April 23, 2025, Portugal is dressing up to commemorate a momentous milestone in its history: the 50th anniversary of its first free elections. To celebrate this pivotal moment that marked the beginning of a new era of democracy and citizen participation, the Portuguese Mint has issued a significant new commemorative coin with the evocative name "50 Years of Free Elections – 1975 – 2025."
The coin, designed by renowned artist Henrique Cayatte , contains a deep historical and symbolic meaning in its details.
Obverse: The center of the coin draws attention with the legends "50 Years of Elections in Freedom" and "1975.2025 ," concisely recalling the reason for the commemoration. On the left edge, we find the creator's name, the face value, a stylized representation of the national coat of arms, and the mint mark.
Reverse: This side of the coin takes us directly to the heart of Portuguese democracy. Following the curvature of the top, left, and bottom edges, a graphic representation of the hemicycle of the Assembly of the Republic unfolds , composed of small circles evoking the 250 parliamentary seats . This ingenious visual arrangement underlines the importance of popular representation in the democratic system. On the right edge, arranged vertically from bottom to top, the words "Portugal" and the emblematic date "25.04.1975" anchor the coin in its historical context.
The drawing of the parliamentary chamber is particularly significant , as it visualizes the space where ideas are debated and decisions are made that shape the nation's future. This direct representation of the seat of popular sovereignty emphasizes the democratic legacy of the 1975 elections , which paved the way for the full exercise of fundamental rights and political participation for all Portuguese citizens.
The issuance of this commemorative coin transcends the numismatic sphere. It becomes a tangible reminder of the courage and determination of the Portuguese people in their pursuit of freedom and democracy. The elections of April 25, 1975, marked a turning point in the country's history, consolidating the values of political pluralism, universal suffrage, and the rule of law.
