To celebrate the legacy and continued achievements of the Royal Air Force's aerobatic group, The Royal Mint has issued a coin commemorating this British team of skilled aviators.Red Arrows
The Red Arrows are the Royal Air Force (RAF) aerobatic team, known worldwide for their skill and precision in the air. Founded in 1964, the Red Arrows represent the excellence of the RAF and serve as ambassadors for British aviation. Comprised of highly skilled pilots, the team performs a stunning array of aerobatic maneuvers in the air, using bright red BAE Systems Hawk T1 aircraft, which gives them their name and makes them easily recognizable.
Throughout its history, the Red Arrows have performed nearly 5,000 displays in 57 countries, distinguished by their impeccable formations and synchronized flights, often leaving a trail of colored smoke in their wake. These displays not only demonstrate the technical skill of its members, but also the discipline and teamwork that characterize the RAF.
Team members are selected from among the RAF's finest pilots and must pass rigorous tests before becoming part of this renowned squadron. In addition to their displays, the Red Arrows play a crucial role in recruiting new members for the British Armed Forces, as many people who watch their shows as children are inspired to pursue careers in aviation.
Furthermore, behind every successful flight is a team of engineers and support staff, known as "The Blues," who work tirelessly to ensure every detail is perfectly coordinated. Without their contribution, the Red Arrows' spectaculars would not be possible.
The reverse of this 50p note, designed by Tuch Design, features the main image of the three iconic BAE Systems Hawk T1 aircraft belonging to the Red Arrows, leaving behind the traditional trail displayed at the team's air displays. Beneath this image is the inscription of the aerobatic group's name, "RED ARROWS."
On the obverse, the coin features a portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings. Surrounding it are inscriptions that include the monarch's name, as well as the Latin legends "DG REX. FD," which translate as "Dei Gratia Rex" (King by the Grace of God) and "Fidei Defensor" (Defender of the Faith). The coin's face value, "50 PENCE," and the year of issue, "2025," are also printed.
