In 2019, the issuance of a series of 2-euro commemorative coins dedicated to the historical ethnographic regions of Lithuania: Samogitia, Aukštaitija, Dzūkija, and Suvalkija (Sudovia) began. One final coin was missing to complete the collection: the one corresponding to Little Lithuania ( Mažoji Lietuva ), whose issue was initially planned for 2023 but was cancelled for unknown reasons.

Today, thanks to our colleague Paul (Euromunter) , we finally learned the official design of this long-awaited coin, whose issue is confirmed for the fourth quarter of 2025. This will definitively conclude the series dedicated to the country's ethnographic regions.

The mintage will be 500,000 units , of which 495,000 will be in UNC (uncirculated) quality, available in rolls, and 5,000 in BU quality , presented in a coin card intended for collectors.

The design on the national side was created by Rolandas Rimkūnas , inspired by the regional coat of arms by Arvydas Každailis . The center of the coin features an elk holding a spear in its front paws, with a shining beacon above it , a symbol of light and guidance. On either side are kurenkahns , traditional Baltic Sea fishing boats. Below the coat of arms is a quote from the philosopher Vydūnas : “Spindulys esmi begalinės šviesos” (“A ray is the essence of infinite light”).

The composition is completed by the inscriptions “Lietuva” , “Mažoji Lietuva” , the year 2025 and the mint mark of the Lithuanian Mint , all surrounded by the 12 stars of the European Union flag . The edge of the coin, like all those issued by Lithuania in this denomination, features the legends: LAISVĖ * VIENYBĖ * GEROVĖ * (FREEDOM * UNITY * WELL-BEING *).

This coin not only completes a series celebrating Lithuania's regional diversity, but also represents a symbolic recognition of an area with a complex historical past, marked by Germanic influence and the current territorial division with the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad.
