The United States Mint has launched one of the most high-profile commemorative programs of 2026: an official series dedicated to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the major sporting event to be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. This is not simply a themed issue, but a collection designed to unite two worlds with enormous appeal: soccer, now a global phenomenon, and American commemorative numismatics.

The issue consists of three distinct coins: a five-dollar gold coin, a silver dollar, and a half-dollar in cupronickel. Each features a unique obverse design, while the reverse shares a common image that serves as a unifying theme for the entire collection: three hands raising the FIFA World Cup trophy against a background inspired by the stars and stripes of the American flag.

The series arrives at a particularly symbolic moment. The 2026 World Cup will be the first hosted by three countries and also the first with 48 participating teams, making it the largest edition ever held. For the United States, it also represents an opportunity to definitively solidify soccer in a country where the sport has grown spectacularly in recent decades.

Three coins, three ways to count the World Cup

The highest denomination coin is the $5 gold coin, minted at the West Point Mint. Its design is probably the most conceptual of the entire series: the globe is transformed into a soccer ball, with North America as the visual center and the three host countries as the main characters. The inscription “FOOTBALL UNITES THE WORLD” summarizes the central idea of the issue: soccer as a common language, capable of bringing together cultures, flags, and fans from every continent.

The silver dollar features a more dynamic image. Its obverse depicts a footballer in action, controlling the ball, with the FIFA Unity logo in the background. It's a composition that seeks to convey movement, technique, and energy—three elements associated with the spectacle of football and the international scope of the tournament.

The half dollar, meanwhile, features the most visually spectacular scene: a player executing a bicycle kick over the stacked "26" of the official World Cup emblem. It's the most straightforward coin and possibly the most recognizable to the general public because it uses an iconic football action, one of those plays that instantly encapsulates the beauty and difficulty of the sport.

A common reverse side with strong symbolic meaning

All three coins share the same reverse side. It depicts three hands holding aloft the FIFA World Cup trophy, set against a stylized background of stars and stripes. The image clearly connects the competition to the issuing country, while still maintaining the tournament's universal appeal. The hands do not belong to a single player or nation; they represent collective celebration, the unity of countries, and the shared aspiration to win the ultimate prize in world football.

The legends change according to the denomination of each piece: “FIVE DOLLARS”, “ONE DOLLAR” or “HALF DOLLAR”, accompanied by “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM”.

Qualities and presentations

The US Mint is offering all three coins in Proof and uncirculated condition, along with a Proof case containing all three pieces. This format allows the issue to appeal to a wide range of collectors: from those seeking a single coin at a more affordable price to those who prefer the complete collection in a special presentation.

Maximum authorized print runs

The maximum combined mintage is 100,000 coins for the gold piece, 500,000 for the silver dollar, and 750,000 for the half dollar. These figures include all available versions of each coin, that is, adding the Proof, uncirculated, and any sets in which they may appear.

The Proof case of three coins has a product limit of 10,000 units, which will predictably make it one of the most sought-after presentations by collectors who want to keep the complete series in a single issue.

A charity-surcharge issue

As is common with many commemorative programs in the United States, these coins include a surcharge earmarked for specific purposes. In this case, the authorized surcharges are $35 per gold coin, $10 per silver dollar, and $5 per half dollar. According to official information, these funds are destined for FWC2026 US, Inc., to support soccer programs and activities in the United States.

The currency and the moment

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be much more than a tournament. It will be a global test for soccer in North America and one of the biggest sporting events ever held. American numismatics wanted to commemorate this moment with a series that combines sports design, national symbolism, and international appeal.

For Spanish collectors, this issue holds added interest: it not only commemorates the World Cup that will define the 2026 sporting calendar, but also demonstrates how the United States uses its commemorative coin to participate in the narrative of a global event. Gold, silver, and cupronickel all serve a single idea: football as a spectacle, as an industry, and as a symbol of unity between nations.
