The Swiss Mint has issued a new commemorative coin in honor of CERN (the European Laboratory for Particle Physics), an emblematic institution in the field of scientific research and a symbol of Swiss and global innovation. This special issue seeks to pay tribute to the scientific and technological achievements attained by CERN throughout its nearly seven-decade history.
Founded in 1954 and based in Geneva, on the Franco-Swiss border, CERN is the world's largest particle physics research facility. It currently has 24 member states and a wide-ranging network of international collaborators. Its mission is to explore the fundamental laws of the universe by studying the smallest components of matter: particles. Over the years, CERN has been the site of groundbreaking scientific discoveries, such as the Higgs boson discovery in 2012, which have significantly advanced our understanding of the cosmos.
The commemorative coin features a carefully crafted design highlighting one of CERN's most iconic symbols: the LHC (Large Hadron Collider). This impressive machine, the world's largest and most powerful particle accelerator, consists of a 27-kilometer-circumference ring located about 100 meters underground. The LHC accelerates protons to near-light speeds to trigger controlled collisions, the results of which are analyzed by scientists around the world. The study of these collisions has provided key data for unraveling the mysteries of matter and energy, shedding light on the origins and fundamental workings of the universe.
In addition to the LHC, the coin's design also incorporates symbolic elements that represent the international collaboration and commitment to peace and scientific progress that characterize CERN. This issue is part of Swissmint's tradition of celebrating Swiss scientific and cultural achievements, reinforcing the country's role as one of the world's leaders in advanced research.
The official presentation of the coin will take place at a special ceremony in Geneva, attended by prominent scientists and international representatives. This piece is expected to become a highly prized collector's item, not only for its numismatic value but also for the message of global collaboration and scientific exploration it embodies, although it is unfortunate that the coin's design falls short of what it celebrates.
The obverse of the coin depicts one of these proton collisions, which generate a multitude of particles, some of which were present at the beginning of the Universe, just after the Big Bang. At the bottom of this iconic representation are the inscriptions "UNIVERSE OF PARTICLES" and "CERN."
The reverse of the coin features an image of a Large Hadron Collider magnet. These superconducting magnets are technological marvels, generating extremely powerful magnetic fields to guide and concentrate the particle beams in the ring. Surrounding the central design are the inscriptions "CONFOEDERATIO HELVETICA" (SWELVE CONFEDERATION), the year of issue "2025," the face value "20 FR" (20 Swiss francs), and the mintmark "B" (Bern).
