The Republic of San Marino has added a new piece to its 2026 numismatic program with the issuance of a €5 silver coin dedicated to Giuseppe Verdi. The coin commemorates the 125th anniversary of the death of the celebrated Italian composer and is part of the "Great Composers of Music" series, a collection that in recent years has become one of the most recognizable in San Marino's numismatics.

Far from resorting to the classic portrait of the honoree, San Marino has opted for a much more evocative design. The coin doesn't depict Verdi, but rather one of the most iconic characters born from his work: Aida. In this way, the issue not only commemorates the composer, but also the artistic legacy that made him one of the most important figures in the history of music.

A silver coin inspired by the opera Aida

The choice of Aida is no accident. Premiered in Cairo in 1871, this opera is among Giuseppe Verdi's most famous compositions and continues to be performed regularly in major theaters around the world. Its blend of drama, love, power, and exoticism has made it one of the great masterpieces of opera.

Designer Daniela Longo has brought this world to life on the coin with a depiction of the Ethiopian princess Aida. The protagonist appears elegantly adorned with jewelry and decorative elements inspired by ancient Egypt. Behind her, the famous pyramids can be seen, an immediate reference to the setting of the story.

The lower part of the design incorporates a musical staff that recalls the true reason for the issue: the tribute to Giuseppe Verdi and the extraordinary influence that his music continues to exert more than a century after his death.

The result is a composition that is especially attractive to collectors, as it manages to unite music, history and art in a single piece without resorting to repetitive formulas.

The obverse maintains the identity of San Marino coins

The obverse of the coin features the official coat of arms of the Republic of San Marino, accompanied by the name of the issuing country and the face value. This is a common solution for many San Marino collector coins and allows the main artistic focus to remain on the reverse design.

The series dedicated to great composers continues to grow

This 5 euro coin from San Marino dedicated to Giuseppe Verdi is the third installment in the "Great Composers of Music" series. The collection began with an issue inspired by Giacomo Puccini and continued with one dedicated to Georges Bizet.

The selection of Verdi was one of the most anticipated within a series focused on fundamental figures of classical music. Composer of such celebrated works as Aida, La Traviata, Rigoletto, Nabucco, and Il Trovatore, his influence transcends the realm of opera and forms part of the European cultural heritage.

One of the most interesting silver coins from San Marino in 2026

With a limited mintage of only 2,500 copies, this silver Proof coin dedicated to Giuseppe Verdi is among San Marino's most exclusive issues for 2026. Its appeal lies not only in its scarcity, but also in an artistic approach that differs from the usual.

While many commemorative coins feature a portrait of the honoree, this issue chooses to depict one of his most universal creations. Thanks to this, the coin successfully conveys some of the atmosphere of Aida and transforms Verdi's music into an image engraved on silver—an approach that will surely be appreciated by both collectors of themed coins and classical music enthusiasts.
