Today, April 25, Ukraine celebrates the astonishing resilience of its wildlife with the issuance of a new 5-hryvnia coin from the "Chernobyl Renaissance" series. This piece pays a poignant tribute to the European elk ( Alces alces ), the majestic representative of the deer family in the country, which has emerged as a powerful symbol of the restoration of natural ecosystems within the Chernobyl Ecological and Radial Biosphere Reserve.

This nature reserve, the largest in Ukraine with an impressive area of 226,269.5 hectares, plays a crucial role in preserving the natural processes that occur in an environment marked by radiation. Against all odds, it has become a sanctuary for numerous species of flora and fauna, many of them unique.

The European elk, which found refuge and thrived after the Chernobyl accident and the subsequent human evacuation of the area, has become an emblem of this unexpected revitalization. Its presence and population growth within the 30-kilometer exclusion zone demonstrate nature's tenacity, its ability to heal and flourish even in the most adverse circumstances. This recognition was cemented in 2017, when the European elk was included on the Ukrainian List of Endangered Species, a reminder of the importance of its protection.

The new 5 hryvnia coin captures this story of hope and resilience through a detailed and symbolic design:

Obverse: The small coat of arms of Ukraine is displayed at the top, accompanied by the inscription "УКРАЇНА" (Ukraine). To the right, the face value "5/ГРИВЕНЬ" (5/hryvnias). The center of the obverse features an evocative "wheel of life," a symbol of the rebirth of nature. This wheel incorporates a stylized sign of the international radiation zone, delicately intertwined with leaves and surrounded by representations of animals whose populations have experienced a notable increase in the exclusion zone. Among them are black storks, Przewalski's horses, lynxes, bison, elk, and brown bears, illustrating the biodiversity that has found an unexpected refuge in the reserve. A circular legend on a plain background frames the composition, with the inscription «ЧОРНОБИЛЬСЬКИЙ РАДІАЦІљНО-ЕКОЛОГІЧНИЙ БІОСФЕРНИЙ ЗАПОВІДНИК» (Chernobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve) on the left and its English translation «CHORNOBYL RADIATION AND ECOLOGICAL BIOSPHERE RESERVE» on the right. At the top is the mint mark, and below, the year of issue of the coin: «2025».

Reverse: The reverse of the coin features a beautiful landscape scene with a pad-printed figure of a European moose, adding depth and realism to the image. Above, on a plain background, are the legend in Ukrainian and English "ЛОСЬ / фВРОПЕЙСЬКИЙ" and the scientific name " ALCES ALCES ". At the top of the design, a female moose can be seen accompanied by her calf, symbolizing the continuity of life and hope for the future.
