On June 15, 2026, Greece will put into circulation one of the most elegant commemorative €2 coins of the year. The coin is dedicated to the centenary of the founding of the Academy of Athens, the country's most prestigious scientific and cultural institution, considered the modern heir to the intellectual spirit of ancient Greece.
The issue commemorates the one hundred years since the official creation of the Academy in 1926, an event that allowed contemporary Greece to recover an institution inspired by the historic academy founded by Plato more than two thousand years earlier.
A coin dedicated to the modern temple of Greek knowledge
The coin's design features a detailed representation of the iconic Academy of Athens building, one of Europe's most famous neoclassical structures.
At the heart of the national scene is the building's main façade with its distinctive Ionic columns, decorated pediment, and the Greek flag flying at the top. The composition is completed by the monumental sculptures located on either side of the building, inseparable elements of the image that identifies the Academy today.
Surrounding the scene is the Greek inscription "100 ΧΡΟΝΙΑ ΑΠΟ ΤΗΝ ΙΔΡΥΣΗ ΤΗΣ ΑΚΑΔΗΜΙΑΣ ΑΘΗΝΩΝ", which can be translated as "100 years since the founding of the Academy of Athens".
At the bottom appears «ЕЛЛЗНЙКЗ ДЗМПКСБФЙБ» («Hellenic Republic»), while the year of issue, 2026, is located in the upper part of the design.
This is a coin that focuses on architecture and institutional symbolism, moving away from the usual historical portraits to pay homage to one of the country's great centers of research and thought.
The Academy of Athens, symbol of modern Greece
Although its intellectual roots go back to the famous school founded by Plato in the 4th century BC, the current Academy of Athens was officially established in 1926 as the highest scientific institution of the Greek State.
Since then, it has played a vital role in promoting science, the humanities, the arts, and research. Its members have included some of Greece's most prominent scientists, historians, archaeologists, and thinkers.
Its headquarters is also one of the most admired buildings in Athens. Designed by the Danish architect Theophil Hansen, it forms, together with the National Library and the University of Athens, the well-known "Neoclassical Trilogy," one of the most representative architectural ensembles in the Greek capital.
The choice of this building for the coin is particularly fitting because it visually summarizes the connection between classical Greece and contemporary Greece, an idea that has been present in numerous numismatic issues of the country.
Three presentations for collectors
As is customary with recent Greek issues, the coin will be available in three different formats.
Most of the print run will be distributed through regular rolls, allowing hundreds of thousands of copies to reach the public.
In addition, the Bank of Greece will offer a coincard version for collectors and a special proof edition, minted with top-quality finishes and presented in a case.

One of the most attractive Greek coins of 2026
Greece typically uses its commemorative coins to highlight historical events, national figures, or fundamental elements of its cultural identity. This time, the choice of the Academy of Athens brings together architecture, history, education, and national heritage in a single image.
Furthermore, the design boasts a wealth of detail and a strong visual component, something that is often highly valued among collectors of 2 euro coins.
