The Central Reserve Bank of Peru continues to expand its successful "Peruvian Pre-Columbian Ceramics" series with the release of a new 1 sol coin dedicated to the Recuay culture. Issued on June 18, 2026, this is the fifth installment in a collection that aims to introduce the general public to some of the most outstanding artistic expressions of ancient Peru.

The series, comprised of eleven coins, aims to promote Peruvian cultural heritage through an everyday means of payment. With a mintage of ten million coins, the new coin will circulate alongside the other 1 sol coins currently in use, allowing millions of people to connect with the history and art of pre-Columbian cultures.

The Recuay culture

The Recuay culture developed in the present-day region of Ancash, in the northern highlands of Peru, between the 2nd and 7th centuries AD. It is especially known for its complex artistic expressions, among which its stone sculptures and ceramics of great technical and symbolic quality stand out.

Their ceramic pieces often depict high-ranking figures, warriors, animals, and mythological beings related to their religious beliefs. These creations constitute a valuable source of information for understanding the social organization and worldview of one of the most important cultures of the central Andes.

A noblewoman depicted in ceramics

The design chosen for this new coin depicts a ceramic figure of a woman belonging to the indigenous nobility. The figure is adorned with rich clothing and numerous decorative elements that reflect her high status within Recuay society.

The image occupies the center of the coin's reverse and is one of the most outstanding examples of pottery produced by this culture. Surrounding it are various design elements that identify the series, including the inscription "CULTURA RECUAY," the legend "CERÁMICA PRECOLOMBINA," the mint mark of the National Mint, and a set of vertical geometric lines that add depth to the design.

The obverse maintains the usual design of Peruvian 1 sol coins. In the center appears the Coat of Arms of Peru surrounded by the inscription "BANCO CENTRAL DE RESERVA DEL PERÚ" (Central Reserve Bank of Peru). At the bottom is the year of minting, 2026, while an inscribed octagon forms the coin's characteristic frame.
