The issuance of a commemorative coin reflects the cultural and economic impact expected from such a world-class event. On this occasion, Japan has decided to mark the arrival of World Expo 2025 in Osaka with a special bimetallic 500-yen coin, whose design and technical features have been developed to celebrate an event that will bring together more than 150 countries and is projected to attract some 28 million visitors.
Features of the 500 Yen Coin
Design and Visual Elements
Obverse: The main face of the coin features the event's official mascot, known as Myaku-Myaku . This design not only pays tribute to the spirit of innovation and creativity expected at the Expo, but also incorporates symbolic elements that evoke the vitality and connection between cultures.
Reverse: The reverse features the official logo of Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan . The legendary inscription includes information such as the issue date and the year of the Reiwa era, ensuring a timely connection with the country's new era.
Materials and Technical Specifications
Bimetallic Composition: The coin features a bimetallic structure consisting of a cupronickel core (approximately 75% copper, 12.5% zinc, and 12.5% nickel) surrounded by a brass ring, giving it its distinctive color contrast. This feature is also used to combat counterfeiting, a historical concern for high-denomination coins in Japan.
Dimensions and Weight: The coin weighs 7.1 grams and has a diameter of 26.5 mm. It also features a two-pass helical edging technique, which is part of the additional security measures implemented.
Finishing Technology: Unlike some collector coins that are crafted with techniques to achieve a high-gloss finish, this coin retains the standard properties of circulating coins, maintaining the characteristic texture and finish to facilitate recognition in banknote and coin validation systems.
