Next Monday, June 29, one of the most interesting joint issues of the 2026 Spanish numismatic program will go on sale: The Real de a Ocho: Roots of Canadian Coinage, a collection made up of two one-ounce silver coins issued jointly by the National Mint and the Royal Canadian Mint.

This is not just another collection. This issue looks directly to one of the most influential coins in history: the Spanish eight-real, also known internationally as the Spanish dollar. A coin that for centuries circulated across oceans, ports, trade routes, and territories far removed from one another, becoming a truly global currency.

The collection is presented as a two-piece Proof case: a Spanish 10-euro coin and a Canadian 20-dollar coin, both minted in silver and one ounce in weight. The retail price will be 290 euros, including VAT, and the maximum mintage is limited to 2,500 sets.

The appeal of this issue lies precisely in the dialogue between the two coins. Spain contributes the historical roots: the Spanish eight-real, the great international currency of the Early Modern period. Canada brings the memory of a territory where those Spanish coins played a significant role in monetary circulation during the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Spanish coin reproduces on its reverse an image inspired by the reverse of a real de a ocho coin minted in Mexico in 1737, during the reign of Philip V. It features the most recognizable elements of the columnario: the Pillars of Hercules, the globes, the crowns and the legend PLUS ULTRA , one of the most powerful designs in all of Hispanic numismatics.

The obverse features a portrait of King Felipe VI facing left, accompanied by the legend FELIPE VI REY DE ESPAÑA · 2026, the mint mark, and the face value of 10 EURO. The design maintains a clean and understated aesthetic, with the royal portrait as the central element and a proof finish that enhances the contrast between the mirrored background and the matte relief.

The Canadian coin, with a face value of 20 dollars, features on its obverse the portrait of Charles III alongside the legend CANADA 2026 DG REX. Its reverse visually links to Spain's Spanish heritage through a reinterpretation of historical motifs associated with the Spanish dollar and the escudo, highlighting the role those coins played in Canadian monetary development.

The FNMT itself highlights that this is the first collaboration in history between the Royal Canadian Mint and the Royal Mint of Spain, a detail that adds institutional and collector interest to the issue. Furthermore, it is presented as the first round one-ounce silver coin issued by the FNMT-RCM, another noteworthy element within the Spanish collector coin program.

The Spanish dollar was not just a Spanish coin. It was a tool of international trade, a trusted benchmark, and a currency accepted in very different territories thanks to its weight, purity, and recognition. Its influence also reached North America, where it contributed to the formation of monetary systems that would later evolve into their own national currencies.

Therefore, this collection has a meaning that goes beyond the precious metal or the mintage. It is an issue that connects history, trade, navigation, empires, colonies, and monetary evolution. A way of remembering that, before the major contemporary currencies existed, a Spanish coin had already traveled the world.
