing polymer banknotes for some denominations, such as the 200 escudo, thus embracing innovation without losing sight of its traditions.

The 2025 update reaffirms Cape Verde's commitment to protecting its currency and celebrating its rich cultural heritage, modernizing its paper currency without altering the faces that represent the soul of its islands.
