Next Monday, June 23rd, the Royal Mint will issue a new 10-euro commemorative silver coin to pay tribute to one of the greatest names in Spanish literature: Antonio Machado. It marks the 150th anniversary of his birth, and this special piece aims to be more than just a collector's item: a gesture of remembrance.

Machado, beyond the books

Born in 1875, Antonio Machado was much more than a poet. He was also a playwright, storyteller, and thinker. A key figure of the Generation of '98, his life was marked by a profound sensitivity to the reality of his time. In Madrid, he moved between cafés, stages, and social gatherings, always connected to the cultural world of the time. In 1927, he was elected to the Royal Spanish Academy, although, curiously, he never took up his position.

His work is influenced by several factors. The first is familial: his father, Antonio Machado Álvarez, was passionate about Andalusian folklore. Later came the philosophers—Bergson and Unamuno, especially—and, always present, was the critical gaze toward a Spain that had yet to fully discover itself. Although Rubén Darío's modernism marked his beginnings, that influence never completely disappeared.

Together with his brother Manuel, Antonio also wrote several plays between 1926 and 1932. Titles such as La Lola se va a los puertos (Lola goes to the ports ) and La duquesa de Benamejí (The Duchess of Benamejí) were premiered during the authors' lifetimes and left their mark on the stage, and later, even on film.

A coin with symbols

The new coin doesn't just bear his face: it's full of symbolic details. On the obverse , against a large "150" background, a suitcase with books, a marine scene, and orange blossoms appear. A combination that suggests travel, poetry, and nostalgia. On the left, vertically, you can read "ESPAÑA," and below, in a curve, "1875-2025."

The reverse features a portrait of Machado, based on a photograph by Alfonso Sánchez Portela. Beside it, over a drawn feather, the value is indicated: "10 EURO." Directly below is his signature. To the right is the mint mark. And rounding out the collection is the curved legend: "150th Anniversary of Antonio Machado."

More than a coin

With this piece, the National Mint and Stamp Factory not only celebrates a milestone. It invites us to rediscover Machado, to reread his verses, to reflect on that man who, with simple words, knew how to express profound things. And who, 150 years later, continues to walk alongside us.
